1983 Jeep 258 valve cover gasket swap 11

After drilling and taping a couple of extra valve cover bolts, I finally get the new valve cover bolted down.

FYI...NAPA sells a valve cover gasket that uses a steel shim between two gaskets....I forget what they call it but it stopped the leak on my plastic cover....it's a very rigid gasket that holds its shape well....it worked when other gaskets failed.

@towrecker No. The chrome one has a notched side on both sides. Mine has a straight side on one side and notched on the other..

On the front you could take the heater hose off and the rad hose off and get a socket on it. On the back you may be able to get a wobble joint on it with some extensions but Im not there to see it up close so i really dont know.

yep i asked the question about the stripped out bolts, that be me, i am always worried about breaking off bolts or having to drill and tap new holes. my dad had a car-wash, actually several car-washes, with all the water involved , bolts were rusted and stuck more often than not. we went thru plenty of easy outs working on stuff. easy outs LOL not hardly!@%$#@ i always enjoy seeing the follow through on a work in progress buzz

rpeek they make extended fastners that reach up to the top of valve covers for a lot of applications so maybe you can find some that will work on you cheep and then you will be able to reach them and get them tightened to the right torque. Just sayin, dang and dang some more

@1963impala2dr Well, in all actuality, there's plenty of room in there, it's just filled up with useless hoses and such. All that will go. I'm going to clean out the engine compartment so that when I get through with it you should be able to look in there and see what you see. 'course it'll never have as much room as that old truck of yours..

Hello sir! I’m having an issue that i can’t seem to solve. I’m working on a 75 258, and the bolt near the firewall appears to be smaller than the rest. The bolts that fit the other holes is 1/4, but the back hole doesn’t seem to want to go. Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for posting!

@rpeek In my (too far away) youth, I was involved with looking after 'third echelon' Land Rovers, clapped out, tired old girls they were, from the 1960s. They never had all that plumbing, and we could get them to run, and work, and they did a lot of hard pulling, all day. I looked under the bonnet (Google translation to American: hood) of a brand new one, all pipes and boxes, no idea where to start if it goes wrong. Progress?

@harryfaber Yea it's true. One of the reasons for owning an old antique vehicle is to keep it simple so you can see what you got and fix it if it breaks. Can't do that if the hood is clogged with hoses and lines that lead to eternity and back.. hahaha. It's a motor with a carb. I know I can make it work without all that crap. haha

Mine's an 83. I got the valve cover on ebay. Can't tell you a lot more about it than that 'cause I don't remember, but it cured the leak. Still don't leak a drop. One of the best things I did for the Jeep.
