1983 Honda Magna Rebuild - Part 1 Starting Teardown

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In todays video we begin tearing down the magna for a fork rebuild ,some other quick maintenance items, and long needed fixes. The right fork seal has been weeping off and on since I bought it and last year it started to become more of a nuisance. So we are swapping out both the left and right side fork seals for brand new. New oil again, but that will hopefully flush out the last of the old oil since the spring upgrades.
We end up swapping the LED headlight for a new more classic looking model. And I go over some of the unique features of the Magna. This is a quick re-introduction and teardown for the channel that I know has been long anticipated. Thanks for being here!
The Honda Magna was the first muscle bike that started a craze that has lasted for 40 years. Sporting a 90 degree V4 engine, Hydraulic Clutch, and shaft drive the Honda Magna was a direct attack on Harley Davidson. A cult following to this day the Honda Magna is a true classic that deserves more attention from the motorcycle world.

Cool. I pulled my carbs and working on those. New oil pan gasket and some detail work.

How hard were the carbs to get out? Mine were fairly easy, but I hear some folk really fight with them. I love working on these bikes.

@@magnamole I took my time. Did not need to remove the radiator. I just took out the three bolts and moved it an inch or so. What I found is that the bowls were having problems. Carb one bowl wasn't even hooked to the needle. Other covers were leaking and carb four bowl height was messed up. Everything else looked clean. Got my new kits in and just working on the bowls. Then reinstall.

Also, after the tariff, they went to the V42 i think is the technical moniker for my Magna 700. Which did not have a secondary fuel tank. Just a walk light. I have since bobbed the back fender off, and some other stuff. It's still a v4 with tiny little pistons that rev to the moon. And it does get a little flighty at 135. Allegedly.

Yes, v42 and didn't lose any power, just de-stroked it a smidge. The top of 5th gear is enough for most people I hear. 6th is just for the gas mileage on the highway 🤣

It's so great to see the Magna back on the channel again - looking forward to the upgrades and maintenance you have planned for the Magna! Definitely looking forward to getting my Magna on the road this summer finally!

It is good to work on it again, and to be riding it soon. The V strom makes the Magna feel so small working on them back to back.

You forgot the best part of the bike, it's shaft drive. I'm getting a sidecar put on mine as I'm getting too old to have to have the worry about it falling over as I don't bounce as well as I used to and also having to try and pick it up again. I got some YSS rear shocks and new springs in the front forks added to mine about 16 months ago and afterwards it was like a new bike.

It is so maintenance free I forget it exists lol. Would love to see one with a sidecar. I did new rears and front fork springs and that was a tremendous difference, same as you. Cheers!

I have a 1982 magna v45..and it doesn't fire on the 2 rear cylinders. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would first check plug wires and coils under the tank. Then it could also be the spark ignition boxes in the tail section under the seat. They are interchangeable and one runs front and one rear. You can swap the plugs and see if the problem switches, and that would tell you if it is those boxes.

Hello, I just recently got a 84 Magna on a trade and the previous owner had drag bars on it, which was an aggressive forward lean while riding. I have switched out to bars similar to what you installed and noticed the OEM master cylinders have a lean to them showing incorrect levels. Where the aftermarket master cylinders you installed better than the OEM ones? While I run into issues if I stay running the cylinders at a tilt. Thanks for any advice, enjoy your videos!

The tilt may introduce air into the lines which is no good. Some guys run them that way with no issue but I wanted to be safe and got ones that sit flat. That is the only real advantage to the aftermarket ones. I had to relocate the choke, and a couple other little odds and ends. Some guys buy the masters from the Sabres of the same vintage as they sat flat from Honda.

Hello there again! Hope you are enjoying your journeys, so I went ahead and got the new master cylinders that you got as well. My issue now is that the adjustable levers I have now no longer fit. Have you had any luck finding adjustable levers? I have tiny hands lol

mine would run well when i kept my foot on the shifter when i lifted off it the the bike would miss and the lights would go dimm turns out there is no ground wire from the engine to the frame it needs clean and tight motor mounts or every thing on the bike goes crazy the shifter bolts to the engine and the frame when you touch it and take out the slack in the bell crank the bike got a temperary ground fix you guessed it run a ground wire to the frame from the engine the timing chain tensioners are also a bad problem

That is a pretty good story, had not heard of that one yet. Chain tensioners could ultimately kill these bikes, same with the ignition boxes. Run them while you can!

I recently bought an 82 Magna V45, looks just like yours. It's not in terrible shape but I need to get into and see what it needs exactly to get running. But I love those handlebars! Details?

Link should be in the description. Inexpensive drag style bar if I remember right. Will need different master cylinders with the flat bars. Old Sabre masters work or there are some ebay options.
