    I started working with Citroën when the BX was on its last legs, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to do a lot of business trips on them. The company of course would use the 19TZD, so you only got 64 bhp to play with... but it would keep speeding tickets down. The ride was indeed the very best I have experienced, and with very characteristic body movements. Doing 600+ miles in a day with several hours’ meetings in between was absolutely effortless... well, perhaps except for wishing for twice the horsepower on the way home. One trip I even got a 16V petrol, which was absolutely hilarious chasing BMW 3 series down the German Autobahn. The car’s looks didn’t prepare the rest of the traffic for the experience of being left for dead in the slow lane at 100 mph in hilly bends. And the GTI seats were wonderful, especially for blasting through Autobahn bends.

    A small tip for improving the screen wash as the small holes in the pipe on the wiper arm tend to block easily: Use the wiper arm screen wash nozzle of the Mercedes MB 100 van of the 80s and 90s it costs only little at a mercedes van dealer and with some flexible wiper wash hose you can clamp it on the wiper arm instead of the plastic pipe on it... (tech tip from German Citroen car owners club)

    The fabulous verbalised thoughts of the cheerful but slightly resigned lover of cars from a strange gap in time. We had two BX and an XM and life will never be as good again. And nobody understands. But they are wrong. And the rant (the reasoned thought) on low-profile tyres and mesh and stiff springs is spot on. A part of the reason for the ability to cover ground swiftly (the Typhon analogy) is that Citroen had always (ALWAYS) understood how cars were used.... Not for 0-60 times or top speed or anything.... But for swift transit along the highway at legal speeds. Someone clever once described the DS21 as the fastest car in the world to drive at 80%. He (or she) was right. So many seemingly slow Citroens were madly rapid point-to-point: AX, GS, BX, CX, even C15 and the old flat twins.... Wonderful video. Wonderful car. But I'm glad I no longer have one.... Thank you.

    I had two BX’s, a brand new ‘88 1.9 DTR Turbo as a company car which was just fabulous! It was quick, so comfortable and was incredibly economical for the 90k miles I put on it in 3 years and never broke down. In the mid-90’s I decided to buy another one, this time a 1.4 petrol. This car was an absolute dog and disaster, so many things went wrong, two clutch box levers and a heater fan alongside countless other electronic niggles. But in 2023 I’d love to have another on my drive, a diesel for sure. My dream would be a warehouse full of classic Citroen’s and Merc’s.

  • @blxtothis

    I loved my old MK1 BX 1.9 TRD Estate which I ran for a year and a bit in the 90s, I had to carry as many bottles of LM as I could buy as it was always leaking and my mechanic (I am not competent enough to turn a spanner!) never solved the problem. The diesel was fine when moving but at standstill on idle one could feel their fillings working loose. I got what I’d paid my mate for it when I sold it and warned the buyer about the Octopus leak, he remedied it in days. The ride, steering and brakes of these wonderful character full cars beats most others into a cocked hat, if not as complete an experience of the wonderful CX I ran in the 80s, I still fondly remember driving the old thing.

    Citroen BX. 'Magic Carpet Ride' - by Steppenwolf ( Film : Easy Rider ). I owned a 3 year old BX19GT in 1988. And an '88 19RD in 2000.. Cars may have become more powerful, but road speeds, and general driving haven't really changed. My recollection of the BX's, particularly the GT, is that you wouldn't chuck them around in the same way as something modern, but once you 'connected' with the car, you'd make fast progress easily.

  • @UPnDOWN

    @UPnDOWN

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sounds about right. Throw it around sharply like a modern and you'd just fall over, but if you change to suit the car's style, you can go very quickly A-B in them. Because they're so composed, you end up feeling more confident yet relaxed at the same time.

  • @jfv65

    @jfv65

    2 жыл бұрын

    Similar sized modern cars are probably 200-350kg heavier these days. A Golf 1 weighed about 900kg, a Golf 8 weighs 1200kg? Same for Ford escort/focus and Vauxhall Astra. Etc. It's because off all additional electric functions that need motors, like power locks, mirrors, seats, windows and stuf like airbags + control module, ABS + control module, nav system, wheels and tires are wider. Brakes are bigger. Sound deadening is more substantial. It all adds up. That's why 90hp in a BX probably feels just as fast as a modern 120hp car. Not as safe though. That's a fact. You are substantialy more vulnerable in a early 1980's car then in a 2021 car of the same size.

It was a 1986 d reg, with the rolling drum speedo. He px'd it for a 1989 19 rd which in turn I got as he bought a Zantia. Wish i still had the bx after visiting the unexceptional car show last week. Regarding the 'strange' light switch; It's actually because of the old french regulations from the time when you were supposed to use sidelights in lit urban environment and use dipped beam for flashing (or if it was the other way around..) when you needed to warn other cars in crossings and such. You were not allowed to use high beam. All french cars had the 'Village' config - toggle between sidelights and dipped beam, as described above - and 'Route' for open roads where you toggled between high and dipped beam. Makes perfect sense ;D

  • @UPnDOWN

    @UPnDOWN

    2 жыл бұрын

    Personally, I think economy is a bit of a grey area. The TD would likely be better if you use motorways a lot as it's longer-geared, and it needs less pedal to keep it up to speed, whereas around town the n/a diesel 1.9 is better in my experience. Real world all BX diesels are about 40-45mpg. Some people hyper-mile them and reckon they touch on the 50-60mpg region, and while I'm sure some have done, I'm also sure many have not! The 1.9TD in a Xantia, for example, is much thirstier.

  • @Jakko568

    Buddy of mine has the 1.9 RD diesel and his MPG calculations thus far have been between 40-46 in-town and nearly 57 on a longer trip recently if that helps and although it's done a couple longer trips, it's predominantly used in town so it's doing pretty good! Hope that helps.

    @@UPnDOWN that's very funny. Bought my cx estate in Balham (Gateway to the South. Peter Sellers) drove home to Potters Bar Felt like royalty whilst driving through the west end. Opened up on the A1 it was the ride which was amazing. Felt like I was a pilot. 1980s were like that. Your channel is so refreshing.

    Thirty-eight minutes of footage and heaps of detailed facts about pretty much all the interesting aspects of the BX, but unfortunately virtually no relevant explanation of how the suspension performs, I'd call that a bit of a missed opportunity :)

    Started to watch thinking: I've only got time for a bit. Ended up watching till the end. Love your style and sense of humour! The love hate relationship with modern cars is very recognizable. Yes, they do a lot of things better and with less dus than old cars when they were new. But why do they have to do it in such a boring way, full of hideous design choices?

    @@UPnDOWN It’s a great little car, with the emphasis on little. It steers and handles like a go kart (low centre of gravity and an almost short and square footprint) but calling it underpowered is an understatement - every CR-Z on the road desperately needs the optional factory supercharger.

    Rant away about modern cars and their appalling all-round visibility. It drives me mad. Combined with the coal hole interior colour schemes, it makes them so gloomy. Love the car and the video drive.

    I hate the ride on modern cars. I'm a migraine sufferer, too, and harsh bumpy cars set them off. Even my S211 estate with "comfort" suspension doesn't hold a candle to the Mk1 C5 Estate it replaced. Maybe I should buy a CX...
