I heard that on that night is when my mum was just about to bring another new life on earth 'All the roads were closed but, my mum AND dad were stranded facing their own death plus that of the unborn. miraculously a lady from nowhere accompanied them and she begged the officers manning the major roads in Nairobi to allow them pass to the hospital. imagine they were allowed and they traveled from maringo to pumwani and she gave birth thru C-s. thank you mum and dad and the unknown lady from nowhere.

August 1st 1982, Nairobi, Kenya. Attempted coup by elements of the Kenya Air Force resulted in the studios of VOK being occupied and these are some of the announcements broadcast live by the rebel forces. the main speaker is Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka, one of the instigators, who subsequently fled to Tanzania in a military plane, was repatriated, and executed on May 17, 1987. Finally, a short comment by University of Nairobi student chairman Titus Andungosi. He died in prison in 1988. This recording was made on cassette radio at Starehe Boy's Centre in Nairobi on Sunday August 1st, 1982. The tape was neglected for many years. It was digitized and published in 2011 as a historical record.

To all those commenting they cannot hear Leonard Mambo Mbotela's voice and that the clip is fake. No,I witnessed it happen and listened to the very same announcements you are listening to now. That was not Leonard Mambo,it was Hezekiah Ochuka Rabala the leader of the coup plotters who was later repatriated from Tanzania, charged in court and later hanged. Terror was the word in Nairobi at the time. The shops ran out of all dry foods, you could not get even a packet of biscuits. I was living in Eastleigh section two at the time and I recall some neighbourhood youth ganging up to go loot shoes at the Tender Touch Shoe shop which used to be at the end of Tom Mboya street. They ran all the way to town and were busy looting when one of the youth's head burst like a water melon, taken out by a marksman. The rest did not know how they made it back to Eastleigh, shaken, incoherent and trembling. Kenyans,I witnessed the whole thing as a 22 year old and this is something we should avoid at all costs whatever the circumstances. Let's have and solve our differences in courts of law.

A question please,, wasn't Leonard Mbotela kidnapped at gunpoint from his home and taken to the studio in the wee hours of dawn? Then, didn't Ochuka himself eject the shaken reporters from the studio and go on to make the coup announcement himself?

Only just came across this - we were there and almost missed the event. We heard shots in the morning but thought it was rifle practice. After fixing up my car I headed off with my four year old son to look for milk and onions(!!). We went first to Karen (shut - well, it was a Sunday!), nearly drove to Langata (!) but I changed my mind and drove to Adams Arcade, then Hurlingham (!) in search of something being open. On the way back from Hurlingham a couple of drivers flashed lights at me and I recall thinking 'This is a bit like the day after the coup in Uganda - quiet streets, shops shut. Anyway I found milk and onions at a kiosk and didn't find out about the coup till a colleague rang me a couple of hours later... I worked for the Flying Doctors Services at the time and when she said people were 'shooting everywhere' I offered to come down too the airport and help with emergency flights - that's when she mentioned she was hiding under the bed!

I went for a drive with my mum on the second day . I was 14 big and fit and the army check point stopped us . gun pointed in my face while I pulled out my school id . they thought I might be airforce on the run . very scary uncertain time looting and shooting were the norm . Afterwards when it all died down if you did not have receipts for any new stereo , tv or white goods they could be taken off you . this was way before mobile phones of course and also we only had tv from 530 pm to midnight . the only way you knew what was going on was from the radio broadcasts and this is why the radio station was such a strategic item to own . people only knew what to do and where to go by listening to vok radio.

We went downtown on the second day (I had a tour group coming that I wanted to cancel) and it was a terrible mess; blood, broken glass, etc. although bodies had all been removed.. Kenyatta shut down.. no flights.. thank goodness the Post Office was open and I was able to wire a telegram.. on the way back to the Boulevard, a bunch of shots rang out in Jeevanjee Gardens.. we hit the deck but did not see anything...

notice the martial music. At this very moment, I was in the Boulevard Hotel, below the museum. very scary 3 days.. I recorded sounds of shooting from River Road (I think), up near the French Embassy, and from what sounded like the around the Globe roundabout. when the Army came down Museum Hill, we saw them excute a guy I assume was an Air Force guy on the bridge near the roundabout. an airforce guy was shot in the Boulevard parking area, and his body was there for at least 24 hours.. never forget this.

On the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, there were no trucks, no tourists buses...and we all thought, wow seems quiet. Got to Kibwezi, the friends we were visiting were all shocked that we made it and wondered why we even bothered coming. Anyways, drove back to Machakos without any problems.

I was 8 years old when this happened. Now a grown up, first it sounds like those other African countries struggling with unstable leadership. But secondly the reasons highlighted for the coup sound genuine...leaves wondering whether Kenya missed an opportunity. But again, forceful take overs are not known to yield long lasting progressive and democratic societies. Probably it just had to happen as it did, and allow us...the children back then, to grow up and live through the pains of corruption and bad leadership and through reason, dialogue, civility, and unity fight our common enemy. I pray we shall overcome and free us from our very selves.

You are incorrect. This is a genuine recording made by me on a cassette recorder at Starehe Boy's Centre, on the day. We were listening to the radio, and when I started hearing gunshots in the street outside, I started recording. I will post more soon, with other announcements, for historical record. ( the uploader here is free to use my excerpts, because I gave it a Creative Commons license, as I believe it should be heard by young Kenyans today. But if you check my channel, you will see I uploaded it before hotkenyangoods).
