1982 Mercury 40HP Outboard Part 5 - Thermostat, Poppet Valve, and Back Together

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Finally getting the 1982 40hp Mercury outboard back together and the moment of truth to see if it runs. TLDR of this one, it's old, it's smokey, but it works. Would I chose to work on one of these again? Not for fun, but it does show that it's possible to get apart and back together. I'm happy to finish out this series, and if you enjoyed this video, feel free to subscribe to the channel, as it helps me keep motivated through these difficult projects! Thanks for watching!

    Super glad to have found this video series! Bought a 84 35hp at the beginning of summer that's is in beautiful shape and has been well maintained (120 psi of compression). Noticed a little momentary miss in power this week at 3/4 throttle, gas residue everywhere inside. Needs reed valves, your videos on this block are by far the best to help Me Get through it without doing it blind!

    So glad I accidentally found these videos. I just got a 1980 merc 40 on an old bass boat for free. It's been sitting in a back yard for atleast 6 or 7 years uncovered. I'm looking forward to getting it running and replacing all the wood deck, carpet, seats and guages etc. Itll be a project. Thanks for the videos!

    This is really helpful since I can't find much information for my motor. I have a carb running too rich issue and I bought the rebuild kit. I'm just curious if there are any setting on the carb the carb you need to start and are there adjustments you need to make. Like tuning

    What gear were you in when you pulled the lower off? I’m having trouble trying to figure out the correct position of the shift cam on the lower unit. They definitely should have keyed it or lock pin. Mine fell out well taking the lower off. Any info would be great help . Ty

    The shift linkage on the motor side wasn't really connected to anything on this motor, but for lining it up, I had the lower unit in neutral, and then just centered the shift linkage. The one thing you need to keep an eye on is the ramped collar that goes around the shift linkage and pushes up the reverse lock hooks (locks the motor to the bracket when the motor is put in to reverse). Hope this helps, but I feel you, it can definitely be frustrating.

    Hello a AWG so I have mercury outboard I think it’s an 87 35hp very similar to yours. I tore completely down and did work on it now I’ve put it all back together except I have this one red wire with a fuse and I’m not 100% sure where it goes, I think it goes here where the positive wire connects if you have the same on your motor, can you verify thank you I was hoping that I could send a picture but I can’t. The wire is red with an in-line fuse and it looks to be maybe 12 or 14 gauge wire.

    I have the same motor, and with the new spark plugs and new batteries, fully charged, it cranks slow, take the spark plugs out, it cranks normal again. Anything I should be looking at?

  • @TheAfterWorkGarage

    @TheAfterWorkGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    I guess the question is how slow is slow. It's normal for a motor with good compression to crank faster with the plugs out. If it's really abnormally slow, check the intake and exhaust paths, since blockage somewhere in either can also cause this.

    I'm really not sure, I would think it definitely has a thermostat, though the housing may be in a slightly different location. What year is it?

    @@TheAfterWorkGarage 1987. Exact same location and almost identical engine. I ask because I'm tracking down all the water passages because I changed my impeller after i bought it and it didn't pee. And now I got a good stream but water is now flowing from between the powerhead and middle leg. Leaking and pooling in the engine cowl. So that's a bummer. You think it could be exhuast plate gasket?

  • @TheAfterWorkGarage

    @TheAfterWorkGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@dkr63p It could be a gasket, but it could also be a lose fitting where the water standpipe goes up from the pump through the leg, and into the powerhead. Sometimes there's a plastic or rubber part at the top of those that can fall off or get mis-seated and cause leaks. It would at least be worth checking.

    @@terryvandervort6068 That's interesting. I'm not familiar with that motor, but from what I've seen, it looks like the thermostat is on the back of the engine block, just above the cylinder head water jacket.
