1981 PBA National - Earl Anthony vs. Ernie Schlegel pt1
Спорт
The date was March 7, 1981 at the Imperial Lanes in Toledo, Ohio when Earl Anthony qualified number 1 for the PBA National. He faced Ernie Schlegel, who was wearing one of his famous outfits. Ernie was coming off wins against Dave Davis, and Dick Weber. It was an exciting match that came down to the final ball that saw Earl win his 35th career title, and his 4th PBA National Championship up to that point in time. In my opinion, Earl was the best. He accomplished more in a shorter amount of time than any other bowler in PBA history. The '81 PBA National was Earl's 3rd victory in 4 weeks, and he won a 4th title a few weeks later in Garden City. He was dominate in 1981 after coming back from the heart attack a few years back. In fact, Earl went on to become the Bowler of the Year in 1981, for the 4 time. He went on to become bowler of the year, once again, in 1982 and 1983 before retiring prior to the 1984 season. He truly went out at the top of his game. As far as Schlegel, his style was timeless (like Anthony's). If you watch the 1996 TPC, (the famous Pederson stone 8 victory), his style is basically the same. It was also good to see tournament director, Harry Golden, a few times, as Earl requested 4 re-racks throughout the match..probably Harry's busiest time on TV! I hope you enjoy the action.

Earl Anthony was my favorite bowler when I was a kid - I still remember how he won his 40th and 41st titles. Awesome bowler. About a month after his untimely passing, I went bowling and dedicated my best game to him - I threw a 220 that day.
Ernie looks like he's going to the disco after bowling.

Aside from premier quality bowling skills by Anthony Et al during the heyday of the Professional Bowler's Tour, you see them conduct themselves as gentlemen. None of chest-pounding, growls, grimaces, "see how great I am" after rolling 1 strike behaviors you see today. That was class!

Those antics were actually encouraged as bowling struggled to stay on network TV in the 1990s.
I loved Earl Anthony. Watching him bowl was like seeing Nolan Ryan pitch, in that when Ryan pitched, there was the anticipation of a no-hitter, and when Anthony bowled, there was that same anticipation of a 300 game.
I liked Ernie schlegel back then because the PBA was so straight laced. Both he and his wife were thorns in the sides of the powers that be. Of course I loved Earl Anthony. He was class personified. There will never be anyone like Earl Anthony. Thanks for posting.
There was nobody better than earl

Earl was the Man. Met him and his wife in West Germany in 83. He's my bowling idol. I still use an his, Ebonite Mag 11. Bought it and another Ebonite at the Bowling Center in Mannheim Germany. The same center where I met Earl. He was the Kevin VanDam of bowling. Somewhere, I have tapes of his matches. I might even have the one that Norm Duke got his first win. He beat Earl for the title.
This was on my date of birth!! How awesome!!!
Earl Anthony was an inspiration to me.. his smooth style strives consistency over power; still good to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Earl was a machine. My favorite bowler of all time. Still have my Earl Anthony, Ebonite Mag 11 bowling ball. Had the great pleasure to meet Earl when he toured Europe and he came to Mannheim, Germany, where I was stationed at. I still do my Earl Anthony hand clap after a strike or spare.

After Earl retired, I migrated over to PDW. I liked his Dad. The only book that I ever bought on bowling was Dick Weber's. From the info above, it mentions that he had a heart attack sometime prior to the 81 season. News to me.

PaBasser damn never knew that. Earl was the best though. Walter of course is second and I'll say him And Pete are tied even though Pete has more titles Walter Ray has always beaten Pete when they played together
Great video, takes me back! In the late 70s I'd bowl in my Jr. league Sat. mornings, do chores, then settle in for PBA and Wide World of Sports on ABC. Being a control-throwing lefty, Earl was my inspiration. Thanks for posting!

Your Saturdays were just like mine! Except for it being the late 60s/early 70s.
@FlytrapStudios The perfect delivery that hardly made noise when the ball touched the alley. That's professional bowling craftsmanship at it's best.

Earl was the man, he was the Clint Eastwood of bowling!!
Think how much more money Earl would have earned if they put sponsors on their shirts/balls like they do today... but then you wouldn't have had the legend that is Ernie Schlegel. Thank you Mr. Bowling - this is truly classic.
Earl threw Ebonite exclusively at this time. But you are right, the Mark X did hit like a truck.
THE G.O.A.T.= Earl Anthony( RIP)🙏

Yeah, I like my Big Hit Particle ball. I just missed bowling my first ever perfect game with it a little over a month ago.(288) Never came that close before! It's a great ball. Thanks for the birthday kudos!
Kingpin brought me here
I agree. The "Don Carter" style consisted of crooking his elbow, tucking his pinky, holding his thumb in the 10 o'clock position, and stroking forward through the ball. Very different from Earl Anthony, who gets under the ball then releases with a side stroke. In the 50's and 60's Don Carter was the dominant bowler, but I'm sorry to say that it was not humanly possible to average 230 back then. More like 210 at his very best. When he was hot, though, he was capable of an 800 series...
@waterfordjim Chris Schenkel (play by play) and Nelson Burton Jr. (color analyst). Legends!
Man...check out Schlegel. That's just unholy. Earl though, is always the man. My second favorite lefty (Johnny P. is my number one favorite)
Classic bowling!
Earl was like the professor in bowling anything you did not know Earl could tell you
One of the announcers said “pretty lady” at the very end, talking of Mrs. Anthony. He would have been SO fired today if he had said something so “OFFENSIVE”......
was this urethane?
The lane surface was lacequr. This type of lane condition required basically a straight shot into the 1-3 pocket for the right handers and the 1-2 pocket for the lefthanders.
It's a little early, but happy 26th!
What ball is Earl using?
Keith, do you have the Schlegel vs. Davis match? I'd love to see that.
I like Ernie's blingbling shirt ! :D
Ernie looks like dirk diggler in boogie nights gettin a fluff session after this beating
i'd like to see the dude compete against these fellas..
ERNIES SHIRT IS DOPE! ID SPORT THAT1
walter ray and earl anthony are tied basically for best bowler ever they each have either 41 or 42 titles
those are the A-2s right?
not anymore. Walter Ray Williams Jr.
Yeah I'd like to see that too. 1983 Cleveland Open, right?
Nice shirt, dude...
Earl needs to work on his backswing and his power. When you start struggling against Disco Stu, you know it's time to implement some changes. With a little better form, Earl might've been great.
When Earl want a rerack. Earl gets a repack. Could you imagine if the PBA said no? LMAO. Earl Anthony, greatest bowler that ever lived!
Darkk Mane's guide on how to play AP Sion brought me here.

Earl always leaves the 7 on his very first shot.
I always liked crew-cut Earl better than hip Earl.
I wonder what time this aired? I was born at 10:17 that morning.
I don't know why everyone says he's just like Don Carter. Don's elbow was much more "crooked" than Earl's during the approach.
I believe so.
You notice when Earl ask for a rerack he never gets an argument or turned down? It's good to be the one isn't it?

that seems to be the biggest missing tape there is!
nobody can do better throwing straight
These were on VHS tapes. I think beta went out in about 1979/1980. New technology! ha!
A year later, wouldn't Anthony break the 1 million dollar mark in the same place?
I always liked Earl Anthony.. he just had a nice easy swing. I watched a match once when he was bowling as a senior - I guess a couple years before he passed away - he hit the pocket flush every time and I swear each ball was no more than half a centimeter away from the next when it hit the pins. It was just dumb luck he didn't get 300 - it was like 268 or something.. and he won whatever tournament that was..
I'd like to see norm duke's first win in the pba
Happy early 26th thunderstruck! I see you enjoy using that ball made by Storm bowling products eh?
anceint people rocks !!! XD . bowling very alot more competitive then . its all about skill
Abadullah Johnson ??

Its disco stu
Even way back in the day some older commentators were hitting on player's girlfriends/wives.
Why is he dressed like a flame?
Today this boy would most certainly be welcomed in the rainbow crowd. LOL!
Lol. Thanks.
You you gotta bowl at 9:00 but disco at 9:30
this is how ppl dressed in the 80s...........? dam lol
I thought he was a girl!..the guy in the white..You could've fooled me Ernie..😗 great bowlers though.
i think that for it to be real bowling you have to throw a hook ball otherwise its not bowling
@GlorifiedTruth Your kidding right
Pretty Lady
I've bowled against Ernie a couple times in the 90's. I wish I would have seen this before that, I could have razzed him about his attire.
LMAO.... what was Ernie thinking when he decided to put on that outfit!..... hey h'es stylish and different gotta give him that.
FARUTE SALAD!
she is a pretty lady
LMAO.... what was Ernie thinking when he decided to put on that outfit!..... hey h'es stylish and different gotta give him that. Earl's wife has beautiful eyes!
Is Ernie a Trans?
"pretty lady isn't she" What the heck? I thought this was about bowling.
