Seve's playing partner Jack Newton who tied for second had a severe almost life-ending accident when he walked into a spinning propeller of the Cessna he was about to board. Luckily survived the accident but lost his right arm and other prolonged issues but rose to become productive and sucessful in his life. He managged to teach himself to play golf wtih one arm often shooting tin the mid-80s. WOW!

Loved Jack Newton.Followed him round at the first open i ever attended at Carnoustie. I remember his caddie stuffing four packs of cigarettes in his bag on the first tee!!😄 Never got to see the playoff as my parents had only booked accomodation to cover the four rounds!! 😔

Such a pleasure watching golf played by individuals and not automatons. Today they swing the same, wear the same ghastly attire, have all the technology yet score much the same.

Thank you for posting this as well as the other years... I've watched a few already and plan on watching most of the others many times... I love the Masters and Augusta National, especially when Persimmon drivers were in play and the course was played as it was supposed too...

Next to Tom Weiskoff, I always found Seve's swing the most pleasing to watch

Love Seve. Downloaded and stream his short game video regularly. Miss his presence. My Dad died from complications related to Glioblastoma as well. 😔

I love watching a 44 year old Masters I've come to know every hole over the years.

Years ago NBC put mikes in the stands in a game between the Jets and I can't remember the other team and broadcast a game w/o those obnoxious never-shut-up announcers and it was the best football game I've ever watched on tv. This piece of 40 year old tape was just as nice.

Thank you for the footage during this difficult time. It’s a shame technology can’t improve the quality of the older footage.

Not your usual Masters broadcast. If your'e a Seve fan skip to 46:27. Commentary also begins there. Arnie and Jack playing together some consolation. Seve played Amen Corner +3 and Newton -3 in case your'e wondering.

Jack Newton at 15th...narrowly missing his eagle putt to get within one. Then does what every real golfer should do...reaches down for his candy stick for a puff. Beautiful, just beautiful.

It amazes me how on the twelfth hole, how you rarely see a putt made, longer than ten feet. The green looks fairly level, but it refuses to yield many birdies. I think it might have played the toughest, relative to par, in a recent Master's.

Seve Ballesteros at his best was the most exciting and gifted player of all time. He lives among the golfing gods as one of the all-time greatest.When they asked Tiger Woods to describe Seve Ballesteros he said one word “GENIUS”

Seve had buckets of charisma, and his style of play, was exciting to behold. The playoff loss, in 1987, seemed particularly hard for him. I believe that he won another Open either at Lytham and St. Anne's, or the "Old Course".

I love watching old golf to look at the club designs. So so so bad compared to today lol but man I remember growing up and my grandad teaching me early 90s with his wooden drivers. Just recently getting back into golf. In his honor! He was a pga amateur in his days so he taught me well. I JUST CANT GET MY SLICE ON DRIVES TO GO AWAY COMPLETELY!!

what i remember most about that year, was a few months later, Jack would win his 4th US Open, at Baltusrol, and Seve, unforturnately would get stuck in traffic on the way to the course, get there late for his starting time, and get disqualified, which was so unfortunate.

My dad had tickets for the Saturday round at Baltusrol and I was excited by the prospect of being able to see Seve, only to learn on Friday afternoon that he had been DQ'd. I had to console myself by walking 18 holes with the King, who was off with a marker (Dow Finsterwald), and then after a brief lunch with my dad, following the Golden Bear for 18 playing in the final group with Aoki.

Seve Also got swamped in the car park by fans wanting his autograph which delayed him getting to the tee and lead to his disqualification for this event. Along with Jack was favourite for the US Open that year and I think it would’ve been a brilliant spectacle to see them both go down the line against each other.

Arnie,after holing putt :"I read in a book by some Nicklaus guy that you should always get past the hole so as to get a read on the return ...." I would love to know what the actual banter was between the two greats.

Fuzzy's back must have been acting up, he was in serious pain.

I remember it as if it were yesterday. Arnie simply just dusted Jack in that final round and we were beginning to wonder if the Golden Bear was done winning majors. Of course, he put that to rest by winning the US Open and PGA later that year, lol. I actually got to see them both at Baltusrol that year on Saturday morning. Followed Arnie for all 18 going off with a marker (Dow Finsterwald), had lunch with my dad, and then followed Jack for all 18 playing with Aoki in the final pairing.

Who was the pro golfer who hit the tee shot on the 16th hole and put it in the back of the pin? It was noisy with the player over Jack Nicklaus, but it became Ips and disappeared in several years. If I was a coach now, I would have resurrected it immediately.

I was really enjoying watching this without the commentary, until 46:28 came.

Where Is Seve TV interview and green jacket ceremony? It will be great to hear his words after being the youngest and the first europeas player to win the Master.

Newton would lose an arm a few years later when he accidentally walked into a propeller.

It's unfortunate that this is the only footage available as it is rather odd. The first 45 minutes has only ambient sound with no CBS commentary or graphics, and at times seems to be an edited group of random shots. The last 45 minutes or so is better and has commentary but does not seem to be the exact as-aired version as it has some random shots of cameras being moved and similar things that would normally not be shown. No Butler Cabin ceremony here either.

Tbh, I like the silent footage a lot more than the commentary one. I only miss the graphic to inform me of the current standings. So silent, so nice and just like it actually is to be at a golf tournament (I attended Sony Open in Hawaii 2018)

Was there ever anything more painful to watch than those Cabin Ceremonies? Check out the 82 with Stadler. It's horrible. They just worked the man over. He won, and they treated him like a freak: "What's with your bad temper? You like being called Walrus?" I wanted to go back 38 years and give Craig a hug

And 54:00 Jack Newton was about to light one in front of the camera, but decided against it. Those were the times you could improve your conditioning not by lifting weights or something like that: just quit smoking.

Interesting the Ben Wright mentions Seve's back issues as far back as 1979. Would take away years of great golf eventually.

Yes, he always knew he’d have a short career. During the 79 open, he used to hang upside down for ages each morning to stretch his back. Testament to his ability that he was at the top so long. Think he had some accident with his back whilst boxing as a teenager.

That's the correct pronuncition in Spanish, as the L's are rolled, sounding much like the y's, in the English language. My Spanish teacher, in high school, would likely cringe at my attempt at explaining this i'd think to be a common misunderstanding, as I'm not even able to satisfactorily relate it I'm afraid. But it's something close enough, and I'm late for a tee time. Slainte'

Hmm...no. Up until 1983, all caddies at the Masters were black and employed by Augusta National; golfers were not allowed to bring their own bag jockeys to the tournament. Clifford Roberts himself even is quoted as saying: “As long as I’m alive, golfers will be white and caddies will be black.”

Barking_Mad First, there was not a black only caddie rule at Augusta. Second, he meant the golf was better, he never mentioned the culture of the game and thirdly, people like you that judge so easily a time that you never lived in, should probably look at the hypocrisy in your own life, I’m sure there is a lot. And lastly, him saying golf was better, no matter how he meant it, is his opinion and you have no right to tell him that he can’t feel that way! Go away.

@@GolfAfter50 Actually, I think the depth of players today and quality of PGA fields is much better and more entertaining than the 1980s. I would say the culture of golf as it pertains to amateurs has devolved and you now have cretins on the golf course screaming with every shot, playing music, guys playing from the blues who can barely take the club back and players not following etiquette like repairing ball marks, raking traps and waving groups up to hit on par 3s. Perhaps it has to do with the equipment making the game more accessible to those who won't/can't learn the game properly and view golf as nothing more than a fun-time activity.

And it's a great day for this young Cinderella..Cinderella story 320 yards hes got a out a 9 iron I think

Great to watch?? Worst coverage of Masters I have ever seen. I though Seve was not even playing up till very late in the coverage. Poor, very poor.

Palmer was at least a dozen years past his prime here (although he had a decent 1980) and we all thought Nicklaus was headed that way after a terrible 1979, only 1 major since 1975 and given the beating Palmer put on him in this final round. But remarkably, Nicklaus rebounded to take 2 of the next 3 majors for his last great year on tour.

Jack is out of Ohio and was a stand-out amateur before turning pro in 61...he's set...here's the takeaway and the swing...IT'S A HIGH FLYING 1 IRON!....It's a way back...A WAY BACK! IT'S OOON!!!

It wasn’t being broadcast until you hear the announcers. They decided to broadcast basketball or something. Purely coincidence that a European was winning.

They really beat up on Stadler...check out that one. All they talked about was how he almost blew it, then followed up with questions about his temper and whether he liked being called Walrus. It was beyond cruel.

I have watched many of these old Masters final day videos, but this is the first one that does not show the Green Jacket presentation. Very disappointing as it’s the great Severiano Ballesteros!

Last yr for bermuda greens. Starting in '81 they had slick bentgrass on those hilly greens.

This is simply raw footage of a small group of holes from about 13 through 16 is all. One or two camera guys catching everyone coming through at the time. It's not the TV feed. I like it as this is as close to the feeling of being there that you'll ever get ...

This is all Masters had to come up to upload ?!?! They really don't have better footage of 1980 Masters ?!?! I find that hard to believe. Looks like something some monkeys spliced together and never got edited ?!?! If it's because Ballesteros isn't an American that's crazy. Come on ! Find better footage and re-upload.

Palmer's caddy should have laid the flag behind the hole.

Trying to guess some of the players, not doing that well, except the stars of course. Watching this because of the virus isolation, and all I can here is coughing 😳
