    Eric -- that was hysterical regarding the batteries, your reaction was classic, I laughed right along with you... Most important was the content of using the water-based sealer. I used the oil based and man it took some time to sand it off. Thanks for the video.

    Great video Eric and Vicki. I enjoyed this a lot. Finishing is always hard and tend to do ok. I made a sign and brushed a coat and got the drips on the back. Didn't realize you can cut them off. That is good to know for next time.

    Hi Eric, I had the same problem as Woodchuck Signs. I used oil base sanding sealer and waited 2 days for it to dry. It still gummed up my sandpaper, so I had to rip the finish back down and start all over again. This screw up took 2 more days, so I wasted a lot of time and labor using oil base. Your sign looked great and the small bit of comedy with the silent film made this video a bit humorous and educational. Great job!

    Good times! Also Great recovery with the voice over Eric! Being a sound engineer, I'm so anal about putting new batteries in both packs almost every shoot. Better piece of mind, after this once happened to me. One last hint of advice for when you shoot outdoors like that, if your mic came with a little foam wind screen to slide over the capsule, this is when to use it.

    Great looking sign Eric, my question is, you said you apply the sanding sealer as soon as you get the boards home so are you not concerned about the moisture content? wont the sealer prevent the board from drying to the point that you like?

  • @oldave100

    @oldave100

    Good question Glenn. On the select pine on the redwood I use I've never found one with excessive moisture in the board. I really only have that issue with the cedar fencing.

    Hey Eric. Great looking sign. I have a lot of milled cedar and want to make some signs for family and friends. From your video you said that you don’t have to use sanding sealer on cedar. I hope I can save a step by not using it. Can you confirm that I don’t have to use sanding sealer on cedar please. Thanks.

    Hey Danny, cedar doesn't bleed at all when using flat or matte finish spray. You should be good to go. Just make sure your moisture percentage in your lumber is under 12%

    Okay now I understand the Sanding Sealer. Saw you mention it and don't remember ever hearing you mention it before. Wondering what signs do you use the Pine for? I use pine for a lot of mine, because of the cost of cedar here, but this video is the first time I've seen you work with pine. Secondly, you mentioned bleeding; I've had the marsh ink as well as acrylic bleed, and found out if I use Minwax Wood Conditioner after I cut my pattern, leave it for a few minutes then apply the paint/ink, the bleed is minimal, or non-existent. (Follow the instructions on the can.) Of course, this bleed happens from the wood being too dry, having been in my shop or it was too dry when I got it. Sometimes, I'll put a second coat on if I notice that the wood really soaks up the conditioner. You don't want it to "pool" on the wood, but you want to see it set on there a little. Then I'll paint it, let it dry, and sand it.

    Barb, I use the pine because I don't have cedar available to me that's wider than 5 inch. So that's the reason I go to 1 x 12 Pine. I just use the sanding sealer on pine because it's susceptible to bleeding. I don't use it on cedar or redwood. It sounds as though you are using the wood conditioner much like I use sanding sealer. I want all of my boards to be dry down to approximately 6%. Glad you found a process that works for you. Thank you for watching and the feedback, Eric

    To get cedar wider than the fence pieces, I either have to go to a mill work place, or Menards shows they have it. I never realized you worked on pine. I always thought you used only cedar. Nice to know. Since starting my sign making, I strive to get the quality I see in you and your dad's signs, and always felt mine were lacking from having to use pine. As for the sanding sealer, I may have to try it for the pieces I know will be sitting in the shed waiting for me as I've had them curl on me. Wish I would've known about the sealer when we got our deck wood earlier this year; it curled something fierce. Wonder if it would have helped. (Making another deck next year... will have to try it.) Many thanks for all your videos, and I'm sure I'll be bugging you with my two cents on other videos *smile*

    Thank you Barb for watching and your feedback. We don't have too much humidity out here in AZ but I have had my pine cup on me if I don't get sanding sealer on it right away. I make sure and apply it immediately after I get it to the shop. You can always email me directly with you 2 cents eric@makeawoodsign.com. Have a great week....

    Eric, under which circumstances do you use the brush on vs the spray urethane? Thanks!

  • @oldave100

    @oldave100

    On bigger signs I always put at least 2 coats of spray on first Then I brush coats because it's allot less expensive to brush coat. 1 brush coat is probably equal to 10 coats with a spray can and the spray cans cost about $10 per can. For smaller signs I pretty much use the spray can for convenience. Hope this helps, Eric.
