1979: PETER COOK: comedy idol of a generation? | Person to Person | Classic Interview | BBC Archive

Ойын-сауық

David Dimbleby asks some probing questions in an interview with writer and satirist Peter Cook, the leading light of the great British satire boom in the 1960s.
Is the profanity laden 'Derek and Clive' - so different to the material that made him a household name - indicative of a creative lull? Can anything be funny, or are there limits? Has Dudley Moore's success in Hollywood left him high and dry? What is it like to be the comedy idol of a generation?
This clip is from Person to Person. Originally broadcast 2 August, 1979.

Haven’t seen this interview before, little bit surprised at David Dimbleby’s persistence pushing the idea that Peter and Dudley had somehow fallen out and he was now a failure…!

One of the greatest comedians EVER!! Massive influence on the Pythons, who in turn influenced everyone else. His interview with Clive Anderson where he plays x4 different characters is genius. Shame he had such an alcohol problem. The Pete & Dud sketches from Not Only But Also are also superb.

So Dim ble by gets to interview the funniest man of all time, chooses to ask hard line unimaginative questions and utterly wastes the most wonderful opportunity to record PC for posterity. Well done Dim.

Absolutely! Peter was an absolute genius. The Derek and Clive recordings have always made me laugh and named my cats after the characters.

This is a unnecessarily arrogant and aggressive interview which is well handled by Peter. Well done.

"This no time for false modesty, I agree completely..." Great retort to this inane tabloid style line of questioning. Basically, "were you a drunk, have you dried up and how can you possibly do it without Dud..."

I think Why Bother is the best improv comedy I've ever heard. I do love Derek and Clive but Why Bother is just a masterclass in free association comedy. Peter didn't "need" Dudley but a lot of his comedy does need somebody for him to bounce it off. Maybe that's what Dimbelby was trying to get at.

Is anything being gained by trying to rile Peter? Good on him for batting back all those deeply personal questions. I really like Dimbleby his tour of the UK’s waters telling stories as he went was really enjoyable. Here he seems caught between two stools. He wants to get the best out of Peter. Yet seems to be unsure if he can get the comedy gold. Instead he goes for making him confess to personal problems and the impact on his career.

Dimbleby is a typical old-school BBC stiff. ‘Derek and Clive’ was just an alternative ‘adult version’ that they did. Pete and Dud did ‘filth’ far better than Bernard Manning, Chubby Brown, Jim Davidson or Jimmy Carr.

I think Dimbleby was appalled by Derek & Clive and takes his headmasterly disappoval out on Peter. For his part i think Peter was struggling psychologically and began drinking very hard from the '70's onwards. When asked why he said it was out of despair. I daresay there was quite a lot going on behind the facade which we didn't appreciate. Dying at 58 tells its own story.

Out of your depth Dimbleby. All he and tossers like Alan Titchmarsh could throw at Peter was the 'you're all washed up', 'you didn't fulfill your potential' rubbish. Peter was a genius regardless. What are Dimbleby and Titchmarsh?
