I miss my 6.9 I have a 7.3 idi, but nothing ever piped like the 6.9. With the back windows rolled down in my old 86 F350 4door it sounded like a machine gun going off when driving by a guardrail.

These were common when I started trucking in the 70s. You could always tell when one was coming because they had a sound of their own.. Thanks for sharing. It brought back some good memories. I drove over 4 million miles and sold my last truck in 2011 mostly because of the new engines with all that exhaust crap on em.

Out of the all the 4 Stroke V8s they put in American Trucks (3408, E9 Mack, 903, etc...) VT903s sounded nasty, in a good way.

I ran box freight , flatbeds ,tankers and low boys over the years, enjoyed the low boys the best👍Keep on trucking brother !

The 3408TA was turbo'd in most automotive style applications ( single turbo ), with manifolds and connector pipes to the turbo like a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke. Look up "16V149 V8 Cat" and you can see a cabover Kenworth with a 3408 running with engine shots

They were ok on the level but not for hill country, they are a shorter stroke and high rpm engine. I don't like to rev mine to the max, there rated 320hp at 3000 rpm, I only run mine up to 21-2200. The military versions are high rpm and are meant for short power runs, I think they put out around 500+ hp, you couldn't run that constant on hyway for long. But ya they do sound good, everyone in my area knows when I'm coming down the road, lol. Massey Ferguson used allot of them in there 4wd ag tractors too.

cletrac 12c Thanks for the reply. In Australia they seem to be most common in short bonnet fords and Kenworth’s. In the latest Cummins magazine I seen at my Dads, it says they are approaching 50 years of being manufactured. And I think in its latest incarnation it has low pressure common rail fuel injection and is rated at 650hp.

A lot of it has to do with the cam timing. The 903, despite its size is a high revving engine with torque and horsepower higher in the range compared to a traditional straight 6 diesel. If the cam timing, fuel pump calibration and turbo were configured to bring the power in a little sooner, the driving experience would be much different. I believe it would rank right up there with the Mack, Cat and Scania V8s.

I just checked with Pittsburgh power about rebuilding my 903 and they said that cummins no longer has anything parts wise in stock. I found a VTA-903 and was going to use it but same parts availability issues. Unfortunately I will have to rely on aftermarket kits and old shops for parts but I'm in the same situation, low usage so it's not too big of a issue and being there aren't many running around anymore I think it's worth the effort.

When it comes to serviceability your almost out of luck, most people I know that can repair them or for that matter owned them new are pushing 70-80 years old. I know of 2 shops that can work on them but they tend to favor newer trucks because of faster parts turnaround but will work on the old stuff when things are slow.
