They also made some of THE best AK's, and magazines among other military weapons of the Warsaw pact. I know DDR AK-47's and AKM's are very desirable here in the USA. Plus the DDR magazines are some of the best made. I often wonder sometimes how far the USSR could have gone had there been a full blown conventional war in Europe. Im sure the east Germans would have been one heck of a foe to go up against. Crazy how today we're essentially in another cold war. I was born in 82 so I didn't get to really experience the cold war. I do remember bits and pieces from school in those days. I remember our teacher once a week pulling down the map of the USSR, and explaining how lucky we were to be Americans. I remember watching Red Dawn in the late 80's, and how our gym teacher just assumed all of us boys would join the military. Looking back at it now, the entire gym class was set up mainly to support just the guys 😆. I remember all the girls just sitting against the wall while we all did the obstacle course over and over again. I remember watching the wall fall with my parents on our tiny 13" TV while eating dinner. We lived in the middle of nowhere and only got 1 channel 'CBS' . I remember the gulf war for sure. Many of my friends father's went over there. I remember in school we would watch it on TV. Then I'd watch the news with my parents while eating dinner. I've studied the cold war a lot, and it's very interesting how we're heading right back into one. Only this time I don't think it will stay cold. Not for long.

In fact in 89 a month before the balloon went up we spoke to some civilians in a bar in east berlin who told us they were headed down to Hungary. They didn’t say why. Only that something big was gonna happen. That was rare for civilians to speak to us. We thought nothing of it. That same month we went to West Germany by train & it’s funny coz be had a conversation about the wall. And I distinctly remember saying that we would never see it come down in our lifetime. When we got back to West Berlin, within days it was all kicking off.

So here’s something interesting I recently found out: Apparently a bell was installed inside the building which would ring every three minutes to notify the soldiers that they should move their rifle from their left hand to their right one (and vice-versa). This was done to insure that none of them would collapse due to weakened blood pressure.

No, there was a button near the foot of each guard. If either guard needed to switch hands he shifted the front of his boot over the button and pressed it and the buzzer/bell would sound The other guard would acknowledge with his own button. Then, in time, each would change the their weapon to the other side. It was not a 'secret'. It was loud enough to be heard by anyone standing near the memorial.

Both German armies weren‘t as German as the previous Wehrmacht or Reichswehr but the NVA was more traditional than the Bundeswehr but not „more German“. Both had their traditions rooted in the Napoleonic wars and saw the 6th coalition war as an act of freeing themselves from a foreign power by sheer willpower. Despite both of the armies trying (TRYING!) to distance themselves from the Wehrmacht both the NVA and Bundeswehr had Wehrmacht uniforms. The NVA kept the general cut of the jacket, the helmet and the colour (Feldgrau) and for the Volksmarine the uniforms of the Kriegsmarine (though the captains had dark blue jackets for some reason). The Bundeswehr kept the M38 Stahlhelm for their paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger), maintained the uniforms of the old Luftwaffe and those of the Kriegsmarine for the new Luftwaffe and Bundesmarine. The new M92 combat helmet is also heavily influenced by the original Stahlhelm. Both German armies were still pretty German but the NVA had more tradition and still celebrated in the style of the Wehrmacht. Both were quite a mixed bag. The Bundeswehr has the Wachbattalion (Guard battalion) which is the official successor to the 1st Prussian Guard Regiment on foot while the NVA marched in the signature Prussian Paradeschritt. Curiously though, the Bundeswehr was (for a short time) known as the „Bundeswehrmacht“ (Federal Wehrmacht) or „Neue Wehrmacht“ (new Wehrmacht). Here you can hear it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3x_s7KTZM2-pJs.html

@@scanida5070 Thanks for the link. Interesting. But I think it was the british journalists little joke to refer to the Bundeswehr as the new Wehrmacht. Adenauer who was german chancellor at the time would never have allowed the military to call itself that. You see he came from the Rhineland and detested anything even remotely prussian. Also he was catholic, and there was a degree of animosity between protestant prussia and the catholic south, dating back to Bismarck and the north german confederation. I know that Prussia was abolished in 1947, but culture is culture. And did you look at the uniforms in the video? If anything, they looked american, except for the field cap. No, I don't think that the Bundeswehr is a proper german army,

@@daveanderson3805 It really was called New Wehrmacht. That’s because “Wehrmacht” was a common term for army in German. “Luftwaffe” is still a common term in Germany for airforce and that’s how our airforce is called. This German news reel refers to the Bundeswehr as Wehrmacht as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGRly86kkq3Hcc4.html The uniforms you saw in these previous videos were still Americanised though these didn’t stay for long. Everything was “Germanised”. The only thing “ungerman” maybe were the helmets which looked nearly identical to the American M1 but they were actually designed independently and were based of off a Swedish model and the American M1. This video shows the farewell of General Adolf Heusinger (yes, THE Heusinger), everything looks pretty German: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHWpw7KlmdCnctY.html Like I said, the Bundesmarine also wore Kriegsmarine uniforms as seen here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaynlcWDgZbJcrg.html The (new) Luftwaffe first wore dark uniforms before switching to the traditional dark blue in the 60s. images.app.goo.gl/Ym6jkVTr1jqCE1c88 Also quite notable is the implementation of the M92 which was intentionally based of off the original Stahlhelm which is clearly visible: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIip3LqvfM6dcbQ.html On special occasions, the Wachbattalion also wears Prussian uniforms: images.app.goo.gl/Jd2UpGnRR6qiinzZ7 I apologise if I overwhelmed you a bit with all these links, I just wanted to proof my point :) Of course, like I said, the Bundeswehr wasn’t as traditional as the NVA but still German.

I don’t think the pact forces except for the fanatical ones would have died for soviet adventures. But the Slavic nucleus of the USSR (Russians + Ukrainians + Belarusians) would have definitely fought to the last man and the last bullet if they were convinced that they were under “attack” . It’s a shame that such close and brotherly people (Russians and Ukrainians) are fighting today. But I am somewhat happy that Russians are taking extreme measures to avoid civilian casualties even at great risk to their lives. I don’t think any American tank would have stopped in the middle of a war zone to avoid civilian deaths. It’s obvious that Russians despite having the ability to use the American “shock and awe” tactics are holding back a lot. The Ukrainian and Russian delegations are meeting at the border today. Hope there is a ceasefire soon and Ukraine returns to mother Russia.

What amazes me the most, apart from their discipline and excellent "standard of saluting" is how they managed to retain the Prussian style of dress and drill. There would have been some tough negotiations with the Soviet command. From all accounts, they were a very effective force. The officer corps were treated dismally by the Western authorities after re-unification.

There are docus on KZread which describe the process... The old Prussian generals basically presented the Russians with a fait accompli and things were still too ucked fup in the USSR for them to really get angry and oppose the plan. There's a funny anecdote told by one of the original generals that when they went to the Soviet occupation forces HQ in all their Prussian regalia the Soviet guards were so surprised they didn't even move, either to salute or to block entry.

Actually, the suggestion to reinstate traditional uniforms came from the Soviet military. The early uniforms were modelled on the Soviet style, and according to one documentary the Soviet minister of defense (Bulganin?) reprimanded Heinz Hoffman for not wearing a uniform that was based on German traditions.
