my father was a part of the education of the officers. in fact he was a "oberstleutnant" back then. he told me so many great stories from his 30 years in the military. he passed away 3 years ago. this parade here brings a tear to my eyes in memory of him. i was a little boy back then and watched in on TV

Thank you to your father for his service. In USSR GDR was known for quality goods, whether it was IFA trucks, men's suits or Robotron 16-bit computers. It was also our closest and strongest ally. Sorry that Gorbachev betrayed you.

Yep! Professor Mark Felton made a video about it! In fact, there is rare footage of this helmet being used by Wehrmacht forces in combat. It was never adopted because the Wehrmacht didn't have its priorities straight and cared more about aesthetics.

@@Nellis202 Yes, most modern day helmets are similar in shape to the German WW2 era helmets (M35), but that doesn't mean anything. Modern day helmets are made out of kevlar, and not steel, so this is just semantics.

Ну, может быть все дело в том, что для многих поляков создание социалистической Польши выглядело как новая оккупация Россией? Исторический контекст который сложился в 1930-1940-е в отношении польского вопроса для Советского Союза был исключительно не благоприятным. Для очень многих людей, особенно националистически настроенных, все это выглядело как новая оккупация Россией. Исторические параллели напрашивались самые прямые и исключительно неприятные. И хуже того - совсем недавние по историческим меркам. XX век был богат на событиях, но все-таки со времен самых трагичных страниц в истории Польши (не считая Второй мировой) не прошло на тот момент и 150 лет. Это только кажется, что много. Но в 1940-е чей-то пра-пра-пра дедушка вполне мог бы быть свидетелем разорения русскими войсками варшавской Праги. XIX век для Польши был черным: два польских восстания просто утопленных русскими войсками в крови, следом последовавшие депортации поляков за Урал, лишение Польши автономии в составе империи и превращения захваченного королевства в обычные имперские провинции. На все это наслоилась советско-польская война в ходе гражданской войны 1918-1922. Интересно, почему же поляки в исторической памяти недолюбливают Россию и проецируют это на уровне бытового шовинизма на всех русских? Факты вещь упрямая. Россия в XIX веке фактически уничтожила почти на 100 лет польскую государственность. А вот Польша русскую государственность никогда не уничтожала. И не потому, что поляки - хорошие, а русские - плохие. А потому, что так сложилась история. Поэтому у вас на поляков нет поводов обижаться, а у них на вас - есть. Ну, или во всяком случае их несопоставимо меньше. Поставьте себя на место поляков. Как бы вы смотрели на них, если бы в XIX веке Ржечпосполита захватила Российскую империю, всякие ваши попытки отвоевать независимость она утопла бы в крови и репрессиях, а потом и вовсе превратила ваши земли в набор провинций власть в которых перешла бы или приезжим, или лояльным "коллаборантам". Мне кажется, в народной памяти русских поляки бы сегодня при таком раскладе соседствовали бы с Гитлером. Или как в том замечательном анекдоте: "А нас за шо?!" Это конечно все во многом наносное. Но исторический контекст международных отношений было бы неплохо учитывать, рассуждая про всякого рода "парадоксы". Потому, что нет никакого парадокса. Век крови из уничтожения страны, подавления двух восстаний и принудительных высылок в Сибирь не могли парировать в полной мере ни какие пиар-усилия в духе "польские подразделения заходят в освобожденные города первыми". Ох, ну и конечно, же в отличие от русский патриотов этот контекст так хорошо знали всякого рода специалисты в "университетах" советологии взращённых ЦРУ в годы холодной войны. Которые конечно же помогли подлить в эту бочку дегтя еще черпак известной субстанции. Это не значит, что нужно "платить и каяться". Это значит, что нужно объективно смотреть на вещи и честно отдавать себе отчет, что вы (как и все остальные вокруг) не белые и пушистые. ...ну и про болгар такое же неуместное обобщение.

Неправильная посылка дает неправильный вывод. Русские не уничтожали государственность Польши. Никакие факты это не подтверждают. Государственность Польши уничтожили сами поляки. Без смеха и поп корна нельзя читать о событиях 16-17 века, все эти рокоши, шляхетские вольности и либерум вето характеризует это государство , как веселый дурдом. Удивительно, как это они так долго еще были в виде государства.Окончательный раздел Польши это все таки 18 век и что то вы стыдливо умалчиваете, что Россия взяла свое православное, а коронную Польшу дерибанили Австрия и Пруссия. Вот пусть к ним и обращаются со своей лютой нелюбовью. Наполеон реанимировал этот труп и он как зомби опять поперся в Россию и в 1812 году не цветочки собирали поляки, а мстили. Царь батюшка так уничтожил государственность, что царем Польши поставил родного брата и в тех реальных условиях, это был гуманный подход. Хотелки свои поляки пусть засунут в зад. Им можно ликвидировать свою безграмотность и почитать как геноцидили некоторых, в том числе их соседи фашики. Польша русскую государственность пыталась уничтожить неоднократно, правда очень ранее и только стойкость Гермогена и ополчение к этому не привели. Поляки что туристами в Кремле 2 года сидели и людоедством занимались, пытаясь Владислава поставить на престол? Вернувшись в современность хочу сказать, что после 1939 года когда СССР опять таки вернула свое, добрый товарищ Сталин нарезал полякам более трети нынешней территории из германских земель, причем СССР вытянув тяжелейшую войну забрал себе треть Восточной Пруссии, а остальное по доброте отвалил этим лузерам так же как границу соорудил по Одеру и Нейсе. Более неблагодарной и более скандальной нации нет, и все разделы и исторические пиз...лины у них еще впереди поверьте. Про болгар вообще молчу и говорить не хочу. Царь батюшка А Второй лучше бы отправил на Дальний Восток 130000 здоровых мужиков которые погибли за этих мудаков да дал бы туркам порезвиться еще там. @@Jackie-in1em

@@Jackie-in1em Оккупация Польши говоришь. Значит полное ОСВОБОЖДЕНИЕ страны, которая готовилась напасть вместе со своим союзничком Адольфом Алоизычем. Подаренные Польше промышленные западные и северные земли, с таким выходом к морю, какого у них НИКОГДА не было, гибель 600 тыс. советских солдат, за этих мразей, которые этого не стоили, полное восстановление страны, членство в ООН- это "оккупация" . А полное разрушение, уничтожение государственности и зверское уничтожение 6 млн. жителей страны Германией, причем не 150 лет назад, а только что - это, надо полагать "освобождение" и вхождение в "свободный мир" ;)) Что касается исторических "терок", то это Польша еще в 11 веке, при Болеславе Храбром захватывала столицу Руси - Киев и занимала Червенские города- Червонную Русь. Правда из Киева их быстро выперли, да и Червонную Русь освободили. Но и потом, после монголо-татарского нашествия, огромное количестводревнерусских земель, вошедших сначало в Великое княжество Литовское, прикарманили. Да и потом, во время великой Смуты на Руси, Москву захватили и государственности чуть не лишили. А то что не шмогли, то это не их "заслуга", а героизм РУССКОГО НАРОДА. Ну а когда пришла к полякам ответка, лет этак через 150 ( срок, как ты говоришь небольшой), в 18-м веке при Екатерине Великой, РОССИЙСКАЯ ИМПЕРИЯ вернула СВОИ ЗЕМЛИ - теперешние Белоруссия и Правобережная Украина, а вот коренные ПОЛЬСКИЕ земли захватила Пруссия и немного Австрия. Австрии еще и Червонная Русь перепала. Вот ТОГДА, а не в 19 веке Польши НЕ СТАЛО. Земли эти пруссаки назвали Новая Восточная Пруссия и Южная Пруссия. А поляки против пруссаков, что то не восставали. Наверное понимали, что пруссаки это тебе не РУСАКИ, живо под корень вырежут. Ну тут пришел Бонапартий со своей Гран Арме и поляки радостно, впереди поросячьего визга, поперли на "москалей". Но не срослось, для Бонапартия дело кончилось сначало Березиной, потом взятием Парижа и в конце о-вом Святой Елены. И тут "отсталая" РОССИЯ, получив центральную Польшу в 19 ВЕКЕ, образовывает Царство Польское. Дарует ей Конституцию, почти нигде в европе этого НЕ БЫЛО. Польша получает свой парламент Сейм и даже собственные внутренние войска. Хороша "оккупация"! Кстати западные и северные польские земли, доставшиеся Пруссии получили ...хрен моржовый ;)) Ну, "гордые" поляки этого стерпеть не могли и два раза восставали, конечно не против Пруссии, а против РОССИИ, вырезав при этом русский гарнизон. Ну их, конечно, после этого по головке не погладили, но Царство Польское ... СОХРАНИЛИ! От же "клятые москали;)) Вот такая история. А про болгарских "братушек-проститушек" и говорить нечего. РОССИЯ спасла их от полного отуречивания, освободила от плена и создала государство. За это обязательно нужно "отблагодарить", аж ТРИ РАЗА. Сначала ДВА РАЗА воевать против нее в 2-х МИРОВЫХ ВОЙНАХ. Получить полное прощение и огромную помощь. Ну, а потом когда РОССИИ было плохо, предали и в ТРЕТИЙ РАЗ, мигом побежали в нато, а теперь поддерживавают бандеро-нацистов!

Ich kannte Schwule in der DDR vor 50 Jahren persönlich. So pervers und fanatisch wie diese selbtsernannten woken, asozialenen, im besten Sinne des Wortes, neuen faschistoiden Fanatiker waren die nicht. Und so wie ich denken viele Schwule und Lesben auch heute. Die o.Genannten werden schlimmer als die Juden von den vermeintlich ach so guten ,toleranten beschimpft in den (un) sozialen Netzwerken, wenn sie sich gegen den woken Faschismus ö f f e nt l i c h äussern . Diese Schwulen u. Lesben wollen nur in einer toleranten Gesellschaft friedlich unter uns leben und niemanden u m e r z i e h e n - das ist der Punkt.

Ich war als Offiziersschüler 2 Studienjahr der Volksmarine dabei. 6 Wochen Übung auf dem Flugfeld in Schönefeld gingen dem Ganzen voraus.

I remember this day - October 7th, 1984. It was my 15th birthday. We (my family) lived in Chicago. We went to celebrate at my Aunt and Uncle's Lake Shore Drive apartment. We watched the Reagan-Mondale debate. My uncle was quiet and sulking because his Cubs had just been finished off by the Padres in the final game of the NLCS. None of this has anything to do with the content of the video, except for how strange it is that these completely different worlds are linked by the same day.

i was there in 84, 5 and 6.. i remember it was illegal to film the parade. Such a shame and though i still have a couple of pictures, i havent seen this in decades. its hard to put into words for people hearing the stories... Thanks for finding this for us.

Illegal? I've never heard of that before. I spoke to a few NATO soldiers who attended this parade, and they said they took photos. There's even a former American soldier who uploaded his own home footage he took of the 1988 parade. How did you manage to attend these parades?

@@MaximusandHistory my father was a MAC airman. I actually got to to live at tempelhof in the barracks with him during the summer. I was 8yo in 84.. Our window was just outside the golf ball. I stayed summers of 84, 5 and 6. we would go to the ddr most weekends and my father spoke Russian and German so he knew several of the soldiers and would always try to trade uniform peices. we had a video camcorder and a nice nikon, but dad said it was illegal to take video of the parade. we have pictures, but he said he was too chicken to video it because he stood out badly with his uniform and big bus driver hat. for whatever reason, they already followed him around enough and he didnt need the trouble.

Das war noch eine ARMEE mit Drill und Disziplin. Auch funktionierte höchstwarscheinlich alles an EQUIPMENT....Ich teile nicht das POLITISCHE SYSTEM aber das Miltär hatte den Respekt den es verdiente .

(Wir waren vor der WV beauftragt die Wehrstrukturen zu erfassen - eines meiner schönsten Erlebnisse während meiner Diesntzeit).

Ich hatte das Glück auch 1 Parade mitzufahren. Das war 1970.Wir hatten einen Ural und hintendran eine 100 millimeter Pack. Und waren inn einem alten Schlachthof untergebracht.Es war ein Eisenbahn Transport von Eggesin.

@@shootergamerplay1905 Das Volk ist qua Definition Deutsch. Dass dort alle einheitlicher aussahen, war Teil der Massenideologie und der Isolation. Ansonsten wurde darauf geachtet, dass sich die nicht so konformen Elemente nicht zu oft begegneten. Tatsächlich gab es auch in der DDR Afrikaner, Asiaten und Lateinamerikaner und auch Alt- und Neunazis. Erstere wurden nach der Revolution nur häufig ausgewiesen oder von letzteren verhauen und totgeschlagen um die vermeintliche Reinheit der Dummheit wiederherzustellen.

All the leaders of the DDR were really old. Honecker was 71 years old, his inner circle was all 70+ years old, the whole central committee of the party was on average 62. For comparison, the German cabinet of ministers in 2021 was on average 50 years old

Always interesting to watch DDR military parades. There is the traditional opening of all Russian and East European military parades with the two generals in the two open cars changing the guard and reviewing the troops. Would love to get my hands on one of those convertibles!

Полностью с вами согласен! Современные ФГРшники не идут вообще ни в какое сравнение с Солдатами ГДР по выправке, по грациозности, да и в общем серьезности проведения парадов! Посмотреть, как маршируют бундесверовцы; вяло, как полудохлые сопли. А гэдэровцы, ровно, в ногу, чеканя каждый шаг! Глаз радуется! В ГДР была отличная армия, я, служил в ГСВГ в Кётене, 71 -- 73г. К нам приезжали ребята, учиться на авиамехаников, очень хорошие ребята.

In terms of militaristic fascist history, yes. We already laughed about these clowns at that time. The only way they could keep things together was by brutal force. Nothing was attractive. People were fleeing the country during its whole time of existence in huge numbers. When it was finally over, it was almost too late. History repeats now even worse further to the East: Brutality, stupidity in leadership and finally only ruins. I feel sorry for the ones who tried to built up some joy and humanity in those systems and failed due to the narrow circumstances.

@@florianmeier3186 the German uniform was a Prussian style uniform. You can not blame the uniform because of some nutcase from Austria and his moronic henchmen. A lot of eastern European armies have similar styled uniforms and they goose step as well.

So glad that Yasser Arafat of the PLO was there to watch that parade.There were diplomats from countries such as India, North Korea, Mongolia, Poland and Ethiopia.

Very nice footage. American, but am interested in old footage from former Eastern Block countries. This was East Germany Secretary of Defense Hoffman's second to last parade appearance before his death in '85'.

This is off topic but I was in South Korea few months ago and I happened to stop by a military merch shop in Seoul that had hundreds of these original East German helmets and uniforms for sale. I asked the owner how he got so many of them and he told me that he got it from Poland. I managed to buy a few that were in good conditions and brought them over to Canada.

you can still buy east german military,here in the u,s,a we have military surplus stores and now online stores,sportsmans guide/hq surplus has helmets,border guard and officers hats,russian soviet stuff,i love the ushanka hats,i got a communist hungarian ushanka with the badge,they everything including all other countries excess military and in some cases ww1 and ww2 original gear from both sides of the war,i like stores like this because when you buy something your buying a piece of history,thats why i love stores like this,soon you will not be able to purchase this stuff especially east german or anything from any of the satellite soviet and communist states,as the years move forward this memorabilia will increase in value and historical meaning and wealth,what you bought that hat for at 5 dollars in 20 years be worth 2500 dollars or more,i have ww2 german aemy helmets i bought as a kid for like 10 or 20 bucks at tag sales now they are worth 2000 dollars or more,i been made crazy offers but ime not selling them.

Its amazing how much everything has changed since then including the way how we saw the world for what it was.

Very interesting to see how East and West blended the styles of their respective spheres. West Germany with their M1 helmets and American style parade and the East with their Soviet parade yet still preserving a lot of their traditions.

@@russia8526 it was alright; good welfare and pretty much guaranteed employment; you even had universal daycare for all families. High end consumer electronics and specific grocery items were harder to come by though.

Although it is difficult to buy high-end electronic products, if East Germany is able to open up its economy, it should not be difficult for East German civilians to buy other electronic products from other countries or West Germany.

@@russia8526 Opening up the economy would have opened up a whole new can of worms; if they weren't extremely careful over what was imported local industry could be completely overwhelmed in certain areas.

I have served eight years in the United States Army. Two tours in Germany during The Cold War: 1974 to 1975, and 1979 to 1981. And I'm amazed to even remember how to understand German more than I can speak it.

East German Puppet State of the USSR. Hardliner Communist Bolshevik Marxist Government of oppression, tyranny and terrorism. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev helped to bring down the Berlin Wall and reunification of the German people finally in 1989 after World War II had ended way back in 1945. If Roosevelt hadn't died the Cold War wouldn't have happened. Russia would have been forced to end their occupation of East Germany like the other Allied Forces of Britain, France and the U.S.A. had already done. NATO was formed to protect Europe from Communist aggression and Russia bullying all European Nations. Putin is doing exactly the same thing that Stalin was attempting to do. Conquer Europe and force Communist Bolshevik Authoritarianism on all of Europe. Putin didn't expect such tough resistance from his invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine has sent him a message you will not force us back into Communism under the Iron Curtain and back into the fallen USSR. We are now Independent sovereign Nations. NATO is also expanding its members with Finland, Sweden and next Ukraine. Freedom will prevail and win out. Putin will be defeated and run into exile soon.

From the stories of my parents I do know that they visited the GDR regularly. And they 'enjoyed' any kind of public happening where the national anthem was played. They perceived it as a kind of weird and funny cinema. As I come from West-Germany of course they sang the text to the anthem loud and clear which was forbidden in the GDR. 😂

Обратил внимание, что в Армии ГДР, противотанковые части именовались "панцерягер", а не "панцерабвер..." (то есть, использовалось название принятое в Вермахте где-то в середине Великой Отечественной, до этого противотанковые пушки назывались "панцерабверканоне". Вообще, действительно - как ни странно, но в Армии ГДР осталось гораздо больше от Вермахта и Рейхсвера, нежели чем в Бундесвере, форма, строевая традиция прусская. Звания были унифицированы во всем ОВД по советскому образцу, хотя вроде в Народной Армии в категории "прапорщики" было аж четыре звания, уже не помню. Хорошая была армия у ГДР, в ОВД из союзников СССР - лучшая.

А ФРГ сохранило самое тупое из прошлого, но кастрированное и скопировала самое тупое у НАТО. Вышел недорейх Аденаура, за который сейчас смешно.

Fantastic, thank you for uploading this gem! Are you going to upload more DDR-parade footage in the near future? In future, if it is possible, it would be nice if you didn't edit the footage so much, so the marches would play uninterrupted for a longer time. Especially the parts where the military bands are shown are interesting, and for many viewers the music and the military band is an important factor that makes these parades interesting. Anyway, thank you for sharing these historical footages with us !

Yes, I would love to upload more footage, but it's very expensive. I have 2 minutes of the 1976 Parade, 1 minute of the 1980 parade, etc. this will probably be used in an educational video about the NVA's traditions. Unfortunately I did not edit any of the footage aside from my watermark's. The footage you see is the footage I got! :/ The parade is definitely longer than 20 minutes, the same with all the other footage on my channel, all of them were already cut. If I would purchase the footage directly from the archives, completely unedited, for the full 60+ minutes of these parades, I'd be spending at least $ 3,000-5,000 USD just for one parade!!

I was lucky enough to see the 1985 parade in Berlin Ost, I spent many happy days in the DDR watching the Russians and East Germans. I do not think my Army came anywhere close to this precision and smartness, to see it was amazing and I will never forget that day. The best of German Army drill and discipline in the NVA.

Communism via Deutsche; but only a show of specific detail. People castrated by the impetus of an utilitarian Philosophy added with the vigor of a Gaulish people who had mechanized their way to global infamy. This is heartbreaking to see. Nuremburg executions would be more dignified.

Yes, nice to visit, but much better to leave again. This whole militaristic shit was so crude remembering the tireness of war within the people, the fact that in worst case families would have killed their relatives and that this "country" had a glancing army, but almost nothing else to comfort its people. And in the end the biggest achievement of this army was to support the brutal suppression of reforms in the CSSR - at least without weapons. The major task was to fight civil movements.

Ich war bei Felix in Lichtenberg

My father was a Soviet CCCP attache in die DDR. He thought in 4-5 years, the Russians would give it back to the people. They did not know they were going to stay there for a long time. My dad eventually immigrated to the US in 1988 shortly before the colllapse of communism in the Soviet Union and the rest of Eastern Europe-Die DDR. He interviewed countless East German officers, met with top people like Ulbricht, Hornecker, and Melike, and even regular everyday soldiers. He did mention that the DDR lept the Prussian traditions. The West German BDR Army resembled what you saw in the US armed forces. I am surprised at the good quality of this video.

The West German Army was Americanized, their uniforms looked similar to that of the US Army. Only in Die DDR Duetsche Democratize Republik did you find the Prussian traditions alive and well, in their army. Trust me brat I know my "East German" history spasobo zaradzvitti pryivet kak dela karasho russie but in transliteration not Cyrillic.

I was in my last year in school at that time and probably watched this parade on TV. In the part of of West Germany where I lived (close to Hanover) we could watch DDR-TV -- however only in black and white mode due to different broadcasting systems.

@@mfcgmfcg Sure. We could watch every TV channel, listen to every Radio program and read any newspaper. In some special newspaper shops you could buy the Prawda, just across the Times, Washington Post, many other newspaper from around the world. Watching TV and listening to Radio was just limited by technical capabilities.
