The Cadillac Seville is a luxury-type car that was manufactured by the Cadillac division of American automaker General Motors from 1975 to 2004, as a smaller-sized top-of-the-line Cadillac. The name of "Cadillac's first small car" was selected over a revival of LaSalle and the GM design staff's preference, LaScala, primarily because, notes GM Marketing Director Gordon Horsburgh, "It had no negatives. 1979 was the last year for this body style.

    Its graceful proportions were dictated by the fact that it was a stretched Nova, with the wheels far forward to support the big-block engines that were offered in earlier Novas and Camaros. Most of GM's B and C bodies had the front wheels pulled further in, though the Deville and Fleetwood had them a little further forward than the 98 and Electra. Lighter engines, radial tires and power steering have allowed car makers to pull the front wheels back into the firewall to save space and reduce weight, but that makes modern cars look stubby and bland.

    General Motors agreed with you. That's why instead of mothballing the first generation Seville's styling in 1980, when they introduced the second gen bustleback Seville, GM reapplied tweaked versions of the Seville's basic look to the Olds Cutlass and Buick Regal 4 doors. : ) Their styling was remarkably similar, and clearly Seville inspired.

    Simple, clean & very classy. More so than even the big Caddys of the day whether the last of the old generation or the newer "downsized" version. 40 yrs may have given us a lot of new technology but it certainly hasn't given us anything that exudes class the way this one does!

    I doubt it. Tripmaster (like BMW E23 & E28) was really technological thing, monoport fuel injection (like later TBI), air cushion (invented in '74), what else ? It was at all japanese and european flagmans. In other aspects, Seville is 2nd Chevy Nova with lightly modified chassis and luxurious body.

    I'm not a fan of the current Cadillac extreme styling. It's appears to be inspired by the Transformer movies. It's angry, not luxurious. It's not aspirational. A major turn off.

    King Rose Archives I don't know if there's any luxury car that has a "classy" look anymore. Yeah, we all know they're expensive and they're edgy, but they don't have a formal, luxurious look, they all look sporty. The only ones that come close would be the really expensive ones like the Bentley Mulsanne and Rolls Royces, though I find Rollers to be kind of grotesque.

    New cars aren’t good looking or even all that reliable. Especially the luxury makes chock full of electronic sensors and gizmos. You don’t want to be around when all that stuff begins to fail and throw codes at you. I too wish true luxury would return. As another mentioned, Bentley Mulsanne or Rolls-Royce are about the only ones doing it.

    The original Seville design was way ahead of its time. It was a really good prediction of what GM's B-bodies and C-bodies would look like through the next decade (and a little beyond with the RWD Brougham until 1992). This is still a very handsome car. Not many cars from 1976 still look this good today. The first generation Seville was underappreciated in its time.

    I remember a friend of my parents had one of these...it was that rosewood with a leather interior in was beautiful....they should make this today....its a timeless design and looks better than most other cars being made now

    Back then Cadillac still had brand name recognition and there were plenty of people who were Cadillac enthusiast alive. Now with all the competition from foreign automakers and fewer people who thought of Cadillac as the namesake it was, I doubt there's enough people they could attract as new buyers. But I do agree, it was a great design and sales numbers of these first body style years 1975 1/2-1979 proved it.

    I spent a fortune restoring a Rusty 76. Always loved looking at it and driving it. Nothing but trouble with it. Spent way more time fixing it than driving it. Under engineered everything, but it sure looked great and drove great on the rare occasion that I could actually show it off and drive it. Spent many a frustrating hour chasing gremlins in the primitive fuel injection. Finally gave up and threw a carburetor on it. All the wiring was brittle and cheap. The armrests would fall off when you closed the door, etc etc etc, but she sure was beautiful.

    The interior quality of my 79 Seville was pitiful after a few years left outside, like most 70s/80s cars. My 66 Cadillac was far superior in interior quality, plus a full frame and coil rear springs. Seville was a beautiful build an a 75-79 Nova platform.

    Amazing how the Nova and the Seville are basically twin cars, both built on the same chassis. Nova became the cab, while the Seville was the cab company owner's personal ride. Put them side by side and you can see the basic design is the same on both. Simply astounding.

    One thing that always amazed me as i have a seville is how the car can go over really rough bumpy patches in the road and you barely feel the bumps sometimes dont feel them at all i havent even been in a modern car that does this

    i own a seville and it drives nice on bumpy road , but a more "modern" car thats even better is every citroën with hydrolic shock absorbers doesnt matter how ruff the road is you dont feel anything ;-) and you dont need a jack to change your back wheels you can even drive home with 3 :P

    the softer the ride the worst the handling ,specially on the corners,so it is trade off,modern car handle the road a lot better than 70's car but not as smooth ,

    I had one of these cant remember the exact year but it was a really nice car until it quit running. I have always worked on my own cars but the Seville had me stumped for a while with a fuel problem. I could hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank running so of course, I changed the fuel filter thinking that it was clogged up and must be the problem. It wasn't. I was crawling around underneath the car and by sheer luck, I found another fuel pump on the frame rail. I had my wife turn on the key so I could see if that pump would run and it didn't. Out of frustration, I hit the pump with the side of my hand and it started working and has worked ever since. Near as I can figure something was stuck in it and came lose when I hit it.

    The suspensions in these delivered an incredible ride for such a small car in those days. They looked like a leaner Rolls Royce. Very dependable and beautiful cars.

    When this model design was produced, I was working at a Mobil service station. We had a couple customers that drove this model and would bring them in for oil changes. I liked them, but found them cramped over the full size Caddies. Nowadays, that car would be a full sized model. Still, its design is classy and exudes a certain level of prestige.

    The non-diesel version of the Seville was a superb GM creation and it was very popular. I test drove one when it came out and it was amazing. Everything that people didn't like about Cadillac was gone. Wonderful styling, ride, handling, fit and finish. The diesel was a disaster like it was in the Oldsmobiles. The 350 hated being made into a diesel. I want a '77-'79 Seville and a Chevy Volt as my retirement cars.

    Well, we've got a Buick/Cadillac dealership in my town that has been in business as the only one (now has Chevy and GMC) for over 75 years and the parts guy looked it up for me and he says, no, they are not the same parts and in fact the suspension has additional ride control components and fitting for auto-level control which of course Nova didn't have. Whatev.

    BrokebackBob Unlike you, I don't have to check with a dealership to see leaf springs under the rear of a 76 Seville. No other Cadillac had leaf springs. The 76 Nova had leaf springs and the same wheel base as the Seville. I just looked up rear leaf spring shackle for both the 76 Seville and the 76 Nova and they both have the same part #.

    @@mr.butterworth4216 But they were junk unless they had the famous Small-Block Chevy. Other than that, Cadillac lost their style and quality after 79. However, the cadillac sedan seville are one of the best looking Cadillacs, but only the four-door cars.

    Seville was the Vsport that cadillac is hopelessly trying to make today ,furthermore seville was built from the right collection of off the shelf parts, nova chassis, ws6 suspension from a trans am, and the 350 olds engine from the cutlass,that car had everything the new cars can,t mimic today.

    My '79, was brand new, regular 1, the OLDSMOBILE 350CID F.I. combined with that super low numerical axle ratio was slow to reach hi-way speeds, but, the 4 wheel disc brakes were phenomenal for the time. Overall a nice SMALL (inside ) CADDY. I got the ASTROROOF, genuine wire wheels,& Uniroyals wide white walls. What a PAIN TO GET THE WIRE WHEELS CLEAN. But, worth it! I can imagine this very car with today's technology. $$$$ But, AWESOME for certain. Naturally aspirated ohv V8, 10sp-auto, awd,....I'll take it (again).

    My mom had one of these with spoke rims. She traded it for a 80 or 81 humpback Seville hated it and gave it to me as my first car at 15 years old. I do own a newer body style of the STS but this body style is still awesome.

    I had a Green over Green over Green 76. Sold it with about 117,000 miles and it was still as solid of a driving and handling car as I have ever owned.

    Since it's based on the Nova, you can also say it's based on the Camaro, from which this Nova platform was derived. Being a first generation Camaro owner, I can see the family ties immediately during the chassis discussion. It's obviously been tweaked dimensionally, and better bushings and subframe mounts, along with generous soundproofing used. It would not surprise me if this car also has the 'cocktail shakers' from the Camaro convertible mounted in it as well. These helped dampen body shake, and were mounted in the corners of the car. Nice car, and a nice one to drive today, if you can find a relatively rust free gas powered one. A big block Chevy should drop right in if you want more serious power than the emissions choked Olds 350 can deliver.

    novaseline4u hey I saw the same thing with the frame structure because I own both 80 and an 81 pace car trans ams but I disagree about dropping in a bbc I'd just replace the olds 350 with a 68-70 olds 350 or 455, a much easier swap and much more "interesting build" if you will.

    Growing up, I often mistook Cadillac Seville, downsized el Dorados with gm a bodies (1978-1988). The cars have similar styling and proportions, but different underneath. I think el dorados, were always front wheel drive, and probably unibody like seville. El Dorados on the Riviera snaking on toronados with his buddies el camino, count monte carlo, as the high cutlass Sierra winds flow through the hairs of senior cordoba😁 The Seville introduced in 1975 started the "boxy" styling of cars that would continue into the 1980s.

    my dad bought one of these the first year it arrived in 76. i remember going on a school trip and when we had to do a pit stop all my school friends came over and everyone was all over that car. i was embarassed indeed. it was $16,500. an unHEARD of amount to spend on a new car back then lol

    Dual illuminated center storage consoles, tilt telescoping wheel, auto door lock when in gear, Really all it's missing is keyless entry to make it daily driver 40 years later.

    This WAS true lURUXY back in the days our round the street neighbor had a 79 clay gray Seville fully loaded to the maxx with CB radio every few years they get a Cadillac or a lincoln I'm a big fan of Cadillacs/ lincolns 4 ever lURUXY old/ New sckool

    I wish I could go test drive one. I was very surprised at the "telephone installation" option they mentioned; I didn't think mobile phones were available until the 1980's.

    Mobile Phone Service (MPS) was available since 1946! (You will see "car phones" used in some 1950s movies and TV shows Esp. "private eye" shows like "Peter Gunn") it used a simple "duplex" radio system that severely limited the number of calls that the system could handle at any given time. (in some cities you could wait a half hour to "get" a "line"!) The first analog cellular radio telephone concept was tested in 1973. Ma Bell called the new system AMPS for ADVANCED Mobile Phone Service. It would take until 1983 for AMPS to be available to the public. (This is the early Cellular service MOST people remember as "car phones") There were later totally mobile units ("bag phones"/"brick" phones) Advancements in the 90s led to D-AMPS ( DIGITAL-Advanced Mobile Phone Service) then quickly PCS (Personal Communication Service) came along (allowing for more than just voice communication). This was the second generation of digital mobile phones, and is the "root" of modern mobile phones. This also where all the "G"s came from (3G,4G) 5G (the latest) is the fifth generation of digital phone technology.

    @James Slick I recall seeing a 1970’s movie where some guys in the back of a limousine were using a corded car phone. Must have been the AMPS technology at that time, but then you said that actual cell service wasn’t available to the public until ‘83. I recall the bag phones. I worked with a man who had one, and we all felt pretty cool if we got to use it riding in the car, and this was about ‘93.

    @@mr.butterworth4216 In the 70s, it would have been the old original regular MPS (1946 tech!), AMPS was developed in 73, but not "rolled out" for a decade.

    The 1975-1979 Cadillac Sevilles were Better Looking than the Homely 1980-1985 Sevilles! Then Order Was Restored With The 1986 To Newer Sevilles! 😍❤👍

    I look at these retro videos of this car and one thing I can tell you, for a car that actually started out as an experiment became instant classic, built from a collection of parts , the chassis from a chevy nova suspension differential and steering from a firebird and the 350 olds from a cutlass supreme. i just don,t see how this car could be any better than it was, this car is still ahead of it,s time, the one thing the new guys in the business will never understand, you can,t top perfection.

    @Raymond Haley The Seville was far more than a collection of off the shelf parts, Cadillac re-engineered a lot of it to the extent that many of the components were unique to the Seville. Including but, not limited to the new K-body chassis itself.
