1978 Ludwig Speed King, Part 1B: Putting it all back together!

What a journey this pedal has been. I've put an inordinate amount of time into this thing trying to give it the best possible chance of a full recovery; I think that I've managed to pull it off. This video goes into a huge amount of detail as to how I repaired everything - there is lots of talking and explaining. Let me know in he comments if you find the explanations helpful/interesting, or if you think that the excessive talking takes away from the video rather than helping add to it.
Thanks for watching! Final episode will be done soon, and released on Christmas Day 2022!

Thanks for the video. I’m not wanting to express any opinions, unless it’s only to help you provide what I think might be a better video product. I don’t want to be a drag. Everyone is different and makes a different kind of video. Again… thanks for the video.

Constructive criticism is always welcomed. This video isn't going to be a popular one, I already know that. It was way too chatty, even for me...but I ran into some roadblocks during filming that I wasn't expecting (technical stuff mostly). I had to improvise on the fly, so I ended up doing the overhead shots in lieu of splicing in some of the other footage I had (that was borderline unusable). Thanks anyway for watching. I welcome your feedback - it's the only way I can get better at any of this stuff.

@@AllThingsMech Understood. I’d like to see the inside and hardware of the rest of the kit, personally. A lot of guys go through restoration and such, far too fast, so there’s got to be a middle ground. Also… Often text just where it’s needed that’s up long enough to fully read in a relaxed manor is chill, too. On a final note for this conversation, getting rid of any cymbals that are cheap is better than having a lot of them. It can make or break your kit. You can make almost any drum sound pretty good with some work, but bad cymbals… … nope. I took my time and shopped around slowly after buying some expensive New Zildjian K sweet cymbals in a bundle, and found some vintage here and there for pretty good prices with a little patience. Wish I had waited before I bought the new ones… but they’re good to have. Good investment, if nothing else. But certainly educate yourself on cymbals before looking. Don’t go out and get a bunch of too heavy, too loud, well made 80s cymbals cuz they’re cheap. Ha ha! Those were for metal and hair bands of another time. 😂 See… now I’ve gone on too long. If you like to fix things, drums are a good choice, because there are so many out there in need of restoration… and people Love restoration videos… but they are generally not the machinist types. They’re Artists, so you’ve chosen a fine line to walk on. Good luck! Oh! Thanks for the video!!

@BadChizzle all good suggestions. Keep in mind though, the series isn't done yet. I have one more video coming out that will detail things a touch more - maybe not quite as in depth as what some folks want, but it will show the insides of the shells, breaking down the toms and cleaning them up, repairing the wraps, etc. I'm hesitant to show a whole lot of playing for a couple reasons; 1) I have no drum mics, nor am I an audio guru...its very hard to record a decent sound from these drums using the minimalistic equipment I have, and 2), quite frankly, I've lost a lot of the skill I had back when I was younger. I'm not a very good drummer anymore! I'm self taught, so I need a lot more practice time to get back into it. It will come back to me but right now I'm pretty rusty. As to the cymbals, again, this is the kit I got when I was 12. I bought the ZBTs as starters because they were all I could afford (and I just didnt know any better), and they really are crap. I added nicer ones as I could to try and balance out the sound and add some fun elements; the ride is a 20" ghost logo Zildjian made around the same time as the drums ('78-'79 I believe), and the two smaller ones are an A-custom splash and an Oriental trash-splash. The value of good cymbals isn't lost on me, I assure you. I will be ditching the ZBTs as time and funds allow. I thank you again for watching, and sincerely appreciate you taking the time to make suggestions in a polite and meaningful way. I will take them to heart and do what I can! Thanks again!
