1978 Dodge Sportsman RV Camper Van Revival - Sitting over 2 Decades!

In this episode of Torque Alley Garage, I take this musty, vintage 1978 Dodge Sportsman RV Camper and try to perform a redneck revival in the hopes that another Mopar comes back to life. Sitting 20+ years, I fight off a nest of wasps, Jimmy attempts to poop inside and i have to ask myself 1) why do I do this? And 2) Will it run & drive? 3) Will I sell my house and park it down by the river? Check out the longest episode so far.

My grandfather had pretty the same van except it was white and had big burgundy stripes over the hood and down both sides all the way to the back, and in big letters said "Trans Van" (I believe in your case the wheel base wasn't changed because it was the same as my grandpa's) Trans Van must have been ordered with a little different layout but still had the huge side windows. He started taking me in the woods hunting when I was 5yrs old up until I was 9yrs old when he passed, I'm 42 now. I thank him every day for teaching me how to be a man, have respect, handle firearms, those couple years we spent together was the best memories in my entire life, I thank God every day for putting that man in my life when I needed guidance, damn sure miss the guy❤

The RV is back home with a friend of mine, he is on the fence about van life or keeping it as a weekend camper. The Cutlass will have a new transmission this year and front suspension, it needs to be back out on the road! Thanks for watching!

I dont think someone shortened it. I had an uncle with one similar thing he bought brand new. That's why the door is on the back and not the side. Great find. 👍

Might have to try and track down the prior owners if they are still around here, it’s definitely unique! I always thought they had a dual rear end instead of single wheel, but I’m not a “van man” as much as I’d like to know. Thanks for watching!

All of your Chrysler small blocks have the engine size written on the side of the block...passenger side. On Chrysler B block big blocks you can find the engine size on a flat embossment in front of the drivers side head, The RB big blocks will have an embossment in front of the intake manifold near the distributor. The fuel pumps can be removed using a short 3/8 drive extension, and a short socket using a ratchet. The easiest way to identify the 360 from the 318 if they have 2 barrel carburetors is that the 360 has the larger of the two, the 318 2 barrel looks like a 1 barrel. One thing to note about a 360 is that it is an interference engine, and like many other manufacturers they had nylon timing gears from the factory which were only good for 60,000 miles. Great video, thank you for sharing. If ever you decide to tear down a Chrysler engine, look closely at the webbing for the mains, and the size of the main bolts, they are much beefier that the other manufacturers.

Hey man, Diehard Dodge guy here. Easy reference - Small block engines - 318, 340, 360 - have the distributors on the back of the engine, whereas the big blocks - 383, 400 and 440 - have the distributor on the front pointing at an angle. Now, for the normal pickups etc 440s went away in 78, but the RVs hung onto the big blocks a lil longer, 79-80 ish. Your example is a small block, either 318 or 360. 11:46 thats just to fill the engine oil. 13:01 Welp this is why i live where the air hurts my face 7 months a year. Fuck wasps. 14:40 Motorhomes have always been cool to me. Bein able to live wherever you want? Metallica had it right before they went to shit: "Wherever I may Roam" 16:40 Bloody hell, is that the set where the filmed "The Day After"? 18:00 dodges do NOT crank fast to begin with, they sound like a turbine engine winding up. Moreover, your battery leads arent great. 19:39 Care to try pullin wrench at -40? 22:40 - that unit is electronic ignition. The brain box to it is directly behind the battery; the distributor is a mag pickup type. 24:52 AHH YEAA THATS WHAT I LIKE HEARING 27:00 fuel filter will be near the fuel pump OR along the frame. 27:27 Good Kitty 30:00 Small block fuel pumps ride on an eccentric lobe on the camshaft. BIG Block pumps have an intermediate rod that goes from the same came lobe to the fuel pump and are a real pain to keep up while stuffing a pump in. 31:27 - socket, 1"short extention, stubby 3/8" ratchet. Use them to zip the bolts out n in, use a long ratchet to do final torque. Use flex heads/flex extentions if needed. 43:30 - the rattle are the hydraulic valve lifters - she desperately needs an oil change. May want to consider diesel engine oil; i run that in my old mopars now. Stay the fuck away from fram garbage - get Wix or better. 46:30 a delight to see the old gal move! If you find the RV side isnt save-able, you might like what i did with my unit.

I’m pretty sure your camper van came new as a dually. Look up late 70s early 80s Dodge trans van to see what they look like. I just got an 81 that I’m remodeling. For me, the size is perfect for one or two people , not too big and not too small. Good luck with yours.

Here around the 37:30 mark when you retired for the day, I was left wondering about your proclivity to use Cresent Wrenches. Now I did once hear the phrase "Never rub another man's rhubarb", but even so, does your heritage go back to the venerable paleolithic "Clan of the Round Nuts"? Maybe folks just call you "Nuts", as a reminder? By the way, I'm subbing in hopes you find what you were meant to restore, a short bus.🤣

When I was a young fella starting off in a truck shop, we had a few phrases we tossed around. “If you wanted it round, I’m already one step ahead of you.” My personal favorite was, “Crank it til you snap it off, then just back it off a half-turn.” Appreciate the sub, I’ve got another Mopar sitting on-deck that I will be getting to with better weather!

Originally, all of the R VS came with a 440! Unless you wanted a V6. But the 440 was phased out on all Dodge vehicles in 1978, so if this is a 78 , you would have the low end. HP440 f looking at your hands next to the passenger side valve cover, it is too narrow to be a.440. That will be a .360. The .318's though the workhorse for dodge, wouldn't be equiped with this RV because of the weight and it has a 1 ton under carrage.
