Ойын-сауық

Bernard Clark reports on the British "Hot Rod" drag racing scene. A meeting was held yesterday at the Santa Pod racetrack in Bedfordshire, in front of thousands of eager spectators.
Bernard speaks to Bob Phelps, the owner of the Santa Pod Raceway, and meets a couple of drivers who operate at different ends of the sport's financial scale - Roz Prior, who drives the impressive "Maneater" and Harry Corrigan, who races in a modified Austin Westminster.
This clip is from Nationwide, originally broadcast 19 September, 1977.

I went to Santa Pod during one of Englands hottest days ever. I think it was 84. There was a car named “Vanishing Point”. I also remember a Ford Pinto tearing up the track only because we owned two Pinto’s at the time.

I remember it too ,Vanishing point was a jet car and the announcer would say "blink and youll miss it" it was capable of getting to 100mph in 12ft.

My first car was a Mercedes Benz 200D/8 built in 1975. It accelerated from 0 to 100km/h in one and a half hours or 37 miles.

The late great Bob Phelps, I can remember those days and also once getting a lift back to London in his son Roy's Caddy when we hit the ton on the M1. Heck of a legacy?

This is the first time I've set eyes on the Gladiator Funny Car since the late 1970's! Alan Herrdige was a top driver in the day. Used to see other cars such as Dennis Priddle and his Monza funny car and the Houndog funny car. I was there when the Medicine Man slingshot top fuel dragster wheeleied and turned over completely, we even recorded it on cine film at the time. So many good memories; Dave Lee Travis in the Needle top fuel, and Roz Pryor. One of my all times faves was 'Als Gasser', a Ford Model-T V8 that was such a beautiful car. 🙂

Gladiator is still running, albeit in name only. The car is brand new and Jason Phelps (As in the son of Roy Phelps, the track owner in the film) drives it. Al's Gasser is still running too. Apart from that not a lot has changed.

LOL The reporter is a little bit like "What does a little, gentle, pretty woman like you in a big, dangerous, ugly car like that? Aren´t you afraid? You surely need some protection by a man!" ...and he was right! Because what does a little, gentle, pretty woman like her in a big, dangerous, ugly car like that?
