1977: KENNY DALGLISH signs for LIVERPOOL | Grandstand | Classic BBC sport | BBC Archive

Спорт

King Kevin is gone, long live King Kenny!
Liverpool FC have broken the British football transfer record by signing forward Kenny Dalglish for £440,000 from Glasgow Celtic. Dalglish has been bought using the money Liverpool received from Hamburg for Kevin Keegan, and despite the record fee manager Bob Paisley thinks it represents a good deal for the club.
Dalglish has met club captain Emlyn Hughes and his new teammates, who are preparing to face Liverpool's great rivals Manchester United in the Charity shield.
This clip is from Grandstand. Originally broadcast 13 August, 1977.

I always thought of Bob Paisley as a kindly Uncle figure and what a manager he was. He achieved incredible success and will be remembered for helping lay the foundation for the history of this club that we are so proud of today. Little did we realise how big a signing that King Kenny would become and I am glad to have watched this story unfold . YNWA

@@nigelhammond8516 Liverpool played Red Star Begrade and were played off the pitch about 1970. Immediately after the game the bootroom, where Bob was the leader, decided the English game would never bring European success, decided there and then to change playing style. We played Leeds at Elland Road and Revie was shocked at how easy Liverpool won. It was the passing game which achieved such success and was subsequently copied by Barcelona. Turning Ray Kennedy from centre fwd to an elegant midfielder. Signing Kenny, Sou etc etc etc. The guy was a true genius

I really like the way he answers the question about the level of the other Scottish teams. Of course the standard is better in England but every time one of those teams play against Celtic or Rangers it is a cup final to them and a real chance for one of those players to change their career’s or lives if they put on a show! Stuart Armstrong was a decent player at Dundee United and put in a few good performances in against Celtic, then got a massive move to Celtic and now plays in the premier league for Southampton. Just an example of the mentality the players have when playing against Celtic and Rangers.

Scottish Football was really good back in the day, Yes you had Rangers, Celtic, then that good Aberdeen team then you had Dundee United boo I hate to say plus Hearts and Hibs, anyway A Dee for Life!

@@grahamburke2939 Hearts had one good season in the 80's, they were mainly a yo-yo Club, as were Hibs. A lot of your 'smaller' teams had good sides in the 80's, the likes of St Mirren, Morton, Dumbarton, Dunfermline... The league was overall stronger in the 80's, no question of that, there was always 3, or 4 teams within touching distance of the title. Looking at 1982-83, when Dundee Utd won it, Celtic finished 2nd, one point behind them, and Aberdeen finished 3rd, level on points with Celtic. We'll never see a finish like that to the top flight in Scotland again.
