In January 1976 the W 114/115 series "Stroke Eight" models were replaced by a totally reconstructed type range with the internal designation W 123. The model family ranged from the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Diesel with 55 hp to the 2.8-liter 6-cylinder injection engine with 185 hp.
A technical novelty was the safety steering column, realised for the first time in series 123. Steering aggregate and steering column tube were linked together by a corrugated metal tube. In case of a crash, this corrugated metal tube could buckle to the side. This was a further step to reduce the danger of the column tube invading the interior of the car.
The various big round dual head lamps were a characteristic design of the new models. Next to the main head lamp, under a common lens, there was a smaller halogen fog lamp. Differing from that, the two top models of the series, Types 280 and 280 E, were provided with rectangular halogen wide-band head lamps. Externally both 2.8-liter models differed in three further points from their less powerful brothers. Type 280 as well as 280 E had a twin-scroll exhaust system - with twin end pipes, chromed air induction grill in front of the windscreen and an additional chrome strip under the rear lamps.
The range of engines was mostly taken over from the preceding models. The only exception was the Type 250, which was not provided with the old 2.8-liter aggregate M 130 any more, but with the newly constructed 2.5-liter 6-cylinder engine.

I'm the second owner of my beloved 1983 300D Turbo Diesel here in Northern California. It's my daily driver and has 387K miles on the clock and shows no sign of stopping. My job is to keep it nice for the next owner. I've done ALL the work on it over the 15+ years I've owned it and it's been worth every hour. The OM617A engine is the best power plant- ever! I truly love my (white w/ palomino) W123.133 !!!
Hallo W123-Fans! Ganz große Klasse erst mal, wie toll ihr eure Geschichte pflegt! Der W123 ist seinerzeit ein tolles Auto, wenn nicht eines der Besten gewesen. Auch ich bin, ab 1982 (geboren 1975) auf der Rückbank eines weizengelben W123 200, Bj. 80 aufgewachsen. Erinnere mich noch sehr gut. Dem hatten wir bis anno 1987, als er von einem rauchsilbernen 190E abgelöst wurde. Vor dem W123 hatten wir einen diamantsilbernen Audi 100 LS vom Typ 43. An diesem Typ Auto hängt bis heute mein Herz. Der Audi hatte irgendwas "faszinierendes". Warum, weiß ich nicht. Hab 1993 den Führerschein gemacht und bin seither IMMER Audi gefahren. Gleichwohl wissend, dass der Mercedes seinerzeit sicher das bessere ?... aber mit Sicherheit das stabilere Auto war. Heute, seit ein paar Tagen, bin ich wieder Besitzer eines Audi 100 CD 5S aus Bj. 82. Will damit sagen, es kommt nicht darauf an, welches Auto letztendlich das "Bessere" ist oder war, sondern, welches es schafft, Herz und Seele zu bewegen. Als der Audi 100 LS, Bj. '76 gehen musste, weil ihn ein weizengelber W123 anno 1981 abgelöst hat, ist mir bis HEUTE! der Audi im Kopf, Herz und Seele geblieben. Zur Erinnerung: Den Audi 100 hatten wir von 1976-81, da war ich 6 Jahre alt. Dennoch freu ich mich über jeden W123, jeden W116/W126 den ich seh. Jungs, haltet die Fahne hoch für Eure Mercedes! Ihr macht das toll! Ich wünschte mir, wir, die Audi-Gemeinde, hätten was ähnliches und ähnliche Unterstützung des Herstellers! Viel Spaß Euch allen, genießt es und freut euch auch auch mal wenn ihr einen Audi Typ 43 oder BMW E21/28 oder was auch immer seht!
I am so proud of owning my W123 model 1982 and still running till now . what a durable and reliable car !!!!!!
When Germany was still Germany and Mercedes Benz was something special.

I owned two of the kind, 300 D automatic and 280 E automatic with air condition! Both were made in 1981. Great cars!
Wow, this is the one and only, never before never after a car was manufactured to such perfections as the W123. I still have one of these, its a keeper.
I wish times like this would come back. Hardly see computers. You can see the joy and happiness on everyone's faces, unlike today where everyone is looking and holding a cell phone.

С тех запал в душу....как границы открылись, пособирал 1500 марок и 1995 году осуществлял свою мечту... жёлтый 123 , 240 d ...1979 года выпуска...до сих пор имел только мерседесы...два 123-их , 124, 211, 212-белый шикарный 7-ми ступенчатый автомат...все были дизеля. Сейчас перешёл на бензин...на w 208 отличная купэшка...и детей тоже приручаю к мерседесам !!! Сын ищет 124 ...

I have 300d 1978 love my Benz I feel like a king when I drive even today drives better than any newer car that are made of plastic and break every day this Benz will last me 50 more years !! Respect for mercedes-Benz best car ever made
The first model that comes to mind when it comes to Mercedes..Legendary W123..
I sat for the first time in 1986 in the 230e of my work colleague and by God I tell you, since that day I am w123 disciple. Now I have a Mercedes again after a long time. An E280 w210 and by God I tell you, it's the same great feeling as back then, especially with this soft automatic transmission

My father had a yellow 230E. It was not easy to buy and service the western car in the USSR, but somehow we managed to do this:) I like this car so much.
I have owned a 1981 w123 200 for the past 30 years. I bought it from the German Embassy in Wellington New Zealand. It had been an official vehicle. With the 2 litre motor it is a little slow off the mark but once in third gear it picks up and goes (it is a manual 4 speed). I agree with others comments about the W123. It is the most reliable and well built Benz I have owned. I have also owned a W124, 2 W210's and currently driving a very low k W211 but I can't bear to part with my W123 !
I've owned the W123 200, 230E and 280E. The 200 was adequate, the 230E perfect, the 280E did not meet my expectations. The engineering and attention to detail on the W123 was incredible, if only they had sorted out the body rust problem.

Oh what we would give for a galvanised W123! Rust is sadly the death of my 300D.
In morocco there are 800000+ w123 still working as taxi these cars will never die

the rust is their problem and i live in a very dry region, but in marrocos i saw every car destroyd on the driver side from the front to the back wich is strange normally people destroy the other side and when i saw that there were lot´s of 80´s S series 500SE

I used to riese up in these cars while my father has always had one... He couldn't get me out of it sometimes :)))) The greatest Car ever made is the W123!

A true Mercedes benz is a w123 , best car ever created , timeless machine (elegance , safety , comfort, design, faithful car...). The w123 is from the best automobile in the world , Mercedes should build them again under order.

W123 maybe the best, bar Unimog, but W116 perhaps the finest (my 1978 450SEL bought in 1996 as a cheap runabout led to various W123, W124, and W126 experiences, the latter two added corrosion resistance but sadly also began the start of the end of Best or Nothing.
I seriously want to do time travel Mercedes is Mercedes no other car can replace its legacy. Its impossible to express my feelings, joy, love etc etc etc.. I experience when I am driving it. If I can travel in time then I don't want to drive future model of Mercedes but the older models and I want to drive them all till the current generation of my E class..
One legendary car. Im proud i owned one❤

I miss those colours....Outside Gold, Brown, Champagne, Metalic Green, Silverblue, Orange.... Inside Creme beige, blue, green, brown...sometimes 2-3 tones of one colour and now you have to "fising" if you dont want black carpit.... "Phill Colins - True Colours"

it is not so much about the colors as it is for the shape the style and carisma of older cars especialy the w123 the best car ever build
I had my driving lessons in that car, brings back memories. Loved that car..

My dad still has his 1985 230E that he bought secondhand in 1989 or 1990. Even tho the w124 was already on sale at that time. It was an upgrade coz before that he owned a 1980 200, that he also bought secondhand in 1985. later years he bought a 2001 w210 E280 and a 2002 w203 C240 new.

You are right for old models and for S-class today. But for the A and B-class today, the quality and reliability are not very good. Mercedes has forgotten "the best or nothing".

Since Jürgen Schrempp was the leader from mid 90s an the DaimlerChrysler EXPERIENCE the quality sunk very deep. Cars Busses Lorry all from 1995 up to 2010 were rusty rolling electronic problems

No manufacturer would build such solid tank-like cars anymore. They are way too durable and expensive to build. Cars nowadays fall apart within six years to keep their sales going.
Such a cool blast from the not-so-distant past. As pointed out no heads buried in cell phones; they are making eye contact and talking to one another! But the best is the parade of Mercedes. The grilles, hub caps, and of course the hood ornament are pure Mercedes-Benz...the manufacturer of the finest cars ever built. (2000 CLK430 Cabriolet 130K)
Interesting, uplifting, those were my youthful days... sadly recently left my 30 year old W124 E-Class for a young(er) W211 which I enjoy and hope will do just as well.
I have 200 '80, it was from my Dad,since 2009 it' s mine. Now it has a rebuilt motor and run well.

Reminds me of my first Benz, a 1984 300D bought new from the dealer in Freiburg Germany. It was a euro spec car and I imported it to San Francisco. It had a 4 speed manual. The only parts I replaced in 225,000 miles was one clutch and the synchros in the transmission. I moved on to an 87 300E, 88 300E, and still have a 1990 300CE as well as a 2000 E430 and 2001 E430 Sport. The W210 is the last great Mercedes in my mind.

Back then Benz not only make reliable car but sturdy and elegant car. Nowadays , modern Benz cars are not reliable , not sturdy, not elegant but just emphasis on performance, hard setting suspension for sportiness ( AMG ) with Funny front grill design. It makes me wonder whether Benz is truly building car of grassroots heritage currently or just building under par Benz to grab more market share in selling to less affluent buyers ( young buyers). I wonder those Benz make in China, are they truly to Mercedes Benz standard or below?

Between 1987-2000,my father had a w123 mercedes 280E......manual 4 speed......color grey.....great car.....in december 1999 I bought a w126 mb 280 SE......with a set of amg wheels(penta)......

One of the best powered cars and cars in the world. Taxi drivers claim this in Portugal for this Mercedes Benz 240D model (Chassy W123) I bought one for myself, I am restoring it with 156,000 km. This engine Diesel makes more than ONE MILLION KM.

I wish they would make the older benzes again,they are elegant, distinguished, reliable, different color palettes, now they only have some colors, the cars then were carburated, fuel injected, diesel, very easy to fix, now the cars have sensors for everything.
