    On the points, get a dwell meter, feeler gauges are not so accurate. Hook it up, cap and rotor off, slightly u screw the screw on the points, crank the engine slightly open or close the points with a screwdriver u till you reach the dwell its suppose to be then tighten bolt. Your done. Just a tip. Dwell setting is more accurate then feeler gauge

  • @merc-ni7hy

    you FINALLY put points in it..only make air /fuel adjustments to the carb when the choke is fully open and the motor is up to temp..and use a vacuum gauge to set the air /fuel screws ..set both sides till you get the highest vacuum reading....and hook up the choke to a white wire with a black stripe coming off the alternator ,,this wire is live only when the engine is running and not with the engine off with key on ..it only has power when engine is running and this is the wire you want to use ..doing the 1.1/2 turns on the air fuel screws is only a ball park method ...use a vacuum gauge you will get pin point accuracy

    Fine tuning that carb really needs to be done with a vacuum gauge. You probably already know that, but check for intake leaks as well. That engine does seem to run pretty good, though!

  • @cobra02411
    @cobra024113 жыл бұрын

    If it's got points and they haven't been replaced since who knows when you put points and a condenser in it. Always change the condenser with the points. Top it off with a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires and maybe a coil. Save yourself the aggravation... :) The point's dwell, ignition timing, fuel mixture and timing are all related. There's a lot of fancy tools you can use but tune for highest vacuum and smooth idle. But you're going to have adjust everything over and over. Also, do it at operating temp. For new points a feeler gauge should be fine but once you start running it the actual gap is usually larger than the feeler gauge. If you don't have new points go a little tighter on the gap if it's not running right. That will increase your dwell. If you have older points you really should set them with a dwell meter to be right. Once dwell is set you set your base ignition timing. 6-10 degrees if you don't know, or what the manual says. If it cranks hard and slow it's too far advanced. If it pings under load it's too far advanced. Next onto fuel mixture. If you are going to rebuild or do anything to the carb bottom the idle mixture screws and count the turns so you can return them after you're done. If not, start with 1-1/2 turns out. When it's up to temp and timing is good turn them in till it stumbles, then out till it stumbles and half way in between is about right. Your idle speed might change, if so, reset the idle speed and start over. Shoot for highest vacuum. Once you're good you can adjust the timing, then go back and adjust the idle mixture... At that point it should start and run really well... I cut my teeth working on old garbage cars from the 50's, 60's and 70's growing up. When they're setup right you just touch the key and it's running.... It may be a little late for you guys but I figure it may help someone out. Also I prefer brake clean over gumout and carb cleaner and it works as starting fluid... Red is summer formula and green is winter... You want to watch chlorinated brake clean and open flame, especially in closed environments. So use non-chlorinated. The chlorinated dries cleaner though...

    Can I get your help to get a 76 f350 460’automatic running again?

  • @cobra02411

    @cobra02411

    2 ай бұрын

    @@MaliceDawgz Bar it over a few times to make sure it's free, then change the oil. Use the cheapest stuff you can find because you should change it again. I would disconnect the tank and run from a can if you think the fuel is junk. Clamp the hose going to the fuel pump and disconnect. Then take a line and dip one end into a 5 gal can and connect to the fuel pump. Crank it with the coil disconnected to make sure you get oil pressure, then hit it with some starting fluid or a little gas down the carb. If it coughs and runs for a second the ignition is probably good enough. Fill the carb through the vents and start it up. You'll probably have to clean / rebuild the carb though. If you don't get any spark then rebuild the distributor / ignition. You'll want a test light and a spark checker. Once you're happy with how it runs and are ready to drive it change the oil again. Or, just pour a little gas in the carb, hook up a jump box and hit the key... :)

    I am so happy to hear "Fat Tony" run. I knew it would.. not many would sound that bad cause of valves... when they are that bad, the owner would know that the engine was hurt. I do think that a nice sounding exhaust would be a nice addition to Tony as the sound if behind cab anywhere it gets way "Gooder" and for what it is, I would go mild sound.... like a V8 but cool. No magnaflow system or stuff, maybe some Thrush mufflers, their a glass pack and can sound a lot like healthy without being run to yourself. And just spruce it a bit but no magor redue like Madder got. I would hit it with some cheap primer and then nock down the highspots and then some cheap enamel as it is a work truck that would just love some real attention..... nice job an the shop looks like a slice of heaven .... I would look at the directions one more time on how to set air ratio as their all different.... sides, pictures are worth a million words

    99 times out of 100 it'll be the points. A set of points has a condenser which is an old name for a capacitor and capacitors over time just get electrically degraded and leaky. Ask anyone that restores old radios, one of the first orders of business after checking to see there are no shorts or open windings in transformers, choke, etc is to replace the old leaky capacitors. Yeah, you can check the old ones if you like, but they're so cheap of a part most of the time it's like, why bother? Just change them. Even if a radio will operate with the old caps in it, they'll still be leaky and the radio will perform much better with new ones.

    To set the carb, hook up a tack, set the idle at 800rpm then the air mixture screws turn all the way in then slowly open it up till you reach the highest rpm then keep going till it drops 40rpm then turn it back In 1/2 turn. Do that on both side. Then its done. That's called lean best.

    2 needle valve carb, one for low rpm and one for high rpm. One adjusts idle to about 2 grand and the other adjusts afr from 2 and up. Then your actual throttle idle adjustment. If it stalls when taking off or is hesitating its the low rpm needle valve, if your steady cruising and it hesitates from mid to wot then adjust the high needle valve. Once you have good throttle response, set the idle. Watch some videos about it
