Indeed, except NASCAR may have matched it three years later.

I still remember bouncing off the couch with my dad when they wrecked. I was screaming "GO BENNY GOOOOO no no no no" lol. I still consider this, along with Labontes win at Bristol after Earnhardt wrecked him to be the most exciting finishes ever. This was the Daytona fn 500 though so it ranks higher than Labontes win simply for that reason. Yeah, Keselowskis win while retired Edwards was flying through the air ranks up there too

One of the interesting subplots to this finish is how far they were ahead of 3rd place Benny Parsons. You'd think with Petty and Pearson wrecking late, Parsons might have been close enough to pass them both. Guess he must have been too far back on the last lap to try and pull a Geoff Bodine at North Wilkesboro '89 rabbit out of the hat win.

Of course, Parsons would have had to pass the leaders three times, since he was two laps down at the time of the crash. However, Parsons might still have won the race had it not been for a lucky break David Pearson caught. As he was spinning toward the inside wall, Pearson's car hit the car of 14th place finisher Joe Frasson, who was trying to avoid the Petty/Pearson crash by going down pit road, and Pearson's car hit Frasson's car on pit road. Had that not happened, it's quite possible that Pearson would have hit the inside wall, or even the pit wall in such a way that it could have killed his engine, and his car would have been just as lifeless at Petty's car was, and Parsons might have been able to make up the two laps and win at about 30 MPH, which is about how fast he was going when he went through the crash. That's always been one of the hidden facts about the crash at the end of the 1976 Daytona 500. Everyone thinks it was a two-car wreck (Petty and Pearson), but that wreck actually involved a third car (Frasson), and that third car may have been the key to Pearson winning the race.

Petty and Pearson were the only two cars on the lead lap when they both wrecked. Parsons was one lap down. If neither Petty nor Pearson would have been able to cross the finish line, then Parsons likely would have won the race. David Pearson was credited with lapping the field in this race. Richard Petty wasn't credited with finishing the final lap. He couldn't get the car restarted on his own so his crew members came running over to push start the car. It was illegal for his crew to assist him like that so Petty was only credited with 199 of the 200 laps finished.

Actually, Parsons was two laps down when the crash between Petty and Pearson occurred. Parsons was lapped a second time with about two or three laps remaining, but did manage to unlap himself once after the wreck happened.

Fascinating, I had no idea. I just recall hearing that Petty's car stalled, because he mashed in the clutch, and the fan got jammed. Pearson didn't mash in his clutch, and that ended up being the difference... And nice avatar, Veggieoilerfan. I'm not Canadian, but I've always liked the logo of the Canadian National Hockey Team.

22:26 I wonder if this is the only capture of Johnny Ray's near fatal crash. He got nailed in the driver's door when the camera focused on Ramo Stott's car.

would have been nice if they showed all the line up, lots of regular racers could make the race's back in those days. the cars were actually built from factory cars. i was there in 1973 and 1976, lots better back then, no fans allowed in the pits, each entry was allowed a certain number of pit passes, you didn't bring you wife and kids and neighbors and drunken fans in the pits, only drivers , crews and race personnel and certain vendors. made it a lot safer with out fans walking around the cars with their finger up thier ass getting in the way.
