NFL Football was so much more fun to watch during this era of Professional Football, the game was more diversified than todays football philosophy. I enjoyed watching Oakland run the football, break down Pittsburg's defense and mix them up with screens and other passing plays. Dominant victory for 2 NFL Teams whom were dominant during the 1970's. Thank you for the upload such treasured memories for me.

As someone who grew up in the 70's - unfortunately a Giants fan and they were horrible - I agree that the game was so much better. For me the biggest difference is teams were together for years. No free agency meant you grew with the team from year to year. When the Giants won their first super bowl, it was almost as I was a part of the team. Nowadays you simply don't have that connection. For that reason and many others the game was far superior. Don't get me started on the woke BS.

People forget just how loud the Coliseum was in the early days. Greatest rivalry of all time.

I was 8 and in Kaiser Permanente Oakland CA. I was taken by my dad after the Division game for appendicitis that ruptured. My dad comes to visit after the game in a celebratory mood, wearing my Raider's football helmet, that just sat on top of his head. All the nurses and security telling him he has to be quiet or he will be removed, he didn't care. My mom calmed him down. We lived on 64th. I didn't get discharged until early February!

If you came out of this game alive with everything working, you're one hell of a man.

Love watching Curt Gowdy do the Raiders games. Seemed like if there was a Raiders game on curt Gowdy was doing the play by play

I grew up a cowboy fan in the 70s but the Steelers raiders games were the real super bowls of the era.

Cliff Branch, arguably the most feared deep threat of his era, 3 time Superbowl champ and highly effective in all 3 Superbowl games. His numbers easily hold up against Stallworth and Swann. Those two are in the Hall, Branch is not. This is a prime example of Raider hating. And don't get me started on Jack Tatum. Just ridiculous.

And Jim Plunkett. As soon as he was surrounded by players whose talent matched his own he won two Super Bowls in a four year span. I think he should also be the HOF. Tom Flores as well. The Raiders and Cowboys have both been screwed over by the writers.

@@mattosullivan9687 Nothing but respect for the Steelers organization. Unfortunately many Raiders had to wait far too long to get inducted into the Hall of Fame. That an obvious future inductee like Cliff Branch had to wait until this year to finally get enshrined, but if the NFL would have only put him in only 3 years earlier; then he'd have lived to see it. In my opinion the greatest years of the NFL were from 1970 through 1985. Yes, it was a little too rough on the human body and mind, however, it was the pinnacle time period for the game; in my opinion. I started playing in pads and full contact when I was 8. I'm certain that I had over 10 major concussions, but it was a great time to play and watch football. Every time that I got my "bell rung" the trainer always held up two fingers before he asked me "how many fingers am I holding up?" Thankfully, I only have minor CTE damage and it doesn't appear to be getting worse. I don't know how Terry Bradshaw can even speak in coherent sentences? Take care!

Oakland's offensive line dominated the Steelers' defensive line with the running game in the 1976 AFC Championship game. Stabler mixed his plays beautifully in that game. Stabler unfortunately had to sit out the end of that game because of a concussion so back-up QB Mike Rae replaced him late in that game.

It's funny how those consistent winners never met in a Super Bowl in the 70s when they had some of the best teams year in and year out. It's amazing they didn't play each other. It's sort of like the early 90s when the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers just missed playing each other in the Super Bowl every season.

It's just as well. Being a teen in Houston during most of the 70s I only came to truly loathe the Steelers. If the Cowboys couldn't have beaten the Raiders either that's not a good universe. Maybe not SB 5 as the Colts were pretty tough but the Raiders absolutely should have been defending their title in SB12. Rob Lytle fumbled and the Raiders did recover. Tatum was a jerk. If he hadn't tried to put Fuqua in the ICU the Immaculate Reception wouldn't have occured. And the Raiders might have been in SB7.

Such a satisfying feeling in the day for the raiders to finally win the AFC championship game. They were labeled as the team that couldn't win the big game, after getting beat about 4 times before.

And they demolished Cincy in a MNF game I was at. The Steelers would have missed the playoffs had Oakland lost to Cincy and the media was expecting them to lay down. Jack Tatum talks about that in his book

After 1967 when Raiders lost SB II to GB 33-14 this happened: 1968 lost AFL title to jets 28-23 Lamonica throws illegal lateral pass at very end. 1969 lost AFL title 17-7 @home to chiefs 1970 lost AFC title to Colts 27-17 1971 missed playoffs 1972 lost to Pittsburgh 13-7 on 'Immaculate reception' opening round playoff game. 1973 lost AFC title to Miami 27-10. 1974 lost AFC title game to Pittsburgh 24-13 @home 1975 lost Afc title game again to Pittsburgh 16-10 So yeah, 1976 Raiders were motivated to win and erase a decade of playoff failure.

Today’s NFL is much inferior to this era

Back when the Raiders were very good and the game wasn't sanitized like it is now.

Born 1963 and raised in San Diego. I became a heretic and went to the dark side sometime during the 1968 season and became a Raider fan. I don’t have to remind Oakland Raiders fans about the playoff futility from 1968 until this game in 1976 against the hated Steelers. 1968 AFL Title game Don Maynard beats George Atkinson deep Broadway Joe Namath hits him game over. 1969 Title game same result different team. Lenny Dawson leads KC to title. 1970 same result different team. Couldn’t tell you if John Unitas or Earl Morrall led the Colts to the title. Couldn’t tell you if the immaculate reception by Frankie Harris was 1971 or 72. Being a Raiders fan was like being a Boston Red Sox fan. 1975 Raiders lose title game to Steelers. Then this game the Raiders finally broke thru. Warren Bankston what a blast from the past. Van Eaghen and Clarence Davis a great one two punch. Lbs The terribly underrated Phil Villipiano Monte Johnson and the stork Ted Hendricks. Art Shell and Gene Upshaw opening up holes on the left side big enough to drive a truck thru. Freddie B Mr Inside and Cliff Branch Mr outside a great combo one of the greatest ever in NFL history!!!!! To Tom Brady’s sycophants Could Tommy take the same hits Kenny Stabler and Terry Bradshaw took in this game? No way Jose. Fred Biletnikoff the MVP in the super bowl. Freaking awesome!!! The Raiders haven’t won a Super Bowl since Al Davis purged Marcus Allen. Perhaps time to invite Marcus back retire his number or something. Sorry I can’t support Nark Dumb and dumber Davis since he moved to Las Vegas. The Raiders belong in Oakland. The NFL is run by a cartel of criminal businessman. They move teams like chess pieces, skim the cancer fund, tell players they care about cte then add a game to the schedule. The commissioners are overpaid puppets. The players are overpaid cry babies. Coaches can't speak frankly without retribution. Referees suck. Rule changes every year since 1977. @@sammyvh11 The NFL is no longer driven by the gate receipts from working-class ticket buyers. It's about corporate suites and letting the rubes watch from home via insane tv contract deals. Oakland (and San Diego) taxpayers were unwilling to pay for billion-dollar stadiums with better corporate suites and clubs. That's their right. But its the NFL's right to take their teams to cities that will pay for top-of-the-line stadiums.

They'll develop the land with tons of commercial developments and low income housing...and they'll collect property taxes on all of it! Meanwhile, the city will be void of all sports teams. David Lafleche During that season, the Patriots in consecutive weeks won in Pittsburgh & destroyed the Raiders, 48-17. Patriots got shafted on that roughing the passer call on Sugar Bear Hamilton. Considering what took place afterwards, the Patriots could have certainly won Super Bowl 11.

Yes the Steelers were handicapped without Rocky and Franco. With their defense intact without injuries which was arguably the best defense ever.

Finally Oakland beat Pittsburgh, in what was the real Championship game. 16-1 after they destroyed the Vikings in SB XI. RIP Snake, Branch, Tatum and Oakland Coliseum...Great times, great fans, & great memories. Hell, even our punter was great!

In those days the AFC championship game was referred to sometimes as the 'Real Super Bowl' not true in most years but in '76 it was. These were far and away the best two in football.

And in the prior week lost to the Raiders after some very questionable calls by ref Ben Dreith. That game and the entire season was in the bag for the Raiders, and many gamblers and mob insiders knew it.

The closest I've seen to matching Shell and Upshaw was the Hogs' Jacoby and Grimm. Sumpin' 'bout that Left Side. BTW, all but Jacoby are in the HOF. C'mon HOF. Put Joe Jacoby in.

When all was said and done for the 1976 season, yes the Oakland Raiders were the best team that season. Pittsburgh had not quite established their passing game in 1976. Their offensive strength was their running game. Had Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier been healthy for the 1976 AFC Championship game, the outcome may have been different. But we'll never know. The Raiders were over due for a Championship.

Had Willie Brown been healthy for the championship the year before, that game could have had a different ending. Both Steeler touchdowns were a result of his absence. His replacement, Neal Colzie, missed a tackle Brown never would to allow a Franco Harris TD, then he slipped in the end zone when he was in position to make an interception which conceded a John Stallworth score. If you watched the '76 title game as I did, you may have noticed there weren't any holes for the Steeler running backs. Doubt Harris and Bleier would have found any more room than did Reggie Harrison or Frenchy Fuqua. I don't think Pittsburgh gained a single rushing yard on their one scoring drive. They gained more rushing yardage than the Raiders did from the '74 AFC Championship game, but still got stuffed all day in '76.

That Raider offensive line is one of the all time best. To run against that Pittsburgh defense was awesome

Good call on the Stillers' shitty defense. The Raiders had their way with them. Sure, Franco and Rocky were out, but the Picksburgh D was in-tact. Hell, they shutout six teams in '76!!! Always nice to see the Picksburgh Stillers lose, even if it was from years ago.... Oh, Cleveland Browns fan here. Season tickets in the Dawg Pound since 1993..............

The Steelers were trying to three-peat that year and just ran out of gas. Even if they had Harris and Bleier, it would have been very difficult to beat Oakland, who had only lost one game all year and was playing at home.

My two favorite teams to watch play each other

This was like watching the Romulans fight the Klingons. Who do you root for when it's bully vs bully? Evil Empire vs Evil Empire? But seriously, this was about as good as it got in the 1970s. Hard-hitting football at its finest. The two tough, intimidating guys from two tough, blue collar towns who could put a hurt on anyone at anytime. As a fan of the Oilers, I was just hoping these two would be like antimatter and destroy each other.

Steelers had the best team of all time that year going for the 3rd Super Bowl in a row. Lost their 2 1000 yard rushers Harris and Blier in the Baltimore game

I loved the Sports Illustrated cover of a smiling Clarence Davis as "Tramples the Steelers " and the main caotion read "Oakland Wins A Big One". Other than ending Miami's dynasty in 1974 in the 'Sea of Hands' game, the 1976 AFC Championship game win over the Steelers was probably the Raiders greatest victory.

This was sweet revenge for the Raiders after losing 2 straight AFC title games to Pittsburgh.

Two of the greatest teams to ever play the game. I loved the Steel Curtain. Had to respect the Raiders whether you liked them or not. They were both filled with talented players on both sides of the ball but were bullies because they basically intimidated the rest of the NFL.

I know that going into the game the Steelers had a lot of injuries specifically to their running backs. But it's rare in a playoff game, you saw Bradshaw and the offense this out of sorts. They looked like a team already beaten from the start. They were never really in this game. The Patriots played the Raiders much tougher the previous week.

Great observation. Spoke to Rocky Bleier who spoke at the company I worked for when he was doing speeches. He said the Steelers basically changed the offense due to the injuries and they were not confident it would work. It didn’t lol. He also said Oakland changed their blocking scheme and the Steelers never adjusted for it . Oakland ran all over them.

@@dalewolf9684 I ran into Rocky Bleier on the motivation speaking circuit. Here is what he told me about that game. Because the Steelers would have no running game…Franco, Rocky and Fuqua although he did play some were all injured. So the Steelers installed a new offense with one back and three WRs. But it didn’t look good all week and the team was not comfortable going into the game. He said they had zero confidence in that offense.The Steelers at that time were not built to throw 20-30 times a game. Also Oakland knew they couldn’t run so ignored play action.

Nobody talks about him anymore but he killed my Cowboys and called his own plays but was part of a great team. It was time for the Raiders to beat them. Had Ken Anderson and the Bengals beat them at the end of 75 and this season, he might have made the HOF already.

@@dalewolf9684 Bradshaw played horrible v Denver in the fourth quarter. That was a winnable game until those ints. As far as Cindy goes, they had zero excuses for not winning the division. In 76 all they had to do is beat the Steelers once playing w a backup QB. They failed. In 77, they beat the Steelers in week 13 and all they had to do was beat the oilers in week 14. They failed again. If the bengals had handled business, the Steelers would have missed the playoffs in 76 and 77. That changes the narrative quite a bit. So Anderson finally got to the SB, then lost to SF. He got the rap of not being able to win the big ones and that’s why he isn’t in canton although I believe he will one day.

Raider's year. Up 24-7 early 3rd quarter when Stabler was knocked out. Oakland offensive line simply blew out the Steel Curtain this day.

As a Steelers fan, I’m torn between wishing Franco and Rocky were able to play and being happy for John Madden.

Back when fans could run on the field😊 I’m a raiders fan but I think the patriots should have been in the Super Bowl that year. But I was happy that Oakland beat Minnesota, 32-14 and the score was similar to when Green Bay beat Oakland in super bowl 2, 33-14.

I watched this game when it aired and have been a Steelers fan for over 50yrs. Not to take anything from the great Raiders but you couldn't play that team with key players missing. Great game.

What the hell happened on the last play?

With no Harris or blier.playing at Oakland the Steelers was never going to win that game the raiders was a great team that year the Steelers did have the best defense in the NFL that year.but with no offense it just wasnt going to happen. that 1976 raiders team can be thrown in the argument as one of the best teams ever.

The Raiders derserved one. Steelers already had two, and would soon get two more. Raiders, Dallas, Miami and Pittsburgh dominated the 70s.

I’m A Raiders fan but I blame the Steelers lost on Harris and Blair for not playing they were able to play in case of an emergency well it’s the AFC championship that’s a freaking Emergency.!! You have two weeks off after this game suck it up and play I think steelers should’ve won this game but I think we should’ve beaten Pittsburgh to go to the Super Bowl in 74 when they went to their first.. those two Super Bowls got switched because this 76 Steeler team was just nasty what they did on defense never duplicated in NFL history.!! & Our 74’ Raiders Were Ready.. You’re stupid that was our year even if Franco and Rocky played we still would have beaten them get over it.

Lots of injuries to Steelers offense that year. Defense was pitching shutouts to win games

Oakland finally got a SB win in two weeks. They could have easily had five by this time.

3rd times the charm. Just ask the niners in 1994. First one at home, L, second one on the road, L, third one at home, W. Same path for the 94 niners and the 76 raiders

The Steelers were the hot team and Belier and Franco were both thousand yd rushers that season. Oakland needed a fluky roughing the passer call to even get to the AFC title game. If Franco is on the field then Oakland has to respect the running game and play action which allows the Steelers defense to rest more. Also, 10 of Oakland's points came off short fields due to a pick by Bradshaw, which was really a drop and a blocked punt. That's 14 points instead of 24.

😂 not crying, the Steelers won four Super Bowls in 6 years and beat the Raiders in back-to-back conference Championship games along the way, and overall have 6 rings to the Raiders 3. The Raiders haven't even won a Super Bowl in 30 years. And I'm not referring to the opener of 76. If you watch the NFL films documentary of the AFC Championship game of 76 you'll see what I'm saying about the pick that was a drop and the blocked punt. What's pathetic is John Madden was so lame that he actually put the score of the 76 title game on the Super Bowl ring after having to beat the Steelers without their two 1000 yard running backs. And the Raiders were lucky to even be in that game in the first place. The refs in the divisional round against the Patriots gave them a fresh set of downs, and first and goal, after a very questionable hit to the helmet on Stabler

Imagine if the Raiders were to take a powder(On Monday Night Football) At Home to Cincinnati earlier in the season. You would not even see Pittsburgh in this game.

The Oakland-Cinncinati game you are referring to that was played on Monday Night Football was the last game of the regular season in 1976 in which if Oakland lost the game then the Steelers would have been knocked out of a playoff spot in the 1977 postseason. But as John Madden said after the game , all the speculation and talk that Oakland was going to deliberately lose that game to keep the Steelers out of the playoffs was utter nonsense! The Raiders wanted to beat the Steelers in the playoffs so that football fans and sportswriters could not make the excuse if Oakland got to and won Super Bowl11 that, "Well they only won the Super Bowl because they didn't have to play against Pittsburgh in the playoffs!".

Michael Barlow It was not The Final Game of the 1976 Season, if I recall, the Raiders ended the Season with a win at San Diego. Obviously the Raiders wanted the Steelers so badly they could’ve tasted it! After beating them in Week 1 at Home, they must’ve been so looking forward to seeing them again in the AFC Championship Game when the Raiders beat Cincinnati at Home on Monday Night Football.

It has been so many years since that wonderful 1976 season that it is easy to forget that that Raiders-Bengals game was the next to last game of the season on the Raiders schedule on December 6, 1976. And then the following week , as you correctly pointed out, the Raiders defeated the Chargers to end the regular season. But all the talk and speculation prior to that Raiders-Bengals game on Monday Night Football about that the Raiders might deliberately lose the game to prevent the Steelers from making the playoffs was total hogwash as John Madden and Howard Cosell stated , because the Raiders wanted the opportunity to defeat the Steelers in the playoffs after losing to the Steelers in the postseason three times before in 1972, 1974 and 1975.

That game is on youtube. Great times, great rivalry. I think the people in Pittsburgh started that rumor to make the Raiders really show up against Cincinnati to prove something . Pittsburgh fans were scared they were going to miss the playoffs without the Raiders help.

There was No chance for the Steelers on this day. The Raiders had superior talent and when they were motivated no team in the NFL could could compete with them. The Raiders OL dominated the Steel Curtain. I often wonder how many Super Bowls the Raiders might have won had John Rauch remained the HC. Madden was great in the regular season but he would get too conservative during the playoffs. However, during the 76 playoffs he finally got aggressive. A lot of people don’t know this but Madden’s job was on the line this game. It likely would have been the end for him had the Raiders lost this game.

Where i live college basketball is king. I am in the middle of the North Carolina, Duke, NC State triangle with 13 championships between them, more than any other state in men's college basketball except for California. We are the only state with three different schools with at least 2 championships each.

@Jack Torrance Excellent information provided. Thank you. Now, allow me to bore you into a coma...I am 61 and the team above all others that I followed for more than 50 years, was the Dallas Cowboys. The first televised game that I ever saw was the Ice Bowl...the 1967 NFL Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Cowboys. I won't go into details but I was hooked by the star on the Dallas helmets. I had just turned 9 years old. My favorite Cowboys ever were Coach Tom Landry, defensive tackle Bob Lilly and wide receiver Bullet Bob Hayes. Bob won 2 Gold Medals at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics in the 100 yard dash and the 4 by 100 relay. He was also a member of the 1971 Cowboys, along with Landry and Lilly, that won Super Bowl VI in New Orleans over the Miami Dolphins by a score of 24 to 3. Hayes is the only man in history to own a Super Bowl Championship ring and an Olympic Gold medal. All 3 men have busts in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The second football team I loved was the Oakland Raiders. Can tell you about them later. My favorite athletes ever include Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Jack Nicklaus, Roger Federer, Mario Lemieux, Joe Louis, Bobby Hull, Henry Aaron, Tony Gwynn, Mark McGwire and THE greatest baseball player ever, Willie Mays. I noted your reference to the Hartford Whalers. As you know, they came to Raleigh, NC and are now the Carolina Hurricanes. They play about 30 minutes from where I live. I recall vividly when they defeated the Edmonton Oilers in 7 games to win the Stanley Cup in 2006. You mentioned a reference to The Shining. I immediately caught the name Jack Torrance. Was there one that I missed? And did you see MY reference as well? I think the movel is GREAT but the movie is overrated. In my opinion Jack Nicholson was not the right actor for the role because he looks deranged from the moment he is introduced. And Shelley Duvall is terrible. She was better as Olive Oyl in Popeye with the late Robin Williams. Btw, Stephen King himself hated the Kubrick film. Have you seen the tv version starring Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay from 1997? It is MUCH truer to the great novel and King was very pleased. The scenes between the lead actors were said to be so intense that they genuinely did not get along. Enough for now...You are the caretaker, Mr. Torrance. You have always been the caretaker.

The other book is the chilling Shirley Jackson novel "The Haunting of Hill House". Anyway, the opening line in "The Shining" is Jack Torrance thought "Officious little prick." Not true. This Steeler team never beat the Raiders after 75. The Raiders went 6-0 after 75 to 83. The Raiders won 3 SB's during that span. That's a myth. One of those losses was the immaculate deception too.
