Got a 79 as well ,I was just going to replace the sending, end up replacing the tank too. I Paid some one to replace it before and didn't work. I bought a 2nd unit and replaced it my self and didn't work either. When I fill my tank the needle goes only half way on the gauge. Weird thing is mt cable had a socket with 3 connectors and the sending unit only 2 . My new tank have a weird pipe welded inside the tank about 6 inches hanging in the inside.

My only suggestion would have opted for a new SS sending unit and seal the interior of the new tank with POR or the Eastwood fuel tank sealer. You stated that you were paranoid about the clamps, keeping the tank rust free is important. Mine is from experience renewing classic car fuel tanks, and RV fuel tanks. My 2cents.

I’d have to go back and look at the listed but I don’t think the only sending unit I could find was SS. I’ve seen several of the fuel tank coating flake off and plug pickup tubes. But maybe they would work better on a new tank?

@@mjmcomputers POR sells a cleaning and prep kit, the silver colored fuel tank sealer won't degrade or brake down, surface prep is key. I have never seen their tank sealer flake. Others have told me they like the Eastwood fuel tank sealer, again, metal prep before sealing is key. Yes, I agree on new tank metal prep would be easy before sealing. No corrosion to deal with from old gas or alcohol gas.

I have a 63 Lincoln Continental and I have some sort of vacuum leak and I am confused about it. I just took off my tank and cleaned it. I thought I might have had water in it. It had been sitting for 3 years. The car starts and stalls after a while. My car has vapor lock so I installed the return on it. It was not being used before. My tank has some leads to it outside of the return and fuel line. I don’t know what those are. I am wondering if they could be the source of the problem I am having. There is a hose above the center of the tank and near the tank. It is closed off and not attached to the tank. I have a line on passenger side of the tank that has a big filter on it. I have no idea what that line is. It attaches to the tank at the bottom on the passenger side. If you know what these are please let me know.😢

Unlike it's newer siblings it looks like removal ov the tank does not have any clips to disconnect the fuel lines above the wheels?

    Nope, just clamps.

I'm shocked you could even get a tank and sending unit.

Yeah I was shocked how cheap the tank was. It does seem hard to find some parts for this thing. Luckily tank wise I think the tank was probably shared with Mercury and possibly the thunderbird.
