It's funny how the memory plays tricks, I watched a lot of football on the TV in the 70s, but I can't remember Kenneth Wolstenholme doing the commentary. I can't remember Leighton James playing for Derby either.

Presume this game was played relatively early in the season. From around October onwards there wouldn't have been that amount of grass on the pitch back in the 70s.

Typical St James' Park response to the opposition scoring...deathly silence. Boro was the same too and then the "You're gonna get your effin head kicked in" chant would start!

Sounds like Kenneth Wolstenholme came out of retirement to commentate on this one? I'm sure he hung up the mic in 1971.

+Stuart S You're very wrong. He moved from the BBC and was snapped-up by Tyne-Tees I think. If you look around at other Newcastle, Middlesbro games of the mid 70's, you'll find him commentating on them too. Try Middlesbro 4 Coventry 4 from 1974-75 season. A great game. Quite a good commentator too!

I don´t like Kenneth, to be honest... he was quite simply not in the same league as younger men, who came to commentate football on BBC in late 60s - early 70s, like David Coleman (my absolute favourite), Gerald Sinstadt, John Motson... no wonder Kenneth left BBC in 1971.

@@Farerets Sorry mate but how can you compare Kenneth Wolstenholme with Motson , Ken was miles better that idiot , Ken commentated Motson treated watching viewers like idiots , with that stupid laugh , and his use of histryonics , Barry Davis was better than him
