I was sitting looking straight across at Marty Robbins beautiful Dodge charger crashed out that day, I was 13 years old and had to watch this to remember but I remember them rolling off starting line and the sound when they came roaring past Thanks to my dad Carl George for taking me to see this I was a David Pearson fan then with my dad but in high school I started seeing and racing mopars ...been all Mopar ever since
My late father and two of my late uncles were at this race. I remember about where we sat. It's amazing to be able to watch it again. Knowing I was there with my young daddy. Great race too. My dad and I loved Pearson.
For a pit crew renowned as one of the best, Richard Petty's pit crew certainly had more than their fair share of pit disasters. There was the fire late in this race while they were trying to refuel on a late caution. Then the following spring at Talladega, there was the infamous incident when a pit side water tank exploded, killing Randy Owens and injuring other crewmen. And even toward the end of Petty's career, there was another major pit road inferno in the latter stages of the Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta in 1989. For an organization that set the benchmark of excellence in the sport in so many different ways to have continuous pit road disasters had to have been surprising.

1,184 starts over 35 years. Stuff's going to happen!
Maaaaaan for a brief moment there I got REAL excited when I saw both #11 AND #43 in the pits with their hoods up while knowing #21 was having problems. For a brief moment there I thought there would be a surprise winner lol. Then Rutherford spins right on cue lol.
5:15 Among the competitors in this race was a well known country and western singer with a medical history that included not one, but two open heart surgeries!! I am forever gobsmacked by the human condition.
Petty comes off a last place at Martinsville the week earlier while Cale finished 11th after crashing out of the lead.
Great Racing!
22:53 my father was in that race in Charlotte in 1974
"dont ever pass me on the outside". Wreak.
What the broadcast didn't show is the fact that Pearson had them covered all day. He has a unscheduled pitstop and got behind and I sat and watched him catch back up each lap. I hardly took my eyes off of him all day. He had the fastest car all day.
Day made! Thanks y’all
loved it.
The 1 Bruton Smith owned track that he didnt ruin

Actually he bankrupted Charlotte by 1962 and the courts put the track under furniture store owner Richard Howard BTW they made Atlanta lightyears better in 2022
Race was considered lost media; not anymore.
Charlotte is the station for Rockingham.
Who was #43 again? Was it Tom Petty and his pit crew, the Heart Breakers?
Air date October 19, 1974
Gee and they didn’t have any stage breaks!
Petty was sideways multiple times in this race and the 600 earlier
Rockingham.
Pretty sure that that EARL ROSS WIN at Martinsville the week before held out for being the only “forgeiner” winning a top level nascar race….until Chi-Town 2023.
