1974 Lamborghini Urraco

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Introduced at the 1970 Turin Auto Show, design was by Marcello Gandini, then working for Carrozzeria Bertone, the all-new Uracco or "Little Bull" was a direct response to Ferrari's then-new Dino 246 GT and a shot across the bow of other European sports cars of the era like the Maserati Merak and the Porsche 911. This baby Lambo followed the Miura in using a transverse powertrain mounted directly behind the cabin, with the engine being an all-new, compact 90-degree aluminum unit with iron wet cylinder liners. The V8 was a clean-sheet design by Lamborghini's head engineer, Paolo Stazani, an 86- x 53-mm bore and stroke brought a 2,462.9-cc displacement, and with a 10.4:1 compression ratio and four Weber 40 IDF 1 downdraft carburetors, this engine made 220 hp at 7,500 RPM, and 166-lb.ft. of torque at 5,750 RPM; significantly more than the Ferrari 246 GT's 195 hp at 7,600 rpm. This V-8, along with the exclusive alloy-case five-speed manual transmission and the rear suspension, was mounted in a rubber-isolated rear subframe that could be separated by removing only four bolts for easy servicing. In October 1972 an improved Urraco "S" was introduced, and while we'd love to say it added 50 more horsepower, instead the "S" package added a full leather upholstery, lightly tinted power windows and the option of metallic paint, while the engine received new Weber 40 DCNF carburetors. These modifications made the Urraco "S" more user-friendly than earlier model Urracos'.

I think you meant to say the P111 was created for the American market. The P200, like the Ferrari 208GTB, was created for the Italian market which offered tax breaks for cars under 2 litre engine size. The P111 did have the bigger black rubber bumpers and all the additional smog equipment which robbed horsepower and different carburetors, but still better to own than a P200

Sorry, I don't want to sound arrogant, but there is an error in the video. The Urraco P200 with the 2.000 ccm Version of the V8 was never "built for the USA". In fact it was a special version for the italian market and its tax law. Cars with more than 2.0 liters had to pay a luxury tax in Italy; back in the '70s and '80s. Because of that reason, Maserati developed the 2.0 Merak, and Ferrari developed a 208 with a turbo charged 2.0 instead of the 308/328, and Lotus sold the Esprit 2.0 in Italy instead of the 2.2 version, and even BMW had a special "M3" for the italian market. The Lamborghini Urraco came as a P200 (Italian market), a P250, a P250S, and the P3000 (with a cam chain instead of cam belts). edit: The version especially for the north american market had the internal code Urraco P111.

Lamborghini didn't meet Ferrari at a function, he went to the factory to speak to him but was dismissed in a rather rude fashion, he then went home determined to outdo Ferrari by building his own car, the rest is history! Beautiful, characterful car the Urraco, I'd dearly love one...

Probably because you are looking at the US gt4s with the horrible bumpers and ugly side markers. If the Urraco had those it would look just as 'awkward'.

I’ve heard other more lengthy stories outlining how Mr. Lamborghini tried several times to have the Ferrari factory service the transmission without satisfaction. Then when he brought the issue up to Enzo in person at the social affair, Enzo shrugged him off. THAT is what Lamborghini considered the highest of insults prompting him to create his own sports cars.

Wedgetastic! I think the Urraco's styling was way beyond exceptional. It's too bad the car for the US market was strangled by US emissions, and those ugly-ass 5mph bumpers. Not a good time for any car manufacture. Lamborghini wanted to compete against the Porsche 911, but had a giant oversight in this regard. They failed to secure a dealer network of any size for people to come see, purchase, and maintain the cars. I think back in the day Porsche teamed up with Audi to get their cars into showrooms. And yes, to call it a 2+2 is a stretch, but I really like the idea of some extra space behind the driver and passenger seats. This is space for jackets, purses, gym bags, and other items one tends to carry in their everyday use. As for the engine, it's too bad the Urraco didn't start with the better 3.0L engine, then go up to the 3.5L a few years later. The car is not light, so it really needed that extra displacement. Nevertheless, this is one of my all-time favorite cars. 🙂

I've heard three different versions of the confrontation between Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini. They had a very personal and intense dislike for each other. But a lot of people had an intense dislike for Enzo Ferrari. The Urraco sort of was the predecessor for the Silhouette and later the Jalpa. I've been in a Jalpa before and I was surprised how much room it had. I'm 6' 5" and I could fit without any problem. It had a lot more room than a Toyota MR2 or Pontiac Fiero.

Slight correction. It doesn't conform to EPA or CARB. It's that, being a 1974, it doesn't *HAVE TO* conform. It's grandfathered out. Also, that reverse lockout mechanism is not unique, lots of cars have that.

Please, Urraco refers to the black and white color scheme of some bulls, similar to the one in a magpie (urraca). Not the first video about the Urraco that gets it wrong. The English version of wikipedia is misleading.

Often overlooked the Urraco, I think they are cool, but I still prefer the 308GT4 if I'm being honest. But yeah as someone else pointed out, there was the Italian tax law in the 70's for engines over 2000cc, hence the Ferrari 208GT4, and 208 turbo built for the Italian market, I think there was a 206GT as well which had an alloy body....... But your videos are great, well presented and thought out, maybe they did only have the 2000cc Urraco's for the US market, maybe this is what you uncovered in your research.....but the Italian tax law was definitely in effect when the Urraco's were made...
