Here to remember my '74 Vega Kammback. Found in a back yard in 1987, $250. Cleaned up nicely. Kept it 2 years and only replaced the starter. HOWEVER, the timing belt would fly off on occasion and one night in the Mojave Desert after a stargazing party, it's low clearance vs the space between tire tracks on the dirt road ripped the wire off that oil sensor mentioned @3:14. Dead Vega in scorpion country... A flashlight, pocket knife, adjustable wrench and a careful drive back to the highway. Slept in it several cold nights between apartments. P.O.S.? yea kinda but still fondly remembered.

I love the 74 Impala. I've seen a few white or blue Spirit of America ones for sale. They all have AT PS and PB obviously but almost nine have PW. I know it was rarer back then but all our cars had them. What kills me are the two door cars with power door locks but no power windows. I've seen this on lots of GM from Nova to Cutlass Supreme.

My grandparents had a 4-door Impala sedan. Thing was a BEAST and I loved it. It's still my dream car to this day.

My uncle had a 74 Impala 4 door sedan with knitted cloth interior and a 350. I'm glad I took several pictures of myself beside it. I was 17 at the time and enjoyed every minute riding in it.

Had one of these in 73 .Nothing could keep the body from turning to junk .The engine burned oil after 30k finally traded it in on a 78 Bronco .They gave it all away to the Japanese with mistakes like the Vega.

My dad was a Chevy dealer these films were shown to customers usually prior to a test drive.I use to watch them all the time when I would go work with my dad love seeing them.

Gosh! I remember those Impala cars well. I was in elementary school that year. Just about every kids parents owned one. And my sister had the Vega wagon. Never had any problems with it. However she wrecked it in Mississippi when she hit a patch of ice on a bridge.

Vega was a sharp looking car .

I remember seeing the trains that carried the Vegas from the factory. They were shipped with the front of the car pointed down on a 90 degree angle.

That's why they came up with special side post batteries so acid wouldn't leak out. Vegas looked good. But lacked quality. I put an alternator off 1974 Vega with A/C on a 1962 Ford farm tractor to convert it from 6 to 12 volts. Works great.

In 1979 I had a 1974 Chevy Impala two-door Custom Coupe I think the color was like a Highland Green, Vinyl Hard Top in light green, the inside was light green with the Vinyl Interior seats came with plastic covers, power steering, power brakes, power windows, AM & FM Radio with an eight-track tape player, Air Conditioner. The only thing I didn't like about the Chevy Impala is that it never came with an armrest only the Caprice has the armrest Thank You for posting this commercial it brings back memories.

I had a 74 Vega GT hatchback that I bought used in 1978, and within 18 months the rust on the hatchback's hinges was showing; some body filler material was used as a stopgap measure. The car itself drove and handled well, where it cruised well on freeways/interstates; the four-speed manual had tall gears that didn't make for quick acceleration. The FM radio was a nice touch. The ventilation worked as well as described in the film. I bought the car from my brother, whom had earlier plans for putting a Chevy 350 engine in it, but he got into a financial jam and had to unload it. I was in need for an second economy car at the time. I was fully aware of the oil burning problem at the time, which was at 350 miles per quart of oil. A trick my brother did to compensate for the oil burning, so the spark plugs would not foul, was to put in the hottest spark plug range to be had; and advanced the engine's timing. The downside for doing that required for me to use premium gasoline. Things went downhill with the engine's oil consumption after a 2K miles roadtrip I took; where the oil usage went up to a quart per 200 miles. In the following year, at 60K miles, the clutch was slipping. If it wasn't for the engine burning oil, the rust, and slipping clutch, I would have not unloaded it in 1981.

The wonderful 1974 CHEVROLET VEGA. I bought one new. Couldn't get rid of it fast enough. After 8 months I traded up to a new 1974 Mazda 808 sport coupe. From Hell to Heaven in one swap. And like others here state the Vega was an - *Oil Burner* or maybe *Oil Bleeder* I did my own oil change once. It had one Pint(!) of oil in it after 2,500 miles!!!

Vegas, we had a few of them, my dad called them motorized trash cans. I personally loved the car but that was high school.

VEGA, LMFAO, when I was 19 I worked at a filling station in the mid 70's, a customer would come in and say 2 bucks [probably 6 gallons then] gas a give me 2 quarts of oil to put in--that's why they engineered the engine shutting off with low/no oil pressure, THEY KNEW IT WAS AN OIL BURNER

. Climate doesn't matter...Without liners inside the pistons prematurely scored/scarred the cylinder walls causing low compression and excessive oil consumption.

@JohnnyTyrone77 My sister had a 73, living in CT no Chevy dealers wanted anything to do with the issue. We found a Rhode Island dealer that replaced the engine with the fix Chevy came up with. She drove the car for awhile afterwards with no issue.

Another suburban myth story - - this garbage never ends. In fact An official total of 27 deaths was tied to the Pinto. While the NHTSA determined in 1974 that a recall was not merited. Ford issued their own recall. During that time, the car represented 1.9% of all "fatal accidents accompanied by some fire." This implies the Pinto was average for all cars and was considered average % wise. When all types of fatalities are considered, the Pinto was approximately even with the AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega, and Datsun 510. It was significantly better than the Datsun 1200/210, Toyota Corolla, and VW Beetle.

Very explanatory commercial that missing today. Excellent marketing from the past. Great American cars!!!!

Unfortunately the Vega suffered from failed engines, failed headgaskets, oil leaks, coolant leaks and the bodies would start to rust in the 1st year of ownership, it wasnt uncommon for the Vegas to have rust on the bodies on the showroom floors.

Parents had a 74 Caprice , 400v-8 . Man that car had a/c in the summer time when we went on vacations . Never felt a bump on the road .

I worked for 21 years at the GM plant that made A/C compressors,,,,until they sent the whole operation to Mexico/China in 2007. In 1974 GM made radial R-4 and A-6 axial compressors. Later we made the H-6,V-5,V-7 and the CVC6 and CVC7. These were much improved aluminum light weight compressors. For instance the US Army put 2 V-5s on their M2 Bradley fighting vehicles. When I started in 1985 we had 4,000 hourly workers, bu 2007 we had about 150, then NONE.

The no sleeve aluminum block was also good for Toyota and Datsun.

I like the looks of the ‘74-‘75 impalas because with the sport coupes you could roll down all 4 windows and I like the roofline

They were a great car if you were not BRANE dead. You just don't under any circumstances get it hot over 190. And don't use junk for oil. GM. F up with no coolant recovery tank and to small of a radiator. Wh

the Chevrolet ZL-1 427 was an aluminum block, but had cast-iron cylinder-liners inserted so no-problem there. Chevy knew better, but the Vega's aluminum-block had aluminum-cylinders and you cant do that. customers who kinda "revved-em up" new to hear the motor blew em-up right on the dealers lot...they also rusted-out on the lot, especially around the windshield.

Ah, the Vega...i attempted to drive a brand new one back in 1976 right off the dealer's lot. The engine shook like it had Parkinson's (no offence intended to those suffering witb this tragic illness) and no matter how slowly you let up on the clutch and with your foot welded to the floor, the car stalled in first gear before you got any forward movement...I ended up buying a nice little Toyota Celica hardtop instead. If I was smart I would have spent the extra money and bought either a Malibu Classic or Impala instead

I think you made the better choice.

I had a Vega GT once fully loaded w/ AC, cast iron sleeves, full instrument panel, 4 speed, black carpet w/white vinyl seats and red hatchback. When I first got it (for$500.00 in 82) I had to adjust the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder (thanks Chilton) and got rubber in 1st and 2nd gear. Before that it couldn't climb a steep incline street. Only 3 things I regret, one was the shift linkage would tangle occationally, the other was getting rid of it (for $500.00) and thirdly not putting a 350 ci w/a 14" or 15" inch rear end under it. But even now I know of one ready to restore in a field😉. Who knows.....maybe one day. And no, there's really not a rust problem in middle Texas.

The hydraulic clutch was a "conversion" Vegas originally had a cable actuated clutch.

A small block v8 was the only WORTHY power plant for the Vega.....the aluminum chunk was good for a boat anchor

And it’s wild that this same chassis was later used for the Chevy monza which had a 305 4bbl v8 as it’s “biggest” engine option

I SO miss the days when family cars actually sat the WHOLE family! That GM B-Body (Chevrolet Bel Air, Impala, Caprice Classic, Pontiac Catalina, Bonneville, Granville, Buick LeSabre and Oldsmobile Delta 88) was wonderfully big! And, notice how you didn't need airbags, active breaking, autonomous driving or backup cameras to get there safely back then? Just sayin'! 🚗! 🐰

I think people got used to driving such large cars, that is why they were able to drive them without trouble. I suspect that of someone was only driving compact cars before buying a full-size, they might have to re-train their mind in order to drive it. Also, I don't know how often people ranted about having to parallel park such large cars, but I heard it was common.

I guess my father got lucy, he had an orange kammback vega, never had any problems with it, hell i learned to drive with it wish i had it now. He had it about 10 years, fun little car, had nearly 200,000 on it when he got rid of it. The guy that has it now turned it into a drag car.

This is so cool to see for me, I own a 74 Impala Sport Coupe, have never seen any promotional film of this length before in the 20 years I've had one of them. Amusing they seemed to focus on the Sport Coupe in this. I only drive mine in the nice weather, but it's been a pleasure to own requiring very little, very reliable. I wish the Impala and Vega films were split up! Haha

My parents bought a new 74 Vega GT hatch back in orange black interior with A/C & automatic & am/fm radio and they payed Sondag Chevrolet In Desplaines Illinois to send the car over to Ziebart to rust proof that sporty little go getter I think they got a good extra 2 years beauty out of that car but by 78 that Vega looked crappy rust and falling apart and yes they washed it all the time and did hand car wax twice a year and did oil changes all the time still that engine was done at around 65,000 miles they bought that car because of the style and they thought it was more well built and drove better then the Ford Pinto and Mercury Bobcat and the infamous VW Beetle and the Honda Civic and some kind of Opel at Buick I don’t recall I was just a kid in those days but I knew my Cars & Trucks

I still have to admit that we were far better with land yachts than we would ever be with tugboats!

Wish I still had my 73 Caprice coupe, maybe in convertible form though....Loved that car

My dad knew a few people with the Vega. The coating of the aluminum bores would wear off quickly. As a result, the engines would lose compression and burn oil way too soon. I think this was another car that sold more Datsuns and Toyotas than any advertisement Datsun or Toyota ever made. 3:20 these cars would develop an electrical problem because of the device that stopped fuel flow when oil pressure is low. It would create a cranking no-start situation, and unless you had the proper electrical schematic, you couldn't do anything about it. 4:20 What wasn't covered by that ugly fake wood during the 1970s? 9:35 My dad originally had bias ply tires on his 1971 Toyota Corolla, and when he installed Pirelli radials, it made everything about that car better. He said that there was one extremely bumpy road on the way to his job, and it always upset the balance of the car. He thought he would lose control. Once he had the Pirelli radials, it was easy for him to cross that road. 10:25 Many people called those "5 MPH bumpers" because they prevented all damage at 5 MPH or lower. It is my understanding that many cars imported into the USA ended up with really ugly bumpers to meet that requirement. The USA may have gotten better looking bumpers as time passed and foreign car sales increased.

Makes me miss my 75 Vega hatchback. My first car, paid for it myself! Yes, it was a piece of crap, but the fold down back seats were great for “parking” and it got me back and forth to college.

That tunnel is where they filmed the movie Duel in 1971 with Dennis Weaver being terrorized by the maniac PeterBilt tanker driver

That Vega engine was the worst. It had an odd shaped cast head and the cam shaft pushed directly on these huge tappets that were so loud. It got so hot that the heads would crack after about 12k miles (my dad worked on these).

My Girl That engine was Nicknamed the Iron Duke because of its reliability, dad must have just bumped into a few that where problematic, that engine was used for a long time, I was a GM mechanic.

Patrick Nesbitt you’re correct. The Iron Duke introduced for ‘77 and beyond was an old-school iron block 2.5 liter OHV four cylinder. GM found itself in a real pickle when the more clever but highly problematic aluminum-alloy 2.3 SOHC Vega motor nearly knocked the company right out of the subcompact market. They had to make an engine that didn’t leave customers guessing “is today the day all the oil leaks out?” . The Duke was heavy, agricultural, and hated to rev, but at least it fairly reliable.

Keith Allen, Oh, Very good, I owned a 74 and was clueless about the previous engine you speak of, I do remember learning all about how the aluminum head and iron block corroded due to electrolysis, I'm going to have to look for some videos on that 2.3.

@@kcindc5539 Actually with 3k oil changes the Duke would easily make 150k miles. They still use them in those old AM General postal vehicles. AMC used them through the 80's in the Eagle and some Jeep Cherokees.

My brother has a vega wagon he pulled the motor and trans years ago. Was gonna put a 283 in it. He got married and moved off. It still sits at my mom's. Straight body all glass is good. Both bumpers straight. Not sure about the floor pans as it has sat for so long. I wish I had to extra funds to fix it up. He offered it to me a few yrs ago. Said he still has the title somewhere.

We took a 1976 Vega home from the dealer while our new car was being prepped and I drove the standard shift just around the neighborhood for about an hr and the Aluminum engine got so hot it shut down. I let it cool for about 30 min and it restarted. That was the last year of the Vega.

The last year of the Chevrolet Vega was 1977.

I had a Vega. Burned so much oil, cost a lot to drive. A friend had so much rust on the floor it had to be junked.

I had one too. I bought a 74 GT used in late 75 and had the same problems. When I pulled the head I found the aluminum block had aluminum cylinder walls, no liners, no discernable coating and the body rusted out everywhere.

@@TheBandit7613 Porsche also uses aluminum block engines, but they treated the cylinder walls. GM didn't because it would cost too much. Some models also had an aluminum block and iron pistons. With lined cylinder walls this works. But, again, GM didn't want to spend the money. The pistons would heat and expand too much for the cylinder. This would gouge out an area around it allowing oil to get passed it. Not uncommon in older cars. I remember many cars from the '70s/'80's that smoked when you started them. But the Vega engines started having this problem within the first year or two of ownership.

A sensor cuts off Vega fuel supply if the oil pressure gets too low. That feature saved Chevy some money on warranty repairs. The engine burned LOTS of oil. But it couldn't sieze due to because it shut off just as the lack of oil caused pressure to drop.

They had the 153 iron four cylinder on the shelf. Why on earth didn’t they use it?!?

Keep them coming!

Vega could have been a nice car if it had rustproofing and a different engine.

Those Chevy Impalas held their value for quite some time. I remember back in the 1980s, that a 1973 Impala was still out of the price range of a lot of folks. And that was when they were 10 year old cars!

@@onepalproductions Safety is one step at a time. They had just convinced people to stop spraying asbestos all over their Christmas trees to give it that white Christmas look. I think they had also recently outlawed glass clackers. Two glass balls on a string you banged together. (Yes, even toys could hospitalize you.) Keep them healthy enough at home to go out and buy a car. Then we'll inform them that it's a deathtrap.

I wonder why they described the Impala 4dr hardtop as "the four-door sedan" (not "Sport Sedan" which was Chevy's usual name for a 4D HT) and didn't show a post sedan at all. It had a new roofline that year, maybe that happened late enough they didn't have one available for filming?

I'll take a Vega GT hatchback sand an Impala Custom 2 door please.

No need to worry about the Vaga rusting out! the never lasted more than a year!

I sure hope the Vega rode smoother than the Pinto, which felt like it had no springs, shocks, or anything but wheels mounted directly on the frame, making one wonder how it could be steered.

The Vega was economical to drive especially after the engine tanked on the highway .

11:41- Those close up shots they use of the A/C unit and radio are from a mid-size Chevelle, not a full-size Impala ;-)

Having owned a "72 chevelle, the a/c control is "high" on the dash, just below two a/c vents. The a/c control for the impala is to the left of the driver low in the dash. I do believe the actual control for the a/c may be the same. I'm not aware of a chevelle with the "wood grain" dash. The delco radio / tape player is also different in each model.

​@@tallboots1 Well... this is a promo for 1974 Chevrolets... so how exactly would a 1972 Chevelle be comparable? A 1972 Chevelle is a completely different car than a 1973-1977 Chevelle... completely. What is shown is exactly what I said it was. 1973-77 Chevelle A/C unit and radio. Could possibly be a 1973-1977 Monte Carlo dash also (same exact dash as Chevelle). You can kind of see the 2 round gauges directly above the A/C control panel. That is a 1973-1977 Chevy A-Body dash feature. There is no 1971-1976 Chevy Caprice or Impala with gauges like that. I’ve owned many 71-76 Caprice/Impalas and many 73-77 Chevelles/Lagunas/Malibus etc... and parted out countless others... I know these cars fairly well. Not to mention when they show that stuff in the video the 2 shots of the Chevelle dash shows a tan interior and when they cut back to the actual Caprice interior its red.

@@tallboots1 I can be even more technical... this is an Impala promo, not Caprice. That red interior shown in the video after they show the Chevelle A/C and radio is a Caprice interior, not Impala.

@@Ryan-cx2tg Since the year of the chevelle you referenced in your comment was not stated, I concede a '73 or newer chevelle may have that a/c unit, or control. I owned a 72 chevelle and the location statement I made is accurate. It could be we are debating "apples and oranges" since the title of the video gives the years anyway.

@@tallboots1 I guess I just assumed we were on the same page of what year Chevelle I was referencing, due to the video being about 1974 Chevys. I have no doubt that you are correct with your statements about the 72. But remember, the 72 Chevelle dash was not the same as a 1969 Chevelle dash either... so implying that the 73-77 Chevelle dash in the video can’t be a Chevelle dash strictly because it doesn’t look like the 72 dash you remember doesn’t really prove much... I could’ve been talking about a 67 Chevelle... or 69... neither one would be similar to a 72 dash anymore than a 1973 dash would be.

Have people done a small block v8 swap into the Vega? Would a 350 fit under the hood? Would be a great fix for this issue.

Many people.

The Vega was not dipped in a rust prevention solution. They were dipped in rust. These things started dissolving straight from the factory.

It was later discovered that someone switched the rust prevention solution with salt water.

Um...just like all the other cars of the time frame ? Chrysler, Ford, Datsun, Toyota and Honda all on the factory floor back then.

The voiceover in the 1974 Impala Promotional Film sounds like Ernie Anderson, but I am unsure it's him.

Engine was as durable as a wet potato chip!

To bad the Vega was such a troublesome car. It had so potential. GM screwed the pooch on that one. The Impala was a good car. Never cared for the Impala in the middle. The sport coupe and the 4 door hard that the announcer said was a sedan(they didn't show the 4 door sedan) were great looking cars. When the Impala was driving through the tunnel I noticed that it was the same tunnel that was used in the movie Duel. Where the Impala came out, the school bus would have been on the right just before the entrance going the opposite direction. They filmed a lot of commercials in that part of Los Angeles county back then.

They things a little after leaving the factory would drink oil like its the end of the world

The Impala was too big by that time...I would have preferred a 1974 Malibu Classic Coupe with a 350 V-8.

The impala in the video doesn't look right without the 30 in rims and snickers livery on it

what 10 yo kid didnt want to climb in the back of the Vega hb or kamback wagon with the rear seat folded down I thought they where cool looking cars if was I was 16 in 1974 id want one for my first car please dad

That Vega was a swing and a miss. That aluminum motor was a joke. My aunt had a 73 no option stripper it spent more time at the chevy service department than on the road total P O S .

growing up these cars were like rats they were everywhere.guys would get these and squish a v8 in them making them the poor mans corvette

7:47- The narrator says ‘Impala Sedan’... which is WRONG. That is not a 4dr sedan, its a 4dr HARDTOP. Sedan’s had a post between the front and rear doors and the door glass was surrounded by metal. When a hardtop has all the windows rolled up, all you see is glass, which is what this car in the video is, a HARDTOP.

The offical Chevrolet nomenclature for the 4 door hardtop was Sport Sedan...from the 50s through 1976 when it was dropped

Last year of the 2 Dr. hardtop custom coup was 73 my dad bought one brand new from the factory but it rusted out the first MN. winter.

I also noticed this blue Impala hardtop was oddly equipped in that it is lacking air conditioning, possibly a radio too, but has cruise control...
