1974 Cadillac Coupe DeVille inspection and road test

Nice car we got out of an estate. Great to find cars like this that are well cared for. Thank You to the former owner that kept this Cadillac Like NEW! We promise to continue the care as long as we are able to do so.

74 was a beautiful model, before the square headlamps. Growing up, my neighbor had one in Jasper Green, w matching green leather. Beautiful car

What a wonderful car! I wish cars were made with this kind of room today, I'm a big guy and I would feel right at home in a vehicle like this!

I've gotten lucky on E-bay the early this year in 2021 and I have purchased myself a 1974 Cadillac Coupe DeVille from a used car dealer in Cleveland OH, Who have gotten it from a "Barn Find" The miles on it are the actual 95K, it came with a 472cui. and the body is rust free, and the interior is immaculate. I love this Caddi and I will be putting some investment into it like new Coker spoke and Vogue's tyre..

I really do like this car. I can't quite work out if that's gold or what, but I could definitely Live with it... And ride in Style. Very sleek (and majestic) auto, thanks for posting.

I'm a subscriber. I truly enjoy listening to you, and of course the video content. Regarding your having mentioned cars like this not being made anymore and having lost our craftsmanship and quality... True, however, we no longer know what comfort is. We have given that up to "handling" to such a degree that now anything comfortable such as this beautiful Cadillac costs a fortune. As you know, it used to be that most cars were built to be reasonably comfortable. Luxury, is no longer luxury either. We have fallen to level of thinking leather seats and technology are luxury while they are not. Thank you for the great videos!

I had 69 Coupe triple black car 472 engine I got 8 miles to the gallon city and highway. I started driving in the 80's and I bought the car with 60,000 miles the car was a very nice driver ran perfect had very little surface rust I paid 700 bucks for the car put 40,000 miles and sold it for 700 those were the days

Exactly the kind of car I love, clean and all original! They don't make 'em like that anymore because they got 12 MPH on the highway, but it was the last of the big, uncompromised Cadillacs with big engines--ten years later they'd have a 125 HP cubic inch engine in place of the 472 (500 beginning in '75). I had a chance to buy a comparably clean '76 Coupe in the early 90's from the original owner's grandson for $2,500. I didn't need another car so I turned it down. Referred it to a good friend of mine who bought it. As I followed him back to Dallas, I was horrified to realize the car was crab-walking and had a bent frame, although it looked and drove perfectly. While he owned it, he commented that he'd found some evidence of body work under the car he hadn't expected. He kept it for three or four years, then sold it--I didn't tell him until then that I'd found out from friends of his family, that old man Holacek, who had been mayor of West, Texas at the time, got a good deal on it new because it had fallen off a car carrier and the dealership had rebuilt it! Glad I passed on it!

What are you talking about with regard to the highway MPG?......my pristine 1974 Coupe Deville(472 carb)gets 18-19MPG on road trips.....my pop's (he bought new) 1976 fuel injected Coupe Deville gets 21-22 on the highway..............around town putt-putt wise.................12-14 at best on either vehicle.

Quite easily if the engine was put together right when new (virtually zero compression loss through valves seats/ piston rings) and engine cam timing was set dead-on.......which means the carb idle richness screws can be turned down to a 450-500rpm idle. Fuel injected versions can be idled-down by popping off the steel plug on the throttle-body. And both my pops/mine were ordered with optional higher-ratio rear-end gears along with limited-slip............with tires(then) the size of todays full size SUV/pickup diameter tires......act like an overdrive.

Well the only ratios available in 1976 were 2.73 or 3.15--Cadillac never offered a 2.56 axle ratio. But to believe a 472/500 could ever achieve 20 or 21 MPG on the highway or 12-13 MPG in town under any circumstances, they'd have to be fudging the fill-ups. A local resident once wrote a letter to the editor about how he couldn't understand why today's cars couldn't get better mileage because he remembered his father telling him how his '54 Packard Patrician with Ultramatic could get 20 MPG on the highway and 17 in town. We know those cars and it's utterly impossible, only wishful thinking. But they're still great cars in the bargain!

Actually it's not that difficult......don't forget the Factory tire-pressure sticker states the pressure should be in the Low 20psi (s) which adds a massive amount of drag. I put nearly 40psi in mine (slight degradation in ride),current white walls on my 74 can be safely taken to 55psi...............higher the psi............lower rolling resistance/drag. And if you lean-out a engine (even a Big Block), acceptable mpg is possible with light throttle inputs. Can I achieve 7-9 mpg on my 74? surely, if I mash the throttle everytime and take the tires down to 23-24 psi.

74 was unique in many ways - interior sew lines, silver band across the woodgrain dash. While the padded tops looked great they sure caused a lot of rust. I knew a guy who bought a new '75 Coupe de Ville without a vynil top and it looked very strange, so they were what we were accustomed to in the era.

Had that coupe in 75, it was a year old trade in and I worked for the dealer in late 73 doing new car service. my Caddy was the best riding car I ever had. it was quick for the weight and I got 16 mpg which was better than my 74 Monte Carlo at 10 mpg. I just might get another one if could find one in this kind of condition.

Is that a 2 position switch or 3 position switch on the dash for the cruise control? I do recall that in 1977 it was a 3 position switch, but not sure what year it went from 2 position to 3 position.

I'll say that's 33,000, not 133,000 or more. Cars of that time don't look that way with 133 or 233 or whatever. They just did not hold up like they do now...

The standup hood ornament, as well as the wreath-and-crest emblems on the vinyl roof, would not be original or “correct” on a 1974 Coupe deVille.

  • @johnlouis5751

Not sure about the Vinyl roof, but the standup hood ornament is certainly original.

  • @Ctrl-XYZ

@@johnlouis5751 Incorrect. The wreath-and-crest ornament would be correct /original only on the Fleetwood Brougham or Eldorado. 1974 DeVilles did have a stand-up ornament, but it was the "skeleton" Cadillac crest. Cars that had that ornament did not have the Cadillac V-and-crest on the hood. No Cadillac left the factory with both a stand-up ornament and a hood ornament under it.

You are so wright about what you say in this viedo ..im looking at a 75 coupe a little ruough with the body and it onlu has 75,000 originalmiles under the hood I noticed the heater hose by the firewall has a vacuum connector that has started to rust and also notice some leakage by the I guess you would call the master cylinder by the firewall other than that the cracking on the rear fillers are starting to miss pieces I just need to go test drive it now they're asking 1300 no one else will give them over 2,000 and so I'm asking you what do you think is it worth it it's white with cloth interior the only wearing on the cloth interior is a driver side by the edge like you said where people slide out other than that car looks fine just need to drive it let me know what you think I'll get back to you with the comment when I drive the car thank you..
