1972 Cadillac Fleetwood Walk around and road test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Nice Cadillacs are still out there. Not all of them have been sent out of the country! This one is a great road car. Roomy, Very solid road feel. Yes, Cadillac "The Standard of the World" was still quite true in '72.

For my generation, the 70's were the pinnacle for Cadillac & basically the whole GM's line-up.....the automobiles were big, beautiful pieces of designed creativity for almost every vehicle produced from the late 60's THRU the mid-to late 70's......

Beautiful! The '72s are what I think of as the last "real" cars, that includes all US makes and models... After 72, the manufacturers were forced to start adding more and more to 'em-( 5 mph bumpers, smog equipment, etc..) and in my opinion, our cars started looking more and more ungainly. Overly complicated technically, too! Cheers!

One of my Top 10 favorite cars of all time! One of the Top 5 most attractive Cadillacs in my opinion. My Pap had a '71 model when I was a child in the early-mid '70's. I am most definitely NOT a muscle car fan. Give me big, luxurious barge like vehicles ANY DAY over speed, sound... 1971-72 (not '73... didn't like the trunk and front bumper/headlight design), 1989-93, 1997-99 Deville's, Fleetwood, and the '93-96 Brougham, the '92-96/97 Seville and Eldorado (and STS/ETC)(both pre-refresh), `80-85 Sevilles are all in my top Caddy designs. I am not an SUV/CUV fella either, but I really like the 2007-19 (third and fourth gen) Escalade. They kind of tickle my loins, too. Now if only GM would build a retro-inspired, V8, rear drive Fleetwood Brougham, life would be grand. I would even give the Escala concept car a chance! But for the love of all that is right and good in the world, no more 4 cylinder engines...

We had a dark brown 72 Fleetwood Brougham with brown leather interior, 60/40 dual power seats! Fantastic car with every option available except a sun roof, ours also had the power trunk pull down which this car doesn’t appear to have. I liked the panel separating the doors which they only had in 72, looked more “limousine like” to me.

  • @thomasshort1784

@Ken Kw It sounds like it was Russet Firemist Metallic (order code=99), a $128.00 option, with Antique Dark Saddle leather (order code=085), a $169.00 option. A little trivia, that panel between the doors was standard on BOTH the '71 and '72 Fleetwood Brougham AND Fleetwood Seventy-Fives! The aforementioned color combination, along with the Dark Brown vinyl roof (order code=R), is, in my opinion, one of the best looking from that year. I'm curious, what happened to it and assuming it had the vinyl roof (although rare, I also know one could be special ordered without it), what color was it?

There's a lot of nice 70s Caddys out there... They ride like a dream. Back then there were only a couple choices for an American high-end luxury car- Cadillac and Lincoln. Also, everyone could not get financed to the gills on a luxury car at like you can now, so folks who bought them generally had more money and took good care of them, or kept them in the garage and used them as a weekend driver...

This Fleetwood Brougham's color combination appears to be (and I'm pretty confident of the accuracy!): Ice Blue Firemist Metallic paint (order code=90 and a $128.00 option; I'm also aware of the aforementioned repaint but, it looks VERY close to the original!) with Dark Blue (I thought it was black upon first glance!) vinyl roof (order code=L; standard on the Fleetwood Brougham BUT, could also be deleted upon special order!) and Dark Blue leather upholstery (order code=066 and a $169.00 option). In my opinion, while I don't hate the Ice Blue Firemist color, if I'd ordered it new, I would have probably chosen the St. Moritz Blue Firemist Metallic (order code=92; also $128.00 extra) with that vinyl roof and upholstery combination. The St. Moritz Blue Firemist has a similar color value (more like a bright, deeper blue as opposed to a dark navy hue) as the Dark Blue leather option.

...Back in the mid 80s, I dated a lady who drove one of these..A little bit darker blue on the exterior...About the same shade blue as the interior on this one... Interior on hers was black...I'm not sure if the exterior had been a custom color choice of the original owner or not... She was never sure either, as she was the third owner when she got it, and it was kind of already on the beat-up side...The woman was tall and slightly stocky, so she liked being able to stretch out in big old Caddies and Buicks from the early/mid 70s... This had been one she got after a sleeper '75 LeSabre she had driven into the ground ... With that particular car, the body was crap, but when you lifted the hood, it was a totally different story... She left the Caddy as it was however, and just wound up driving it into the ground as well... Had a good smooth ride...Built like a tank and quite roomy inside...

This era fleetwood has the big B pillar, the devilles and calais didn't. They were 4-door hardtops. That extra b-pillar width showed up in longer wheelbase and more rear legroom. Originally Feetwoods (60-special Broughams, Eldos and the 75-limo)would have the wreath around the crest, lesser caddies have the stylized V under the crest. Alas, all too soon the fleetwood became just a trim option on the same deville body/wheelbase.

The spacer was because the Fleetwood Broughams were a few inches longer than the Sedan DeVilles & Caddy used the same front door for both models, but the spacer look cheap. These cars are still reasonably affordable. 70s cars were probably the biggest and most comfortable. 80s American sucked, 60s was what early 70s improved on, 50s iconic, 40s Gangster, 30s Classy, 20s Wildcatter, 10s a horse was better!

Jack Gentry only the Eldorado had the standing hood ornament until 1974 when DeVille and Calais were fitted with the new "see thru" chrome crest.

Mine had a chrome hood cap on it, with the flying lady. It was a 73 fleetwood brougham d’elegance. That cap made the hood want to slam shut. I traded it for the correct hood ornament. Nothing like being attacked by the hood of one of these things, while your under it. 🤣

A very long time ago now, I owned a 1973 Coupe De Ville. It was very old and the speedometer did not work. The paint had several different shades of blue. Parts of the body had been patched, in the back. For all its imperfections, I can say that no other car made me as happy. I loved the long hood, the whole car. Today's cars are aerodynamic, logical, smaller and sensible. How very boring, they are also politically correct and concerned about their carbon footprint. Not very poetic, are they

I think it's funny, looking at the size of a regular Sedan DeVillle, close to 24 ft long. Then to think the Fleetwoods came in extended wheel base? Was that really necessary? 😒

  • @martinvon9973

Yes, it was. And BTW, the DeVille was far from 24 feet long ! Check your facts.

  • @DavidPysnik

Yes. The huge cars of those days didn't put all of that size into the cabin. The interior of a 70s DeVille was indeed large, but the downsized big Caddies of the 80s and 90s often had interiors that were very nearly as large. The 70s Fleetwood interior, by comparison, wins in the size department hands down and everything that came after was inferior. If you really want the true, grand excess that was Cadillac, then that extended wheel base is totally and completely necessary.

Well, that makes sense since the Fleetwood was the pinnacle of the Cadillac line (although some people say that about the El Dorado). I had a 1964 Sedan deVille and it had the "Body by Fisher" emblem that was visible with the doors open.

Back in the day GM bought up The Fisher body company along with Fleetwood. Chrysler bought Briggs and Le Baron and so went the small custom companies . I'm not sure whether GM bought them put or not but in the '50s Buick and Oldsmobile station wagon bodies were built by Ionia and trucked across town to be assembled

@@1VaDude in 1972 Eldorados were still Fleetwoods. Cadillac made 2 Fleetwoods, the Fleetwood Brougham & Fleetwood Eldorado. I think in 1974 Cadillac dropped the Fleetwood designation from the Eldorado name.

Beautiful car, but the engine clunks so bad. I know it's old, but it shouldn't be that loud. The engine doesn't have that beautiful signature crank shaft sound like a healthier motor should.
