1973 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser - What Should We Do With It!

We added this '73 FJ40 project to our ranch in August 2023. In this video, we're looking at the vehicle and all the goodies that came with the project, trying to decide what to do first.

The rust looks like it could be from sitting in a high desert uncovered. Filled with snow in the winter and burned in the sun all summer.

You nailed it. It was in the high desert for a long time in its recent years. Thanks for the input!

How far have you gotten ? Ive been into LC's for 50 years and done just about everything to them and aground up is a year at least 6 hrs a day . Put a toyota 4 speed and split tcase from a wagon in bellhousing and fly wheel too it all inter changes tunnel holes for sticks opened up just a little . Spring over or stock with spring lift --see specter off-road for basic repair and service manual for chassis ONLY !!!

Most of the engine is back together. Waiting on a few parts. Should have a start attempt within a couple weeks.

Those front shackles look like homemade shackle guards made out of some military wrap spring ends. Welded on, looks like a pretty good idea for hard rock wheeling. BTW, if that 2F motor runs good and you want to sell it, my son might be interested. He's got my old 1969 FJ that could use an engine rebuild. When I gave him the truck, I also bought a 2F with the transfer case and 4 speed for him to swap in. Bought it off a guy in Sacramento who was putting a diesel in his, so I got to drive it around first. It was perfect. Came with the 4sp and transfer case. Unfortunately, the storage garage where my son had it and all his other prized possessions stored was broken into and everything was stolen. I mean everything. Tools, furniture, vintage stereo, his surfboard collection (about 15 of them), bobber motorcycle, etc. They must have had a Uhaul and some muscle to lift all that stuff. Big bummer. That was in Riverside Calif. Fortunately the FJ and most it's other parts were in another storage facility. Here's what it looked like when I was driving it, and the last picture is it loaded on a trailer bound for Riverside. I sure miss it. Did I mention I only paid $2K for the truck? Back just before they came into high demand. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIaHp9uuY93Pe9o.html

Wow. So sorry about the theft. That really sucks. I won't know what I'm doing with the 2F until I try to get the F running. Thanks for the input on the shackles. That sounds like a good possibility. Your 69 looks great! My first FJ40 was a 66 that I got in 1974 when I was 17!

Hey, sounds like me! Got 1965 in 1976 when ,I was 19; what was not sentimental, got first parts from Manafre(,starter,, shifter) while in hospital after surgery. Know they put you in wheelchair, all the way to parking lot. When I got up with heavybox, almost fell over! 48 years later, spent 2 weeks same hospital ( plus 2 weeks post acute care) but in wheelchair month before, 7 weeks and counting w.c. user Jan 2024! Yikes, Good news: still use same starter! Purists will bitch, by 1979, not many 1965 parts left, no thanks, block was sorta okay, cyl heads junk! Okay, 2F is smogeng I had 73 block bored 1.mm( .40 over) Guess what? Those pistons are domed, 73/74 only, used 68 head, small chamber.. [ secret info ] F*** me to tears, F eng. ran like V8, still have same pistons F eng. as I type, my FJ has at least 210 hp! Torque/ hp dyno lines parallel, best 6 cyl EVER. Lock plates everywhere, cotter pins rods I will send picks, totalled 3 times, owning 1 LC good enough for me, the f***ing CA. tags say '92, non-op! Hey still worth what it cost= $900! F*** your new FJ-40 (74 - 82) 4 spd., leave it in garage 'cuz it is restored, NO, NO, NO, beat the s*** out it, pound it to death, roll it, FJ-40 BEST 4WD EVER! [ LAST vehicles on earth, aliens want mine!!

Doing a similar project on my new channel @josesgaraje know a far amount about Toyota 40 series, run one everyday all year. On this ones crankshaft end the front main engine seal is in the timing gear housing and seals the surface just behind the crankshaft nut threads and before the oil slinger. That surface doesn't appear to me to be usable for the seal unless you put in lots of resources. If you need info, tips or other throw me a line. Have subscribed and liked.

Spend first few days under it with a tape measure and notebook then the top side does it have four drums or disks and drums do you change over that means master too all LC parts interchange knuckle assemblys to fj 60 s will fit fj 40 axel housings change inner shafts and replace .

@@RanchoCoyote If you want to change there's two ways there's a kit that you pull the knuckles apart loose the splash plate and wheel cylinders a disk brake bracket goes on and Wilwood calipers are used rotors are slip on, pull out check valve on stock master cylinder front chamber . OR find early 80s fj 60 axel and gut it complete knuckles will interchange part time hubs may interchange as spare parts fine splines interchange inner shafts must swap wider housing on 60 more later . Depending on shop tools and cool stuff bigger head ach swap both axels BUT ! They only have 3:74 gears. If you want turn leaves 180 and get almost 10" more inch wheelbase equals smoother ride and climbs better too . There are toy LC groups that will support and a few beers help with ugly stuff too ....

Thanks for all the great information! Not sure what the future holds. First goal is to get it running and driving. Then I'll know what I'm dealing with. Also need to do the clutch and rear brakes on my '70. Also can't wait to get the '68 running as well.

@@RanchoCoyote Ask the guy you bought it from about motors there's a reason he had a spare motor . The one in frame maybe an 800lb boat anchor. And yes that's close on true weight / the same as a Rat motor - 454 Chevy big block . Advance Adapters is another fav phone number to speed dial list a Chevy sm 465 gives you a crawler granny gear and a three speed for the hiway - 6:50 granny 3:50 second if you want an adapter plate for stock motor and bell housing 3/4 inch thick will let you put the 465 tranny on Toyota but use 11" chevy clutch disk that matches input splines and works in toy clutch assembly ..
