I inherited 6 complete honda xl175 bikes and 2 incomplete parts bikes ranging from 1973 to 1975 they had all spent the last 20 years in a barn I was given the titles to every one of them, after several months I finished restoring one and it was orange/black,i was so proud it looked like it just came off of the showroom floor,I rode it to work a couple weeks later and someone stole it so I just started restoring a 2nd one now and its red/black

What i did to a kickstart once was drill a hole through it and the shaft and used a cement nail through it to hold it together. Worked like a charm!

Man, I've been working on my 30 year old Quadrunner and making progress, building confidence, but this video is making want to just tear into our '78 XL175. Except for the part where you welded the kickstart on :D My brother already did that, and I was gonna be like 'no, see, we can take it apart and fix it right' but I can't now because he'll just be like 'See!!!' :D

In 1982 when I was 15, I bought a 1976 xl175, my first bike. On the second day I broke the kick start shaft!! My dad fixed it with a new shaft as they were readily available then. I think your fix was the best option, I just hope it holds. I had many great times on my old bike. I remember flogging some fuel out of my dads shed, but wondered what was wrong a few miles down the road. They don’t run too well in diesel. Cheers for the series.

I am trying to fix a 1973 suzuki ts100 dual sport. Your videos have really inspired me because my bike is not in nearly as bad of condition as yours lol. It has good compression and the kickstart still works. So I am hoping to have it running by summers end. Keep the good videos coming!!!

@@Scrivscribe As a matter of fact I've got a shabby 1976 XL125 (I had one in 1977) waiting in the que for restoration. I remember keeping a bike on the road on a tight budget but don't be discouraged. Keep practicing, keep learning.

No, it is not, the engine was already open, any mechanical turner would make a shaft of this whole new one, since it should not be easy to buy another due to the age of the bike, summing up, shitting and sitting on top.

Nice to see it getting closer. You're not the first one to weld the kick start pedal to the shaft. Those things were notoriously soft and so easily started to slip on the splines.

  • @_zzpza

Looked like the splines on the shaft were screwed, so I don't think you damaged it any more than it already was when you welded it. Ideally the shaft needs to be replaced, which would mean cracking open the casing again, so you went with one of the few options you had left without needing a new part and another tear down. My only advice would be to regularly inspect the weld, you don't want it to come off and strand you somewhere, but I guess you could always bump start it if it does.

The first one was perfect i would have just heated it up and shaped it to not bumped the exhaust pipe, i hate it when people weld stuff on that is supposed to be removable i got a bike that the magnito was welded on to the cranked shaft took me 8 hour to remove it and it screwed up the timing but well done non the less

Aaaarrgghh!! I’m biting my knuckles watching you weld the lever on when as far as I know you haven’t checked the crankshaft bearings or the big end for play. What if you need to open the engine case up again?!! Does the bike even have new piston rings yet?? (I’ve made plenty of mistakes so I’m imagining the worst...)

Take the broken parts to a decent machine shop, theyll spark erode splines on a new shaft and should charge you a hell of a lot less than 500 dollars! I had one and a spare made for my benelli 650 tornado.
