1973 Honda XL175 Restoration - Part 4 - FRESH PARTS!!!

Ойын-сауық

Gday Scrivscribers! This episode I slog it out and put in the hard yards. Cleaning, polishing, rust removal - you see it all.
Like I've said before, I'm no expert! I'm just a dude having a crack at new things. If you have any advice I'm all ears but please shove your criticism up your exhaust pipe.

    I clicked " Like " , only because I have a 1972 CB 175 twin cylinder Honda that I will restore soon . Just restored a Honda Aero 80 cc Scooter . Also just to piss off your Mom . Now you own a classic Jap DirtBike that will always run and not depreciate if you maintain it properly . Those early seventies Hondas are indestructible. Something about those old Japanese Bikes that's magic but still prefer my 1976 175 TNT Can-AM with Rotax engine. Everyone should have a chance to strip down an old classic and rebuild it . A great feeling when you finish. : Way to get your hands dirty and a good 1st build . You saved a bikes life and we bike lovers thank you.

    Great series Mate! I just acquired a 1973 xl175. Not nearly as rough as what you started with, so we m encouraged to see what you were able to accomplish! Strong work!

    Here's a tip.. When your putting on handlebar grips, spray them inside with hairspray. They slide on real easy and when the hairspray drys out it glues them on. The spray only takes 5 minutes to dry. As for your filter. Use one of your lasses nylon stockings as it is very fine for filtering but has no restriction of air flow. What you did will restrict the air flow and run lean . IE hot. 😢

    Just did several of these projects on my 75 XL250 within the last 2 weeks. I looked everywhere for foam to make a filter element like you did, but couldn't find any that was dense enough for my liking and splurged on a $38 factory element from ebay. It hurt to spend that much on foam, but it was an actual, made in Japan, Honda filter element, so I didn't complain too much. So excited to hear yours running! Keep up the great work!

    Oh, and my Factory Owner's Manual actually recommends 80-90 Gear Oil for the air filter, for whatever that's worth.

    With a new chain it's a good idea to clean off the anti-corrosion grease it comes covered with and lube it up with your own chain lubricant. Also, compressed air slips your handle grips on and off like butter! A flexible tipped air fitting is best for shooting the air in between the bar and grip. It really is amazing.

    great progress on this orange beast. I am totally with you on the problems getting the RIGHT parts to fit. Seems there are plenty of folks out there who just say the part is for the bike - so worth finding some reliable sources. There are a lot of these older Hondas in the US, so parts are actually generally available from there, but they cost a bit in postage ....... if you are in Australia that is. Anyway great work Josh - hope you get the 25k views!! and the bike finished!!

    Next time, use some sort of spray degreaser for the grips. Spray some on the handlebars and pop them on. They will go in instantly and they will form a tight seal on the bars and won't move at all. Goog luck!

  • @rickwilshaw4005
    @rickwilshaw40055 жыл бұрын

    The air filter was only rotted apart like that cuz it's been so many years your supposed to clean your filter every few rides and you will notice it deteriorating long before it gets to that stage and the oil in the phone is for catching sand and dirt so the air that goes into the carburetor is clean

    engine oil on the filters a fine substitute (short term), It'll cause soot build up on the plug but at the same time give the piston more lubrication and cause less cylinder and ring wear. The big down side is with a valve type engine is it'll cause hot spots on the valve sealing surface where it meets the valve seat. Thats why 2 strokes can get away with running oil through the engine they don't have valves.

    20w-50 can be used as foam filter oil half the bike manuals used to call for it before they slapped some dye in oil and labeled it foam filter oil for the chrome bars you can pronounce it "metal polish" lol supercheap sells that shit, most people call it autosol

    Be careful with that handlebar kill switch. I have a 1978 honda ct90 with the same exact same handlebar kill switch. They have a problem with going out very easily, so dont use it unless you have to. When mine went out, I had to just bypass it because they are EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND.

    Great vids but learn to take it easy with how thick you are applying your silicone. On that intake manifold you layed it on so thick that on the inside of the manifold it will squeeze out so far and get sucked up into your engine. Just want to give you a heads up is all. Ive seen that stuff cause havoc if applied to thick.
