Brian Moore was by far the best football commentator this country produced, worth watching for that alone. That Montgomery second save is on a par with Banksy's save against Pele, Lorimer had the goal at his mercy and not only did he get his hand to it but actually kept it out. Brother was a Leeds fan so got a lifetime of millage out of that result.

This game was fantastic. The old stadium looks so much bigger than the new one on TV. The new stadium is unbelievable but sadly on TV it looks nothing in comparison. The 'Prawn Sandwich Brigade' are allocated the bank of seats directly in front of the camera and therefore the whole event loses its feeling of occasion due to it looking empty for 75% of the game. Even if Brazil were playing England in the World Cup Final they would still be in the bar for the majority of the game. Terrible decision making in a sporting sense by the stadium organisers. Oh by the way Montgomery's Save has to be the best ever because of having to get back up and dive backwards towards his line and fully stretch to divert the ball up and onto the bar. Truly amazing. Both BBC and ITV commentators thought it was a goal before realising he'd miraculously kept it out. Great memories.

I remember this game back in 1973, everyone remembers Jim Montgomery's performance in goal, but the entire Sunderland defence was awesome especially the immense Dave Watson, one of the greatest individual cup final performance of all time, what a fantastic player he was, I'm a Manchester City season ticket holder since 1976, Dave Watson was one of our best ever signings, and always crops up when discussing our best ever teams, also the fantastic Dennis Tueart. Newcastle fan here. For many football supporters of my age (55) this FA Cup Final was our first memory of live TV football. Certainly in the North East it was. Our family are staunch Newcastle, but we cheered Sunderland to beat 'dirty' Leeds. For a few days afterwards I was 'Porterfield' as I vainly attempted to smash one into the imaginary top corner, while playing endless games of football on the school field. I soon went back to being 'Macdonald' though, or sometimes Tudor if 'Supermac' was out of form.

To be fair, Coventry weren't given a hope in hell in 1987, cos it was Tottenham's before the game. Cockneys and the FA Cup seem to be inevitable, but thankfully, all the odds were upended and for once, poxy London didn't get anything except a League Cup with Arsenal. Now, it's Chelsea, Arsenal and poxy Spurs again, the rich boys of the South where all the players think the city is all glamorous, but in reality, it's a filthy dirty pollution ridden craphole. It's a damn shame the game wants to allow the three Cockneys, Liverpool and the two Manc mobs to control what other clubs can try and challenge their entitled dominance. Sadly, the corrupt Premier League fatcats are paid by these clubs to be nothing more than puppets, allowing fans to genuinely believe their clubs stand a chicken's chance in Thailand of being a force in that division. It's a load of stitched up dogs dick, designed purely to get pathetic gullible gambling addicts to "hit the bell" like some laboratory rodent, blow their VR money and completely remove the game from the working man altogether. Oh for the days of Sunderland or Southampton, Ipswich etc who could put together a good little squad and keep the players, without some parasite agent whispering in their ears that one of the Big Six oligarchy are waving a wad to entice them to join up, getting paid to sit on a bench for 75% of the season.

47 years later, I can feel the tension of the last 2 minutes - waitibg an eternity for the whistle to blow, the quicker you want it to happen, the longer the referee would take (or so it seems), so agonising And for the fans hundreds of miles away, at home in Sunderland, seeing the clock go over 45 minutes, it must have been even worse than those who had made the journey

Leeds were the best team of their time 1968 1975 before Don Revie left to manage England & just didn't win enough if their finals though were centenary winners the year before against Arsenal, the 1971 Cup winners. In those days, the game was still a fast passing game but it was always an inspirational moment, that one goal that stood out to win... Arsenal's 1971 win, Charlie George's 20 yarder, Leeds Utd win 1972 Alan Clarke's diving header & of course, Sunderland's Ian Porterfield's 1/2 volley, plus that ridiculous save by Jim Montgomery that made the finals what they were, unpredictable, entertaining & memorable. Bobby Stokes run to Jim just about summed everything up with this game as Sunderland had beaten Arsenal in the Semis to after a reply, it was their trophy 🏆 that year, who could've wrenched it away. Brilliant 😂

Great seeing this again.....Brian Moore - commentating legend........Jimmy Hill - blind as a bat, God rest him! How on Earth could he not have seen that Leeds effort (3 minutes into the vid) hitting the bar did not cross the line?!! Also, how could he have missed the fact that Montgomery saved it?! Was eyesight that bad in the 70s?!! I'm joking of course....magnificent double save from Monty and an unforgettable day for Second Division Sunderland.

Nah mate ya didn't knock us off any perch these were the days of proper football the whole country used to watch footy but the FA Cup was the highlight of the season the country would come to a stand still for this one match that the whole world wanted to see. The FA Cup in them days was more important than winning the league especially the plastic premier league trophy. I think you winning the league was fantastic mate i was proper rooting for yers and it was one of the most amazing events ever in English football you lot were brilliant well done Leicester City but mate this was the FA cup final in 1973. More people watched the FA cup final than the world cup final. The prem has destroyed the passion, the whole season is a plastic pantomime there is no magic in it, it just does not excite the fans as much as the old 1st division title did. Football was the staple of the old working class and the hunger and passion for the FA Cup was 2nd to none. Everyone knew where they were when Sunderland beat leeds in the cup final watching it. A world wide audience of billions watched this match this one magical match not a long drawn out saga it was win or bust for the oldest knock out trophy competition in the world the magical FA cup. What you did was amazing and i will never forget it but what Sunderland did that day was nothing short of a miracle and more people watched us win the cup than saw Leicester win league. Football was a lot different back then it was better and more competitive and the passion from real fans was unbelievable. I wish those days were back i don't like what sky and Fa Premier league have done to our beautiful game of the working classes. Give it back to the real fans old skool was better.
