1972: EVOLUTION of MICROPHONES at the BBC | Nationwide | Making Of | BBC Archive
Veteran BBC radio broadcaster John Snagge - who first broadcast for the BBC in 1927 - discusses how microphones evolved throughout his career. Mr Snagge recalls the bulky 'meat safe' microphones originally used by the BBC - which were wheeled around on mahogany legs, Reisz microphones - that needed the occasional kick to unpack their carbon crystals, and moving coil microphones which had to be housed in a hut during outside broadcasts to minimise background noise.
For the purposes of illustration, some BBC archive images have been added to this interview.
This clip is from Nationwide, originally broadcast 27 March, 1972.

Thank you for sharing BANDREW ...interesting one...by the way CONG for the 300 k
Well, that is marvellous. Michael Barratt was clearly enjoying himself and Snagge was wonderfully authoritative - such beautiful vowel sounds.
What a voice though, even in old age...
This man is 118yrs old today..
That first microphone was just 😳
Amazing to think his first broadcast was nearly 100 years ago. A very important figure at the BBC, not only during WWII but apparently he was also instrumental in getting The Goon Show on air.

@@boeingpameesha9550 Yes it is. They also used his name for parodies of his broadcasts for which he did special recordings.
John Snagge was a great broadcaster.
What a joy to see John Snagge speak
Wonderful to see him in vision. My only experience of hearing John Snagge was as the often put-upon announcer who was part of the Goon Shows, so lovely to see him years later still sharp and as witty as ever.
Someone ought to dig up Mr Snagge and give him a microphone. I could listen to that voice all day.
Great interview, and thanks guys for adding those archive images to this edit 👍
His first broadcast a hundred years ago!
A great interview, and the archival stills adds to it.
It's fascinating how fast technology has come. I can only imagine what will humans have 200 years from now. Great upload.

SNAGGERS!
What a loverly man. I bet he had all sorts of stories. I would have loved to have sat for a drink over a fire and listened to them.
Absolutely brilliant!!
Absolutely great. Fun youthful days.
Brilliant!
Purveyors of U87s 😎
Does anyone at BBC Archives actually watch the content they upload. John Snagge said here at 0:25 his first broadcast was on December 11th 1924. But in your description you say "John Snagge - who first broadcast for the BBC in 1927" - come on BBC Archive, are you really that lazy?
Are men being psychologically manipulated to speak softly like women? 🤔
