Also the rubber round thing is a manual pump for the windshield washer fluid. No power sprayer here! My first two cars were a 1971 dart coupe, then a 4 door in this very shade of green. But had a 225 slant 6. Great car but lots of "personality".

The windshield washer was foot operated with the standard 2 speed electric wipers. If you opted for the 3 speed electric wipers an electric washer pump was included. Our 72 base sedan had the foot pump. Out 75 Swinger had the electric pump.

My mom had a '72 Dart Swinger with a 318 engine and Torqueflite tranny, it was a nice car, fully loaded (for a Dart) and could really move! I'd have to pick the '72 Nova, back then I owned a '71 Nova, 250 6 cylinder, with a three on the tree. The Demon, Maverick and the Nova from this period were nice looking cars, were quite simple and reliable. I wish they still made them today

My dad bought a '72 4-door Custom. Paid extra to avoid the package that would have included a vinyl roof with the auto trans thrown in for free. Same color as this one but with power front disc brakes and the 225 cu in engine. I learned how to drive in this car in 1973. I'd forgotten about the big vent doors. He also paid extra to get the limited slip differential. Stock axle ratio was 2.76:1 but we had a friend with the 3.23(?):1 Quicker, but too busy on the highway. That's a "fasten seat belt" light below the fuel gauge.

I’ll go with the Duster again just as I did when I bought one second hand in 1980. Loved the car and also loved that with its vinyl floor, swing out vent windows in the rear and the box vent doors that opened underneath the dashboard I was able to open the back windows and the from vent doors under the dash, speed up to 70mpg and I didn’t have to vacuum a car for three years as all of the dust and sand on the floor flew out the rear vent windows.

The small door under the dashboard is actually a vent box. You would open it to increase airflow in the cabin. There is also another on the passenger side. when I was young I had a 73 Plymouth Valiant with the same configuration. We would stick beers in the space, close the door and drive around for a while(in winter!). and you could enjoy a cold frosty, at home, of course! Great fun car and I miss it much!

I distinctly remember these cars, had a lot of experience with them. With the 225 6 cyl. engine, they could easily get 17 - 20 highway mpg and had plenty of performance. Even with mediocre maintenance they could go 250 k miles and were rock solid reliable and very comfortable. One of my memories was the ice cold air conditioning. With a 318, the performance was excellent. One of the very best cars Chrysler ever made, IMO.

This brings back memories. I drove a 1974 Plymouth Duster for a couple of years, with a Slant Six. Similar colors. It was an automatic. I managed to get close to 40,000 miles out of it...drove it all over. Unfortunately whoever owned the car before me did not give it regular oil changes and I had a nasty gunk problem that killed the engine at about 95K. It was unfortunate because, had the car gotten good maintenance before I got it, I probably could have kept it going for quite some time. The Slant Six was a reliable engine. Anyway, for old times sake I would go for the '72 Dodge. And the '31 Ford Model A.

Didn't sell the 340 in the US in 1972...lucky Canadians got those... 8:42, that is your external air vent, not storage. Great air flow... First year Dodge and Plymouths shared dash panel...that was just the Plymouth's in the past. 72 Demon Slant 6, the leaning tower of power!

It was blue like in the photo (I like the green in the video more). Ok, you manage to really test ones tastes in cars! I miss the Demon, but would rather have a 72 Nova (had one of those too). Oh. My. My first car was a ’72 Duster that my parents bought for my sister and me. This takes me back. There was very little differentiation between Dodge and Plymouth compacts apart from wheelbase. The trim on the door panels was identical to what I see in this Demon. The dash was the same, too (including the fake wood), and I remember the plaid upholstery. The door under the dash in the footwell was not for storage but was actually an odd ‘vent,’ and I think there was another one on the passenger side too. (Not sure, but this might be just before some Chryslers and every Imperial had “rosewood” across the dash.) Our car may have been so bare-bones that it had a rubber carpet. I’m not sure. It was too many years ago. The steering wheel looks huge! I have no idea which engine our Duster had, but I’ve always assumed that our parents probably picked a car with a slant 6 rather than put anything more powerful into the hands of their young drivers. By the time we sold that car there was no love lost for it, at least on my account; I was tired of it and thought it was ugly. Years later I came to appreciate the coolness of the styling that I had overlooked when I drove it. It’s interesting to watch your videos and see the various creases and corners and textures in the cars. I see things I remember and other things I may not have noticed before. Scenario #1: Dodge Demon Scenario #2: Chrysler Slant 6

I had the sister brand’s Plymouth Duster when I was nineteen years old and loved that car. I was rear ended by a tractor trailer without brakes and totaled out like a flat pancake. That Duster saved my life because it was a unibody design which was rare then and because the position of the spare tire sunken into the trunk floor became an extra barrier between me and the truck.

I had the twin to the Demon ,a 72 Plymouth Duster. It was my first new car. Anyway, in the interior the small door you thought was a fuse box or storage , was actually Plymouth/ Dodge's very crude ventilation system . There was no leaver or cable you pulled to let air in. You had to reach down and open the barn door. There was a second one on the passenger side. I love your show, especially the long forgotten independent/ orphan makes. However, I must respectfully disagree on the plaid seats. I went for the optional solid color vinyl seats.

When equipped with the Slant 6 engine, the Dart and Valiant were probably the most reliable domestic cars on the market in the early 1970s. I will give a very honorable mention to the Oldsmobile Cutlass with the 350 V8. In an era when many cars were scrapped after 6 or 7 years, these models were often on the road well into the 1980s. Only much more expensive cars like Mercedes and Volvo bettered them. Plaid, checkered and tartan interiors were offered as were many solid colors. Dodge offered TWENTY TWO exterior paint colors in 1972 for their domestically produced models . 22 🤩

@@What.its.like. In terms of early 70s Mercedes, I was thinking of inline six variants. I have owned or regularly driven 3 Chryslers with the Slant 6. They were the aforementioned 73 Duster, 75 Fury and 80 Diplomat. Two of the engines far and away outlasted the rest of the car. For the the last 40 years Chrysler has not even attempted to make a reliable car or engine. They have been reduced to company that sells gimmicks to people who don't know any better. Teaming up with Fiat and Peugeot only adds momentum to that approach.

These cars never hit those 0-60 times no matter what rear end you bought. The 225 was gutsy enough, but really. Ditto the pre-smog 318 (it got progressively and markedly worse, ending up as a 14+ second car in a Volare) - peppy, but no 8 second car, ever.. The 340? Oh yes, that could do it. I drove a lot of these (starting at 15, license, what license) ; everyone had some variation. Dodge got the Demon b/c the Duster was selling like hotcakes. In return Plymouth was given the Scamp (so now Dodge had a short wheelbase compact and Plymouth got the larger, heretofore Dodge exclusive 111 stretch) These were the 'smily face' Darts before the 73 facelift. Back seat was claustrophobic - making it worse, those flip out quarter windows were an option. Based models were total strippers - had an older relative who was unbalance by her husband's death, walked into a dealer and said give me a car, I don't care - and drove out with a mustard yellow base Dart sedan with, I think, power steering, a radio and that was it. Blackwalls, no chrome and poverty hubcaps. Finally, lest you think the outraged right is a new phenomenon, they had a hissy fit over 'Demon' and in 73 the model became a Dart Sport. Took a couple years, but get that devil out of our parking lots!. WYR - the Demon, properly optioned :)

I had a couple of friends which had the Dart Demons, one a 1972 and the other a 1973. Both were equipped with the 225 slant 6, automatic, power steering and A/C. In the 55 mph speed limit days, both of them got close to 30 mpg on the freeway. They really didn't need power brakes. The 340 Demons were real pocket rockets with 4-speeds(pre-Mopar O/D 4-speeds). They would run right up with a Nova SS 350. I would take a Demon 340 over a Chevy Nova SS(unless 396). In 6cyl. automatic form, I'd again take the Demon over a Nova 250 because the 6 cyl Nova would have a 2-speed PowerGlide automatic . Go for the slant 6 feature.

@@What.its.like. Hopefully, you will mention the aluminum version of the slant 6 and how it was a failure. Most, if not all aluminum engines were swapped for traditional cast iron types while the cars were in warranty. It was also funny that the original WWII Dodge Power Wagons(made into the 70's) never got the slant six but continued to use the old Mopar flathead six.

Interesting backstory to both the 1970 Plymouth Duster and its clone the 1971 Dodge Demon. Money had been allocated by Chrysler management for a major facelift of the 1967 compact car (both Valiant and Dart). However, in secret a few Chrysler designers purposefully spent that money instead on designing the 1970 Plymouth Duster. It was difficult to design the very rounded side glass on the Duster and have enough tolerance to roll those windows down into the doors. Management did not punish the designers and agreed to put the Duster into production. Of course, Dodge dealers wanted a version of the Duster (called Demon which was a controversial nameplate that only lasted a few model years). Later, a fold-down rear seat was added in 1973 and even later a stripped model with aluminium components (Feather Duster). Dodge and Plymouth made almost identical clones of those compact cars in the 1970s. Sales of them were very strong during the Oil Embargo of 1973/1974.

The 340s were giant killers in these. Unfortunately you missed the decent compression by one year. They made millions and millions of these A-bodies. The cresent I lived in, in 1972, had 9 houses, six had A-bodies, one had one each for hubby and wife. Damned good value and reliability. Like a lot of GMs too, I hated the back seat, having size 12 feet. You literally had to turn your feet sideways to get your bell bottoms and striped Addidas in. Trunks were far better than a Nova, with GM wasting their trunk with the way they stored their spare. The space saver, knock down back seat allowed you to sleep in the car. Those front vents would cool your beverages if you stashed them in there. Torsion bar frames rotted away, being right under your salt encrusted feet, causing the bars to unload and break your front suspension, dropping your nose to the ground, wrecking your car. Luckily, unlike Novas their steering boxes didn't detach, causing you to lose steering, as the frame horns rotted away. The number of Novas you'd see going down the road like a crab, was huge. Looking like they were turning left(or right) forever more, from the slightest frame prang. Dusters also had bolt on door hinges where as Novas had them welded on right from the factory, meaning the average owner couldn't change or align the doors.

@@What.its.like. I wish you good luck in covering that. As someone who lived through all that, working at a Plymouth stealership in the 70s, I had a lot of respect for the 340s in a time of big blocks(so did the 400 cube GM intermediates). Be sure to mention that the Mopar high performance engines, didn't drop their pants and bend over, like GM in 70. 340s, 383s, 440s and the King of the street 426 Hemis were available right up to 72'(and some in 72') with high compression. Also those"packages" stemmed from Chrysler's police package program. Dodge and Plymouth owned the police market from the late 50s into the 80s because of rock solid suspensions and drivetrains. The 340 benefitted from that in the traction department. A solid lifter 396, 375 hp Nova was helpless on the street or strip because their E70(narrow) tires couldn't hook up in dry or wet to save their lives. 340 A-bodied had semi elliptical Super Stock leaves which didn't require traction bars. Plus a from the factory pinion snubber allowing them to plant and disappear from the competition. The other thing to remember is they lied through their teeth about 275 horsepower on the 340s to appease the insurance companies(who were murdering people with big block intermediates at the time). The NHRA factored them in at 355 horse as they were cleaning their own class and several above it. Lastly one trip to the parts department and you could buy an over the counter manual detailing how to drop them into, as low as, the 11s on the street with factory engineered hot rod parts(with warranties on them) with tested, guaranteed results. The last 3 years of the A-body had the 360 Thermoquad instead of the low compression 340 and if you look up magazine tests the performance actually went up. At the time no one wanted a 360, but several specialty outfits like the 340/360 shop and Ed Hamburger changed that real quick. The real secret was undisclosed power to much less weight(than the full framed competition) ratio. Everyone my age has a 340 giant killing story or five to tell you.

Beautiful car, but whoever restored it missed one specific item only available, and standard on, the 72 Dart, Valiant, Coronet, Challenger, Barracuda, Charger and Belvedere/, Satellite lines. From the factory 72 cars with that style of side marker light had an argent silver plastic gasket that the light itself sat in. There was just a fine bead of silver visible. It served to give a more finished look to the car. Back in the day those lights cost $2 Canadian. I replaced a few.

Hi Jay!: Hate the name. . .really, really, like the car! Nothing wrong with the good old slant 6! LOVE the color combo! My 1969 Fairlane 500 2dht, had the same combo, except for the seats were all vinyl. I always liked the rear end design on these Dodges! The speedo brings back memories for me, as my aunt Kathryn had an early '70's Plymouth station wagon. The speedo on that was very similar to the one in the Dart! Rode around a LOT in that blue bomber! Her previous car wasn't bad either, a 1966 Plymouth Fury III sedan. WYR is easy! As much as I like the Dart gotta go Maverick on this one! A slightly smaller car than the dart, but I always liked the design. Not really a fan of the Nova (at least that body style) My Grandmother had one and she didn't like it! Of course, her previous car had been, GET THIS; a 1967 Camaro with 327!! I would have preferred that over the Nova, too! My Uncle's car had broken down and she GAVE him the Camaro! AAAHHHHH! My LUCKY cousin ended up with that! Of course I was happy with my 1969 Torino GT Fastback! With 351! WYR#2 Has to be the BRC! I LOVE Model "A"'s, though and hope the Deluxe Phaeton is next after the BRC! Can't wait to see the slant 6 episode either!

These small successful engines are really interesting. Found myself thinking how much fun a late 60s maverick could be with a small V8 or a 300ci 6 (I've had a few ford 300 sixes and its not clear that you can even kill the thing. Put 400,000 miles on one, it had been an oilfield service truck and had been rode hard. But the engine never complained)

It’s just a normal everyday car which I totally get it but the normal every day cars are the ones that are first gone because a lot of people don’t save those like for instance I have never seen in my lifetime a dodge colt in any style I would love to review one and they are basic cars. Come to think of it I’ve never seen a 72 challenger in person either, but have seen that chargers which people loved those and took care of them so there are more of them out there

Its not a Duesenberg is it? I think they were made out of paper mache but they still found a way for them to rust apart. The American Trabant.

@@What.its.like. The Quenton Tarentino film from about 2007. Kurt Russel plays a former stuntman who drives cars made for filming stunts in movies, and the cars are 100% death proof, but only for the driver.
