1972 #122 FLH 98ci shovelhead stroker motor rebuild Harley by tatro machine
see how to rebuild a Harley hotrod shovelhead stroker motor with very few new parts.
the motor ran out of oil from a big oil leak and locked up. need to fixed the motor for the summer and then fix it right over the winter.
I bet it runs good for a few years because of the way I fix things.

    I have been riding and wrenching Harleys since the mid 1970's. I have re-built maybe 6 or 7 engines and 4 transmissions, certainly not a lot by anyone's standards. Each time I watch one of your videos I get simple, common sense tips that promote reliability. For this I am grateful that you have taken the time to produce these videos.

    ...So...you think that's bad? When I bought my 46 Knuckle, the threads on that main gear were so broken off from hammering on that big nut, the previous 'mechanic' just welded the nut, threaded extension and sprocket all together.....After replacing all that stuff and new seals (and buying a big socket)....no leaks.....and that was over 30 years ago.....

    Your knowledge of this stuff is unbelievable. I don't understand how the 80-82 spacer washer works. When you torque it down, wouldn't it just push the seal further in?

  • @TatroMachine

    @TatroMachine

    i could but then it would be dragging. seals don't work very good when they are being jammed into something. this is an older video so i am assuming that the spacing washer was needed for seal clearance or to offset the sprocket for case clearance or sprocket alignment purposes with the rear wheel or sprocket. tatro

    Sometimes it easier to just jerk that new inter seal out and start a new 1 again. Seals are cheap, BUT make sure you know which way the lip is supposed to be.

    I used a 1977 non keyed spacer and torqued it down and lightly ( impact gun set on the #2 setting out of 5). This is also on a 72. Now the sprocket is super tight, and barely turns. What'd I do wrong? I did measure the 77 spacer against the 72 spacer and the 77 measure .030 thicker. I wonder if that is causing the tightness. I'll pop the old, keyed spacer in and see how that feels.

    you might have the cork seal stuck under the spacer instead of being around the spacer like it should. i use the -77 spacers all the time without any problems. always put thee spacer in the seal before you install the seal and make sure the cork is down in the holes too. tatro

  • @jeffreylonigro1382

    Yeah, that's what I did. I put the cork in first, then the spacer. Its under, not around, the spacer. I gotta figure this out.

    The 5 sped seal he said was 10 thousands larger in diameter so, I can’t see how that would be a good fix. I understand the issue with the gear being broken out but the seal was deformed when he installed it and if the outer nut was going to seal it as well, I think I’d have put the correct seal in. I don’t see the seal he put in lasting too long. Just my thoughts.

    So your driver setup for the mainshaft nut: took a socket, drilled the square drive hole big enough to fit over the mainshaft and then welded a section of pipe and then welded that to another socket? Si, si...no, no?

  • @TatroMachine

    @TatroMachine

    no, i cut the socket and add the tube in the middle and weld it all back together. i add a 2nd socket if i need a 1/2" drive square end. tatro

    Everything I've tried over the years has been in vein as the transmission would still end up leaking. POS design if you were to ask me. Major PITA to get at too (outer and inner primary). I don't know what made me so brand loyal even after 35 years of ownership and 6 different models, I must be a glutton for punishment. My brother has 4 Harley Davidsons and 3 are broken and need something. ALWAYS somethin...

    new s&s crank is around 1300 and main bearings are around 160. if you can set-up the timken bearing you can do the job yourself. not too much fitting on twincam motor. they are made to be put together with machines, not humans. tatro
