I think dumping Tarkenton was their greatest mistake. Cuozzo, Lee, and Kapp weren’t on Fran’s level.

Bud Grant is still alive at age 95!. He coached this game 52 years ago. Amazing.

Sadly he recently passed away, one of the last legendary coaches of the NFL!

Sam Spence music, Jack Whitaker's voice, a game played on a hockey rink and very few penalties for deliberating hitting a player on the other team. It MUST be late 1970!

The 25th Anniversary year of the 49ers

I have vivid memories of watching this game in my PJs as a little kid back in 70. I’ve been a Niner fan ever since. The Niners lost a close one the following week to the Cowboys in their last game at Kezar. You really needed thick skin to be a Niner fan in those days with the Cowboys & Rams beating on them like a drum, the Raiders being in their heyday across the Bay, the team meltdown in the 76 season after starting 6-1, followed by the Joe Thomas era. Hence the phrase ‘Forty-Niner Faithful’. That’s why the Catch game was a big deal. It got them over the hump. The Vikings are another team which caused a lot of heart ache with their fans.

God I loved the old Met.

These old classic videos are a real treasure.

As a Packers fan I have to say the Vikings gave up their home field advantage when they built a domed stadium. It isn't the same. They aren't the same neither is the NFL. What a shame.

Even though they lost this one, the Vikes were were 7-3 in playoff games at the Met from 69 to 76. Not only did they lose their home field advantage, they lost their identity. Teams feared coming here in in December and January. This was Vikings weather! Now they play in an overpriced synthetic stadium.

9 year old me watched this game intently. Saw a couple games at Kezar that last season there.

It’s great to be able to watch these highlights. I’m also glad the comments aren’t turned off like some other highlights. Not sure why someone would ever turn comments off on football highlights. It’s nice to hear what some people have to say about the games. Maybe they saw it in person or maybe they had an encounter with a player or coach that would be fun to know about.

What gets lost here is the 49ers had a very good team, a very young good team.

Anyone notice #17 on the punt return blocking for SF? Billy Kilmer before he went to Washington to become QB.

That Vikings team remindes me of the 2001 Baltimore Ravens. They released Trent Dilfer, the Vikings didn't resign Joe Kapp. The defense ead everything for both teams and championship worthy. But it was the guys that replaced the quaterbacks, Cuazzo and Grbac that let the team down. In Cuazzos case, his receivers and backs with the drops and fumbled killed momentum.

As a 10 year old Vikings fan who lived a few miles away from Metropolitan Stadium, this game was almost as disappointing as the previous year's Super Bowl loss to an AFL team. It was fully expected that the Vikings with the best Defense in the NFL would beat the 49ers at home in the frigid cold. Lets face it, the 49ers back then were not exactly a juggernaut. The Vikings wasted the NFL's best D in both 70 and 71 losing at home (to Dallas in 71). The problem was Cuozzo was a journeyman 2nd string QB who was competent but nothing special, and he was the QB in both 70 and 71. Also with Osborn and Brown getting older, they had to rely on Clint Jones as an everydown RB, and he had fumblelitis. So the Vikes had less offensive firepower and were already conservative. Really inexcusable that the defense gives you a 7-0 lead with Krause's fumble return TD. and the offense cant score until 1 sec left in the game. I have all the Vikings playoff wins from 69 to 77 on DVD on these NFL GOW shows, which I treasure, but this 1970 game I have not seen in decades and the frustration just came rushing back.

Strange that even back then the Vikings wouldn’t have taken to qb position more importantly than they did. No way would I have gone into a season with Cuozzo has my qb.

@@michaelgibsontv Yep, there was no "we need to draft a top QB or trade for a big name" back then. They figured Cuozzo who had backed up Unitas for a few years was experienced enough. They realized after 2 playoff losses they were wasting the league's best D, so they finally said "lets bring Tarkenton back", and he proceeds to lead them to a 7-7 record! Thats 3 years wasted till they got back to elite status.

Seemed like the punter (no 12, anyway, for the Vikings, presumably the punter) made the tackle, and in such a way that Taylor left the field apparently injured. He had a great game and a great play, but it was an unfortunate ending to the play; I wonder how seriously he was hurt or if he returned back into the game.

The year before and being cold against the LA Rams in playoff game the it was a beautiful day but this game you felt them wind gusts and with the SF 49ers being in control most of the game it felt bone chilling cold and definitely not a beautiful day

Agreed. And this was the closest the 49er and the Raiders ever came to playing one another in the Super Bowl. The 49ers made it to the NFC Championship game against Dallas at Kezar Stadium in S.F., and the Raiders were in Baltimore to play the Colts in the AFC Championship game. @@frankdenardo8684

The Vikings were a dominant team by the numbers in 1970. Outscoring their opponents by 182 points in a 14 game season (average of 13 ppg). That included a 54-13 thrashing of Dallas. But their poor passing game was their downfall...Cuozzo was 9 for 27 with 2 INTs. Yikes.

Yes, but keep in mind that 7 td,s where scored by the defense. In the Dallas game there where blocked kicks and ints. They desperately needed Kapp......defense alone does NOT win championships.

Not the last time the 49ers were underdogs in a cold weather site against the NFC central. NFC championship against Bears Jan 89. Soldier Field. 49ers 28-3. Beat Bengals in tropical Miami 20-16. Superbowl XXIII.

We don't need the information stupid, anyone watching this video has most likely been watching football for a long time.

The Met and Wrigley Field were two venues where both teams' benches were on the same sideline. At least the end zones were a full 10 yards at the Met. They were just 8 yards at Wrigley. 1970 wasn't the best year for the NFL, but it was exciting because of the merger. The NFL was more entertaining in the 1950's and 1990's than any other time since and today.

The Vikings were never the same since they went indoors. Players now are so spoiled. They always play on perfect fields. Heaters on the bench. Best equipment and they still complain.

At the 1 minute mark, he says "...the Viking defense lead by Jim Marshall and Carl Eller..." Ahhhhh, sorry, but I believe he forgot about the greatest Viking of all time, and possibly greatest defensive tackle of all time , and leader of the Vikings...

Page wasn't yet in that stratosphere in 1970.

Both defenses were awesome, it was the SF special teams that won them this game. Both of their TD's were set up by deep punt returns, and their kicker made 1 of 2 FG's (one was blocked) while MN's kicker just failed on both of his attempts.

The only good news for the Vikes - it did prevent them from being 0 & 5 in SB’S

Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant did not allow his players heaters to keep warm.(for any game) He thought it would make them tougher and give them an advantage if they became accustomed to the cold.He was a good coach but that decision was ridiculous. Late in the game his receivers dropped a lot of passes because their hands were cold.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Minnesota won this game. They would have traveled to Dallas, whom they clobbered 54-13 earlier in the year. However, they would have faced a Cowboys' team whose defense was playing as well as anyone at this time.

@zaraman0077 Joe Knapp also had a great year the year before 1968 lead the Vikings to there first ever playoff game then next year 1969 lead them to there first Superbowl after that season they let him go to the Boston Patriots the worst team in the newly merged AFL NFL You ask any player that played on them Vikings teams what they thought of Joe Knapp and they'll give a different answer then you did and they'll give you the same answer today

Gene Washington was open several times but Cuozo's passes were short each time. Wonder what Kapp would have done had he signed with Vikings that season.

Great highlights the only thing that could have been better if the complete game was available

Helmets looked goofy in the 70’s.

I miss these games played in the cold frozen fields. Minn. was always in need of a good QB. kapp was good for a year , Tarkington did pretty good but never got over the hump. even today cousins is a decent QB but I can't see him hoisting a Lombardi trophy. in the big games they were a little light in the ass on ol & dl.

Minnesota's mistake was trading Fran away in 1967. If he had stayed with the team all the way, I think they would have won a SB when Bud Grant first built his team, sometime between 69' and 71. The later Vikings teams led by Tarkington were rapidly aging and weren't as formidable as those earlier teams were.

Practically a criminal travesty that when DeBartolo took over the 49ers he had them burn all the 49ers club film of the team during their years prior to his ownership, including these great teams of the early 70's. The only existing footage of them is from NFL Films but there was a lot more that got destroyed. Shameful.

Disappointing game for the Vikings, as the 49ers parlayed field position into short scoring drives. A poor offensive showing for the Vikes prompted Bud Grant to trade for Norm Snead shortly after, but he wasn't the answer, either..

Eventually, yes. The Vikes only finished 7-7 in 1972, but the offense was good. The defense was only average, as opposed to their record-setting performance from 1969-71. With the defense returning to form in 73, they went to the Super Bowl, and they went back again in 74 and 76, and won divisional titles from 1973-78. 1972 was the only "down" year...

Only six years old when this game was played so never watched it until just now seeing the highlights. The cold weather obviously made it hard to catch and hang onto the football this day in Minnesota. And Bud GRant not allowing any heaters on the sideline? Maybe he would have reconsidered it - so many turnovers effected the outcome of this game.

How ironic that the 49ers could win this game but could not beat The Cowboys at home one week later.

don't like the teams(I was a L.A ram fan at the time) but I remember that was the only way you could see highlights of games back(especially if it was blacked out cause it was not sold out 24 hrs before game time) then,no ESPN, no update on your phones hell no mobile phones at all back then....lol

And the other way you could see on TV if team was playing at home field you had to drive 75 miles away until Congress threatened to drop the NFL'S monopolistic protection if they didn't allow viewing of home games if games were sold out 48 hours in advance in 1974

The Vikings were the best team in the NFL this season also this era of Viking defense is the greatest defense that's ever played in the NFL how they didn't come out of this with at least two super bowls is beyond me they had everything people don't realize what a great defense is if they did not see the purple gang at its best they were like nothing you've ever seen on a football field when they was on you couldn't do nothing and everybody says well they didn't stop the run in those super bowls for the life of me I don't know why that was the case because during the regular season they would be number one against the run four or five different times in the '70s they was the number one team at stopping the run so I don't know I know against the dolphins that was one of the greatest teams that's ever assembled so I understand I'm not being able to stop the run in that game cuz nobody could stop that team but they still held them to just 24 points the purple gang still didn't get blown out like that

Kapp was missed. But that 49er defense was TOUGH.

I think the Vikings offense made them look tough. Bottom line it was a very weak offense. The only reason were so good record wise was because of our Number 1 defense and arguably the greatest defense in NFL History from 69 to 71.

THIS is football in the cold & mud the domed stadiums ruined all this

A friend of mine who are used to work with was that the Hail Mary game at metropolitan Stadium He said he had a good relationship with his wife he drove he got drunk she drove home But he also said he never heard of stadium so quiet after the Hail Mary pass

The era between Kapp and Tarkenton the Vikings' offense was tortuous to watch

This game alone should destroy any myth that West coast teams can't play in the cold.

@@jonathand.9555 Different game back in 1970, I mean the Vikings couldn't score on offense, and that's the reason they lost. The '88 49ers were a damn good team, and the Bears didn't do anything to really stop the 49ers.

Bitter loss no Joe kapp in 1970/71 Superbowl was there to be won. Baltimore and dallas were beatable..

Always thought he was very good Qb and at the time during his play days not but underrated now and you know its because he didn't go to a Superbowl. Pretty dumb how their are many great players forgotten just because they didn't play in one game a Super Bowl.

Sadly the 49ers never really had a running game at the time to bring them a Super Bowl before the Eddie D./Walsh/Montana years because those teams had many great (yet underrated) players on offense and defense, and some of them are even Hall of Famers!

There's alot of great players and great teams that didn't win the Superbowl and and because of that they didn't get into the HOF or had to wait for years or even decades and still happening now from NFL teams and AFL teams from the 1960s on and now most of these people voting for players inducted into the HOF have never seen these players play and don't even know who alot of them are even though they were great players in many cases better than some there voted or we'll be voting in.When we hosted the Superbowl here last time in Mpls I meet someone that worked with the NFL HOF committee and I told him that and told him to tell the NFL that but more importantly I also told him I didn't like the way the NFL treats it's former players who built the NFL into what it is today By not giving them more medical help and fighting every time against the former players except by a settlement in court and then claiming in the media how much they do for them the same with the current players they're all reaping the benefits of what these players built and can't help these former players out more the NFL bragging about all they do for the former players while behind the scenes fighting against every medical research into brain injuries and medical benefits for these players for years and years while the 1960s players had to work full time jobs during the off season to make ends meet you got a NFL commissioner making Billions that's Billions with a capital B yearly salary and brags on how much he admires the players from the 1960s but doesn't do more to help them

@@TitoJSmith Look into Buddy Young who was the franchises best player. He was the first of the mighty mite players who have graced NFL rosters: Mack Herron, Darren Sproles, Maurice Jones-Drew, etc.....

IDK what the hell Bud Grant and GM were thinking in that they had an alternative in Cuozzo for Kapp. Should've gotten Kapp signed or looked HARD & FAST for a worthy QB replacement, college &/or free agency/Trade. Bud Grant knew better. Cuozzo was just an emergency replacement/place holder type QB. No one knew that better than Bud Grant. Cuozzo proved this yrs previously. In hindsight, Bud wasted a good "D" year with the "O" he put on the field in 1970. Same deal in 1971. MN (et al) had too much patience back in those days. Now, your butt would be gone.

it was personal, between Jim Finks/ Vikings GM, and Kapp. Kapp had played out option in 1969/70. It ran deep. Grant and Finks were like- we dont need Kapp. Well, they did.

The Vikings unlike now were known for being cheap in the 1960s and 1970s when dealing with players salaries but this was a stunning development when they let Joe Kapp go but also was like revenge against him for asking for a pay raise for bringing them to the first playoff game ever in 1968 and a first NFL championship and a first and at that time one of only 4 NFL teams to make a Super bowl appearance.That was the NFL back then and the biggest reason for the AFL NFL meager because of rising players salaries in the bidding war between the NFL and AFL

They also dealt him to the worst team in the NFL at the time so aside from not wanting to pay him more it sure seemed like they were really trying to stick to him and they only hurt themselves and really disappointed a understatement all the Vikings fans most of who loved him to this day and that goes for the players on that team too

@@jameshuseby6290 Good point(s) made. Wonder what the "numbers" were being discussed by Vikes & Kapp. Exorbitant or not? Strange the Kapp debacle was never covered (that i know of) in anyone's book from that era (Grants; adm's; etc.) to tell us more details.

@@jameshuseby6290 Would really like to have known what Grants' real opinion was then, and later on in life, via "hindsight." Am sure some teammates were probably like "WTH/WTF???" But "sticking it to him" sure was a Bitch move on GM/Owners part.

The only reason why any nfc team went to the Superbowl from 72 76 is that Duane Thomas was a head case. If he would of played for the cowboys i honestly believe this. He was the best running back I ever say. Even t Landry said they would of beat Pittsburgh both times if DT was still with them.

LOL, that is so silly. The Cowboys were getting old quickly after their SB VI victory and that's why they couldn't even win the NFC East but once between from 1972 thru 1975, missing the playoffs completely in 1974.

great to see them beat those arrogant ones

Dallas would go into the last game at Kezar Stadium the next week and win.

I met Bruce Taylor at a kid's Halloween party once when I was 10. I didn't believe it was him. He was dressed like a Pirate.🙂

Was at this game and the LA Rams at Mn Vikings playoff games the year before and can't blame you for saying that but they did win that LA Rams and Cleveland Browns who were a good team playoff games in 1969 !and many playoff games after this game just didn't win the Superbowls and for years NFC championship games but over the years they haven't gone into years and years of not making the playoffs like many teams have but ya I know where you're coming from believe me!

The way to beat Minnesota's defense was to ( as Kansas City and 49ers did) throw quick passes in front of the Vikings cornerbacks. K. C. did this with very good success in Super Bowl 4. As the 49ers did too.

The KC Chiefs manhandled that Vikings defensive line in SB IV, especially Jim Marshall. They rushed for 151 yards. Then in Super Bowl IX, the Steelers used the same philosophy. Overpower that Minnesota defensive line. The Steelers rushed for an astounding 249 yards!

Reportedly, Joe Kapp asked for a 5-year, 1 million dollar contract. Jim Finks wouldn't give it to him, and thus Gary Cuozzo takes over. This game really wasn't Cuozzo's fault. The Viking receivers dropped just about everything thrown their way....I remember it pretty well.

@Alfonso Hunt LOL, if the Vikings retained Kapp, both he and they would have gone further in the playoffs in 70 and 71. Kapp would not have retired.

I wish the vikings didnt cheap out and instead give joe kapp the money . it might have changed history .

If Kapp was there the Vikes would have won. Cuozzo was not a reliable starter. He was a journeyman QB. In his defense the offensive line stank, and they kept coughing up the ball. Sharockman dropped two INT's and the Special Teams had an awful game.

AHH The days of no pouting look at me celebrating overpaid players and overkill over hyped overpriced tickets conseseions NFL playoff tickets for this game cost me $7.00 each bottle of vodka $00 since I snuck it in and smoking allowed same thing for playoff game year before against LA Rams and being 15 years old for Rams and 16 for SF game had a ball although not so much SF because we Vikings were never in that game

Was Cuozzo as bad as he seemed?

Disappointing to say the least. The Vikings were 12-2 with a primary QB who threw 7 touchdowns the whole season. You need better than that to make it deep into the playoffs.

wasn't a viking fan but bud grant gets all my respect & then some. could he have made better decisions as coach, probably, but he is a heck of a man.

1970's had terrible kicking

A pleasant 8 degrees above zero lol. I still think the Vikings would've played in more Super Bowls if they played outdoors. Teams were scared to play up there, now it's just a neutral site.

@@6400az Well,..... You know they were also 7-3 in home playoff games at the Met from 69-76. Gfer is correct, teams feared playing us in the playoffs in Dec and Jan. We had one of the greatest home field advantages in the history of the NFL.

Here's Cuozzo for you. I know they scored defensively 2 played later, but seriously.....what the hell type of pass is this 😡😡 3:05 !!

I forgot how awful truly Cuozzo was, lol. And the playoffs made no sense in those days. For this divisional round, Minnesota , with the best record, should have hosted WC Detroit, while SF should have hosted Dallas.
