    I like the speed difference between cars. They used to be flagships of the manufacturer, now they are all identical with different decals. I appreciate the safety of NASCAR now (I don't want to see anyone hurt or killed) but it would be nice if NASCAR allowed manufacturers to put their best car on the track instead of making all cars equal.

    yeah but i mean, if you had one car that was definitively better than the others, then you'd know who would win cause their car is better. i kind of like that they're identical now, because it actually relies on the raw skill of the driver and not on the car

    It's so amazing to watch videos of the wing cars in action from over fifty years ago. I can barely remember watching these races live as an 11 year-old. My brother bought the newstand copy of _Stock Car Racing_ that told the story of Buddy Baker's 200mph lap at Talledega in the Chrysler's light blue #88 Daytona test mule. It was a fascinating time, with the big troubles of Vietnam, RFK and MLK's assasinations, college campus riots, and the incredible Apollo moon landings. People were not silenced, ingenuity was not silenced, NASCAR racercars were actual modified factory machines that people could identify with and root for. Those days are _lonnngggg_ gone.

    The interview with Lee Roy Yarbrough @48:12 . . . that year Lee Roy crashed his race car, doing tire testing, at the old Texas World Speedway; and according to many published sources, he was a different person after that; where decades later, people are surmising he may have suffered from CTE to the brain due to the hard crash. Yarbrough died in a mental hospital in 1984. A tremendous loss to NASCAR back in a vintage era.

  • @superdragUSA1

    @superdragUSA1

    2 жыл бұрын

    I agree with you. Right after Texas, he crashed again, this time driving one of Dan Gurney's Eagles, splitting his helmet during the impact. Cale Yarborough flew Lee Roy back home after being hospitalized from the tire testing accident at Texas; he said he knew something was wrong with Lee Roy as he hardly said a word. Later on Junior Johnson (who said Lee Roy was the best to ever drive for him because he was fearless) would have to pull Lee Roy off the track because his erratic behavior, and even spent over $250,000 of his own money sending Lee Roy to specialists to figure out what happened to him. Obviously, his behavior was due to multiple concussions, and even though he was the first driver ever to win the three crown jewels in the same year (Daytona 500, Darlington Southern 500, Charlotte World 600) and the first to win the Daytona 500 and Daytona Firecracker 400 in the same year, was voted 1969 driver of the year, was also voted Ford Motor Cars driver of the year AND is in NASCAR's top 50 drivers of all time...they (NASCAR and it's voters) have refused to include Lee Roy in it's Hall of Fame, even now knowing the dangers of traumatic head injuries, inducting Dale Jr who admitted driving multiple times knowing he had concussions. Lee Roy was an advocate for driver safety and lead the walkout for the inaugural race of the Alabama 500 at Talladega due to tire issues the cars were having. Lee Roy punched "Big Bill" France square in that horse face of his, dropping him like a sack of potatoes, when Bill demanded the show will take place. And, that is why this piece of shit organization has not inducted Lee Roy, and maybe it's for the better, because Lee Roy will always live rent free in their hypocritical minds.

    Wow i didn’t know that he died in a psych ward, it’s very sad that this man suffered this much because people didn’t understand head injuries back then.. For them it was all fine and dandy if you survived. Head injuries were only declared as “bad” if a driver either died or became a human vegetable. If he was able to get out a somewhat coherent sentence after the crash it was considered a minor accident. Very sad..

He had the Daytona 500 won with just a few laps to go in '74 but had a cut tire that allowed Petty to win from a distant second. Fords answer to the Chrysler/Dodge Wing cars was the Ford Torino Talladega. It was actually more slippery and had more down force. This pissed off the Mopar guys no end. They were just as quick. The prototype Talladega with the Boss 429 engine was tested at the Charlotte airport at midnight just before Christmas in 1969. The Ford big wigs, KarKraft and Hollman Moody guys were there too. There is a report that Bod Moore drove it. He will never admit it. So the car went out to the runway and did a couple of runs up to 5000rpm. He was brought in and told to start at the beginning of the runway. Off he went, taking it out to 7800rpm through the gears. It went to 8000 and 223mph 3/4 way down the runway. Both the brakes on the fronts exploded and he had to put it into a slide to stop it. Hushed silence. The driver driver brought the car, smoking and everything, back to the group, got out, threw his helmet on the ground and walked off, got into his car and left. Everyone stared. The Ford guy broke the silence and was heard to say, "They will ban it for sure". They did.

    I was 18 in 1970. The Torino Talladegas and Mercury Cyclone Spoilers looked like they were going 200 mph standing still. Of all the cars that have raced in NASCAR, none have looked better than the Torino. With that Boss 429 engine, they could easily match the 426 Hemi. When I was a junior in high school in 1969, one of the students bought a new 1969 Torino Super Cobra Jet. Fastest car at my school. Good memories.
