What's better than a hot drop-top in the heat of the summer? This week, we're taking a spin in a 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T Convertible, powered by the torquey 440 Magnum V8. Imagine in 1970, there was 200 million people in the USA, and only 236 ordered this combo. At the peak of muscle car mania. That's nuts

it wasn't like that, back then it wasn't the muscle car era, not really, it was just a car era same as any, v-8s were getting lighter and more powerful is all, cars were huge for the most, many didn't care for the economy or lack of, they had to drive em to work, people didn't have several cars back then, $3k was a lot of money, also almost every car made had a V-8, many had large powerful v8's, no need for a hemi or 440... hale a lot of mopars came with 400 mags, family sedans, yup, remember these were not hot rods back then they were family sedans, most the racing came later.. as did the moniker

Always preferred the B-bodies and still have my 71 RR today. Had a chance to buy a 69 R-T Coronet convertible back in the late 80’s for $2500 which only needed an a/t trans... because of unforeseen circumstances I didn’t buy it...always regretted it slipping away to someone else.

Unfortunately as witnessed growing up in Michigan with extreme winters most of these R/T meant Rusted and Totalled. Glad to see this one survived quite nicely! Fix that differential!

    I had (2) 1969 Charger's, one a RT/SE 440, (2) '70 Challenger's, one an R/T 440, a '70 Chrysler 300-H with 440 & a '71 Demon but always wanted this 1970 Coronet R/T 440, the end that got away.

Interestingly, my first new car was a 70 Coronet500/ Ralley red & Black Vinyl TOP383/4 BBL NON MAGNUM...... I got such a deal on it that could, not wait for RT , OR ETC. High use, for some 14 years, Family use and then “RUST, ETC “REALLY made it a real problem........though nicer to,work on that my later cars ( 77 TransAm SE HURST, 82 Buick Century ( Junk), 93 Grand Cherokee,97 DODGE INTREPID ( moderate Junk), 2007 GMC CANYON ( no verdicts), 2015 DODGE JOURNEY (seems worthwhile, though underpowered)......

I bought one of these several years ago that had been rolled over. We put hard top doors on it, but nothing would line up. Come to find out dodge used wing windows from the 67 Coronet witch made the windshield standup more.

The Coronet R/T was a bit more upscale than the Super Bee. The 1970 R/T came standard with the 440 Magnum 4 barrel and the 727 auto trans. The 70 Super Bee came standard with the 383 Magnum and a 3 speed manual trans. The 440 Six Pack and 426 Hemi were engine options in both cars and so was the A-833 4 speed manual trans. The 727 auto trans was also optional in the Super Bee. Many of the features that were optional in the Super Bee came standard in the more expensive Coronet R/T

You all do know that many of those track #s are skewed because they don't account for the excessive wheel spin. It was either spin your wheels or feather the throttle until you got traction.

R/T stand for Rapid/Transit which was part of their performance program in the late 60s and 70s called the Rapid/Transit system. They had catalogs that sold performance parts.

I believe it was rapid transit. Chrysler originally wanted road/track but couldn't use it. Unlike the "road runner" name which Chrysler bought the rights to from Warner Brothers, for $50,000, for use of the bird. One of the best marketing maneuvers ever. You couldn't think of a better name. For a muscle Car........ You're actually correct. The term "road and track" was actually owned and copyrighted by road and track magazine. Even tho almost every one still called them that. The rapid transit system was a bunch of mopars darts challengers runners gtxs super bees and even the huge furys. There was also the scat pack. I used to have that poster in my bedroom as a kid. The rapid transit system, all the cars lined Up on a dry lake bed in the desert... Mopars= the best muscle cars

@@stripervince1 Much of the ads for the R/T cars stated Rapid Transit, which to me makes sense when you note the manufactures problems with the insurance rates. Road and Track would indicate that the owner would use his car on the track which would mean higher insurance rates. Although Rapid Transit would have the same effect. In the end, copy right infringement sounds about right.
