Omar None at all. Mechanical lifters require more frequent maintenance. The 440 had hydraulic lifters. Because the hemi made its power higher in the RPM range, keeping the lifters in adjustment became even more important. By, I believe, 71 Chrylser put hydraulic lifters in the Hemi. Additionally, the 440 made its torque lower in the RPM range, far more useful on the street. This is all just my opinion, based on my life, my experiences. 👍

Both are awesome cars!! Really should have raced a HEMI Challenger but nonetheless...Those are very rare Camaro's factory 500 +hp cars..They did run mid 11's brand new with slicks of the day that were equal to modern radials...so yeah 10's are a sure possibility..440 6bbl were 450'ish the 4bbl had 410(not the under rated 375 lol). My Dad has a 70 'Cuda 440 6bbl,bought it new in July 1970,he ran 11.70-11.80's 2 weeks later.. He added slicks of the day that had no more traction than modern radials, and he had headers(Camaro 427 had headers)...The Cuda got quicker mopar or then direct connection purple cam, head work etc.and was 10.90 car for several years.. But new with headers/slicks/carbs tuned to perfection he ran 11.70's-11.80's with 3.54 Dana rear diff..quicker with 4.10's as he lost to his buddy with the same car with 4.10's..Yes my Dad still owns it,it is like new and he is in his mid 80's and still cruises in it,not like when I was a kid or 10 or so years ago but he still drives it..I grew up with my Dads buddies with Mopars,Ford,GM all models and all performance engines, they raced all the time!! Remember a low compression 400 4bbl 1974 Road Runner can run 13.90's and they did thats a total smog motor that was stock! All old roat tests of performance back then were bogus as different testing methods, tracks if used(usually were not) were not like todays..Tires even slicks you can spin as they had no more traction than a modern radial..It's funny, road tests then say the car hooked yet it went sideways with 2 black marks and smoke pouring out the tires lol..it didnt hook, hook then meant spinning 2 car lengths not 6 so year 2 car lengths with slicks was hooking!

Just a point of interest for the hard core collectors that noticed the T/A 340 6 Pack fiberglass hood on a R/T. it was actually a factory replacement for some R/Ts when they opted for the shaker as there was a bit of a supply issue during production. The ZL1 was a monster, had know doubt it would clean the Changers clock.

The N94 hood was included with the T/A and optional on all 4bbl V8 challengers (except the SE) starting April 1970. I believe the shaker shortage was late ‘69/early 1970, so prior to the availability of the N94. So those cars received the regular R/T hood during the shortage. “The Black Ghost” is a good example of this, though, I don’t know anyone who actually called that car The Black Ghost until that documentary came out.

@@CarsAndZebras I beg to differ, you are correct the N94 was the standard & only T/A 6 Pack hood, The twin snorkle hood was the standard hood on the R/T's with the shaker optional However the fiberglass T/A hood was not a officially offered option, you could order it through the parts department & install it yourself, although I never ran across anyone that did. I have owned quite a few Challengers including one ordered with the shaker but delivered with the T/A hood & only learned about this because I fell into it by happenstance & soon discovered not many people were aware of it.

@@therealhonestabe7839 I was working just from memory, as I sold my 440 6 Pack back in 91 . When I bought the car in the 80s I was questioned many times about the originality of the T/A hood which is when I first heard of the anomaly & put it out of my mind since. I was aware they did build a few Hemi Challangers with the N96 hoodbfrom the factory so I was just speaking of my 440, which I had never seen until this video & it jumped out right away. It was apparent that you know muscle cars so I did do some research & found that they officially added the N96 hood as a option in April so I stand corrected. Interestly my car was produced before April, not sure how that figures into it but as I am still very active in our hobby this was the only other R/T Challenger I've seen with the N96 hood. Even though I still own some muscle cars, the one car I regret to this day selling was theat Challenger & it was a Plumg crazy 4 spd to boot. I do feel for the Mopar guys. this race is perfect illustration of what you're up against today. No big secret that these engines only appear "stock". They've been seriously stroked for bigger Cubic inches and while the heads look stock they've been "worked "too. Modern Cam shaft tech is clearly happening as well. For the 440 Mopar guy it's tough these days if you want to run a Carbureted engine resembling what was available back in the day vs your Ford and Chevy competition. The distant 3rd place seller that was Chrysler hasn't seen the same level of aftermarket improvement at a reasonable cost. As always it costs a whole lot more to be a Mopar guy. Can you build a Killer Hemi? Sure but the price will scare the crap out of all but the deepest of pockets. The 440? Not really even an option. It's limited flow heads on a Big Block could make respectable power when 500HP was consider BIG power because the torque available was killer down low due to what amount to small block flowing heads on a Big Block engine with 440 cubic inches of displacement. Today things are quite different than in decades past. Getting these quick times in the Video isn't even probing the limits. In less restrictive classes old school Big Block Chevy and Ford designes are now running stroked Combos with 500cu in plus and making 1,000HP NA with modern cam and head porting flow potential. This isn't gonna happen with Mopar's 440. The Hemi can do it but the $$$$$$ required in comparison to Chevy and Ford certainly tells you why the engine of choice these days is the Big Block Chevy.

  • @fd797

These cars all look really nice and stock, which surely is much of the fun and novelty And I love that. But, any of these races wanting to be competitive surely has to chase the rules to the nth degree. And any musclecar running deep into 11's surely is. As a simple example, I assume this Challenger, running a fiberglass T/A hood, must be allowed this lighter hood, because......it was technically a factory option on a Challenger (surely no factory R/T's got a T/A hood..). So, this hood is one of the allowable nth degree things to try and keep up with the bigger dogs? Regardless, any of the truly competitive cars we see, are pure race cars. That said, it is simply amazing to me how fast a stock appearing car running full exhaust, through some original heads, cam and valvetrain, carbs, and manifolds can be (whether or not even if these parts were a super rare option). Putting up the factory specs is fun, but fairly misleading in this gig. At least for the fastest of these, it is misleading; it is more what can be done, than what was done. Or what these are capable of. So, there is a next level story to be told. I would find as time goes on with your videos it might be entertaining, or perhaps as a sequel or closing chapters, if you can get some or all of the next level story and tell it. Find out what lengths the owners have or haven't gone through (for example, I suspect the Firebird at the end of this video probably was truly close to factory stock, whereas this Challenger or ZL-1 are finding the limits). How do they get a notoriously hoppy Camaro to launch like that. How do you even get any of these cars to launch on those original sized tires. These prepped cars are cranking 500-600 horsepower out of them - how are they doing it? Maybe the owners won't tell their tricks, but that would be way fun to know. It is fun to pretend and wish we were seeing factory cars doing factory performance. But, what we're seeing is next level. You're telling the factory story - tell the next one. The best of the factory combined and tuned and tweaked to amazing capabilities within some past-factory bounds.

Partial to my E bodies but that was an excellent pairing and congrats to the rat. I'd like to see that black 340 Demon line up to this COPO,bet it would be a close race. BTW,get your ass back across 8 mile😉

The blue Hemi Super Bee featured on the channel could get close to taking down the ZL1, but the conditions would have to be just right.
