1970 Dodge Challenger RT drag racing 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle PURE STOCK DRAG RACE - no commentary
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
1969 Chevy Chevelle Super Sport drag racing 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T
CORRECTION: The Chevelle actually won the race as it crossed the finish line first. Slightly slower ET, but a much better reaction time.
First car is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, the other a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. The Chevelle has a 396 V8. The Dodge Challenger RT has a 440 V8 with a 6-pack (three Holley 2 barrel carbs). The Chevrolet Chevelle is a rare L89 car with factory aluminum heads making 375 horsepower. The Challenger RT 440 is rated 390 horsepower. The Challenger has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and the Chevelle has a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. The Chevy Chevelle Super Sport has a very aggressive 4.88 rear gear, while the Dodge Challenger R/T has a set of 4.30 rear gears. Weight of the Chevy Chevelle SS including driver is 3690 pounds, while the Dodge Challenger is 3640 pounds. Both cars are rare, there were only 400 L89 Chevrolet Chevelles produced in 1969, and only 793 Dodge Challenger R/T 440-6 with automatic transmissions in 1970. Original testing by Hot Cars Magazine 2/1969 showed a 375hp Chevelle (L78 iron heads) run the 1/4 mile in 14.07 seconds @ 101 mph. However, they mentioned the stock Muncie shift linkage was terrible, and with a better option it should easily run in the 13s. The Challenger R/T 440-6 ran a 14.54 seconds @ 98 mph when tested by Hot Rod magazine 11/1969; it featured an automatic transmission and a 3.55 rear gears.

The 4.88 years in the Chevelle made it a very close race, as low gears make up for less HP / TQ against more powerful cars. Safe to say, if the Challenger had even 4:10 gears instead of 3:55's, he'd have won by 3 car lengths or 3/10's of a second.

No. The Chevelle is a rare 300 Deluxe which is a sedan (not a hardtop) and came with vent windows. One thing that is incorrect on this beautifully restored car is the anodized aluminum center grille molding. It has the correct 300 Deluxe grille (different than the Malibu and hdtp SS396 grille), but should not have the center bar aluminum molding. The grille actually has a simulated center molding cast into the plastic. So this car, in effect, has a molding on top of a molding. And it's a shame because holes were drilled to mount the molding and there's no going back. The grille is ruined.
