1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 454 - Freak of Nature

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1970 was the pinnacle of the original muscle car era. Horsepower ratings had soared to ridiculous levels. No muscle car had a higher on paper rating than the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 454. It was rated a whopping 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. This video explains why the LS6 powered 1970 Chevelle SS was one of the best muscle cars ever produced and why it's truly a freak of nature.
In this video, we talk about the Chevy Chevelle. The Chevelle was one of Chevrolet’s most popular models it has ever sold, it was one of the best-selling cars of its era, and it remains to be a model that is coveted by hot rodders and collectors alike.
The Chevy Chevelle was introduced on September 26, 1963 and built between model years 1964 and 1977. The Chevelle was available in a wide array of body styles; everything from a two-door sport coupe to a four-door estate wagon. Chevrolet, after realizing that their Impala model was seemingly growing by the foot, needed a mid-size model to fit in between it and the recently-released compact Nova/Chevy II.
The new car would also serve as a direct competitor to Ford’s mid-size Fairlane model and would be built on the then-new A-body platform along with its siblings the Pontiac Tempest, the Oldsmobile Cutlass, and the Buick Skylark. The Chevelle would also have GM’s widest array of trim options, spanning from the barest of entry levels to the most plush Chevrolet available (besides the Impala).

Definitely! I got, as my first car at 18 in 1980, its lesser known sister, a 1970 Monte Carlo SS 454 black over red. It had already been modded with performance cams and fuel delivery systems and was a beast to drive with barely containable torque but relatively subpar brakes. Fortunately, I survived but never should have sold it.

I agree. I think that size is a perfect compromise for the street, practical, comfortable and suitable for big block use. This particular year and model is the pinnacle muscle car for me, with the 1970 Buick GS and GSX Stage 1.

My friend's mom had a early 70's Chevelle Malibu 4 door when I was in high school in the mid 90's. I loved that car. Between that, their next door neighbor's hot rod Nova, and my mom's late 70's Dodge Aspen, I pretty much became a car guy. I was always interested in cars. But being able to ride in these 3 cars pretty much got me obsessed. Every time they were being worked on, I was right there watching and trying to help. If it wasn't for those cars, it's hard to tell where I'd be now. I definitely wouldn't be working in a body shop and customizing every vehicle I own.

My Mom bought a used '72 Chevelle around '76. 350. Nice car. I bought a '70 with a 307 in '80 after my '69 Charger got totalled. Right away i got a set of headers and dual exhaust, rally wheels and painted the grill black. Oh well,,, at least it looked and sounded good ;)

That was a fun great car. I sold it when I went to college in 1981 because I needed something with better gas mileage. This was a great video!

@@ThisOldCarChannel thanks again. I couldn't help but notice your logo has a '74 Trans Am. I had a '74 and a '76 and right now I have a '72 Firebird Espirts. One of the early Norwood pre strike car's. The original engine which I still have is a '71 so my car is an early '72 where they used some leftover '71 part's. I have a 400 out of a Trans Am with GTO heads. I'm the third owner and know the compete history of the car. I used to see it since 1978 and never thought they would sell it but they got in a bind and I bought it in 1999. It needs restored but has the original interior, carpet etc. I've driven it 3 times this week and it never falls to turn heads. I'm in a financial bind and am waiting for a settlement to pay off so I can give it a decent restoration and enjoy driving it as long as I can. I would love to see a story about the Pontiac Firebird's that had the small rear window. And then '74 and '75's. But I have liked or loved all you videos and share them with my car buddies. Thumbs up!!!

I think Impala was their most popular. You're basing this on sales numbers correct? Anyway Chevelles are awesome and you could easily do one Chevelle video for each generation Chevelle, making note with each video of sales figures, engine options, and what it was competing against. Just offering something for the suggestion box for when you're considering topics for a new video - a video for each generation would get my attention every time because each would presumably offer more specifics...

i hope u all know they built 2 different 454 in 1970 on is a bbc 450 hp at 485 torque the other was a ls 454 sb made by ls. the ls that u see today is the same block with a few upgrade for sensor ports and it was aluminum block i seen a real 70 ss ls 454 and it had cowl induction LS on the hood and u can not buy the emblem they only built 250 emblems which 212 went on the ls 6 454 and 12 on the ls 7 427 cars and the only way u can get the ls engines was as a crate engine. the code that everyone goes by just means it got a crate engine which both 454 was a crate engine at the time and it was put in the car by ls or known as gm racing division which started officially in 1970. if u look up the mark iv series and read the whole thing it talks about the ls that has different angle of pistons and push rods the only way u can change the angle of the pistons is with a new block which ended up being over 300 lbs lighter then the bbc with a stronger main bearing setup. i use to run a ls 454 sb on the drag strip in 1975

Chevelles are beautiful cars had a 66 Chevelle but wrecked it. Hard to get into one today without giving up a kidney. You can get into Monte Carlos 70,71,72 SS 454 versions 70,71 and 402 big blocks in all three years a bit cheaper. There basically the same car same interiors, Montes a little longer.

Like all Chevelles and Malibus the 1964-65 being my favorite because of the smaller size also like the 67 the best long trunk model 68 first year for redesigned model 71 model over the 70 because l prefer the back bumper and tail lights on the 71 over the 70 and 1978-81 G-body 2 doors and the 4 door and wagons until 1983
