1970 AFC Championship - Raiders at Colts - Curt Gowdy NBC Audio/Film Merge

This is a partial reconstruction of the 1970 AFC Championship game. This utilizes footage mainly from the two half-hour NFL Films programs that were produced for the game, and I've merged that with a crude recording of the original NBC TV broadcast audio, which featured Curt Gowdy, Kyle Rote, and Charlie Jones.
All of the big plays are here, along with a bunch of other ones. Still, this is by no means even close to all the plays. If I had to guess, I'd say I was able to find footage for maybe 35% of the total plays in the game. All of the plays presented here are in order as they occurred.
The TV audio had a lot of hiss to it and was difficult to understand at times. I applied noise reduction and applied a 'telephone' effect to it to bring out as much clarity as I could. This is as good as it gets, and it actually isn't that bad. It actually sounds better if you listen via speakers and not headphones. The audio is very rough though for a few plays when Blanda first enters the game in the second quarter, but it improves again. The second half seems better than the first.
I tried to incorporate as much interesting commentary as I could, and you really get a feel for the game this way. It was exciting and tense, and the Baltimore crowd was very loud. Unitas and Blanda, two legends facing off against one another.
Gowdy states that the Oakland Raider uniform numbers are hard to see, as they are silver against white and the sun is shining on them. There are a few times where he mentions the wrong player on a play because of this.
Another classic brought back to life. I've been wanting to do this for quite a while, but only recently got hold of the audio. I wish there was more footage available to flesh this out even more, but this is by far the best representation of the game you'll ever see/hear, unless you watched it live 52 years ago.

This game-matching powers from the AFL and NFL-seemed more like a Super Bowl than the actual Super Bowl, which matched two pre-merger NFL teams. They’d met in the January 1966 Playoff Bowl in Miami, with Baltimore crushing Dallas 35-3.

Amazingly, the colts didn’t have a facility of their own so during the season they used the stadium as their practice field which was a big reason it became a dirt surface by December & January. I’m guessing that was still better than playing on Astro turf in those days. The colts called it Astro dirt.

@@mouchiecat1 The NFL back then was run on shoestrings, nowhere making the big monies as they would in the future. I recall many many years ago a Wall Street Journal article about the Colts, which hinted that the owner was operating the team on-the-cheap. The tell-tale sign was with the team's uniforms looking rag-tag; with the NFL officials putting heat on the Colts organization to shape up with providing the players with new uniforms.

Despite Oakland losing this game, it's amazing how prolific a team they were for well over a decade. Seems like they were consistently in the AFL and AFC Championship game each year from the late 60s and 70s. They just ran into some really good Steeler teams.

They ran into the "Immaculate Reception," then the defending NFL champs in 1973. The 1974 AFC Semis, the "Sea of Hands" game, took too much out of Oakland. Their 29 yards rushing and three picks by Stabler sealed their fate in the AFC Championship game. I was never a Raiders fan, but always a solid supporter of the AFC. When they finally made a post-merger Super Bowl, my allegiance was satisfied by the way they manhandled the Vikings in SB XI. Their subsequent wins in SBs XV and XVIII were even better. Al Davis eventually ran this iconic franchise into the ground, aided by Amy Trask. The organization jerked around their Oakland fans as if they never existed, pulling up stakes for a Vegas pipe-dream that will never come true. I don't yearn for the old days of pro football, but no NFL fan base has ever screwed like old-school Raider fans.

Excellent work! Because of the difficulty in seeing Oakland’s silver numbers on the white jerseys, NBC got the Lions to wear white when they hosted the black-jersey Raiders on Thanksgiving 1970. Evidently the Colts wouldn’t agree to wear white in the AFC Championship (although they did wear white at home in 1964-1965). If the Raiders had beaten Baltimore, I’ll bet NBC would’ve induced the “home” Cowboys to wear white and the Raiders black in Super Bowl V. Instead, Dallas famously lost to Baltimore in what they’d call their “bad luck blue” jerseys.

You’re wrong about the SB5 uniforms. Although the home team had the option of wearing white or dark uniforms during the pre-season, regular season & playoffs the NFL still mandated that the designated home team had to wear dark uniforms in the SB. The NFC is the designated home team in the odd-numbered SBs. Therefore in SB5 the Cowboys, as NFC Champion and designated home team, were required by the league to wear their dark jerseys. The NFL changed the rule after SB5 so that, like in the rest of the season the designated home team could wear whatever color they wanted requiring the designated visitors to wear the opposite. Btw there is no way the Cowboys would have voluntarily wear their blue jerseys. 🤣

As a Baltimore Colts fan growing up, I was only 18 when they left, I can't get enuff of your videos, and hope that there are more of the Baltimore Colts coming... The Baltimore Colts have two of the top 10 defensive teams in NFL history : 1968 Baltimore Colts & 1971 Baltimore Colts. This team is the same defensive team basically. A tribute to them from Mr. Volsky might be in order as they are all but forgotten when the best defensive teams in NFL history are mentioned!! The 2000 Baltimore Ravens are in the top 10 All Time NFL defenses, as well! So, Baltimore has about 1/3 of the NFL's All Time defenses. Defense in Baltimore didn't start with Ray Lewis, it started with Mike Curtis and the Baltimore Colts...

Those of us who either lived through this ancient era, or gained some nostalgia for it from here and there, are a tiny minority of today's NFL audience. The differences we might enjoy in these games, including no gloves, ridiculous field conditions, vicious contact, etc., are of little interest to most fans. If those fans look at something like the career interception numbers for Blanda, Lamonica and Stabler, many end up considering them incompetent QBs instead of a product arising from a different offensive philosophy for the forward pass. Two of those three made it to Canton with more picks than scores, a standard that would put them out of the league now. It's for these reasons and others the NFL Network rarely shows games from the AFL-NFL merger era. They only entertain a certain segment of today's audience, and don't contribute to adding new fans, which remains a serious issue for pro football. You and I enjoy it, and we have KZread to thank for the opportunity. How long watching for free continues is a question yet to be answered. Thanks for your comment, it obviously got me going.

Colts had beaten the Bengals 17-0 in the prior playoff game at Memorial Stadium but Cook missed the '70 season with a shoulder injury (basically ending his career save for a brief cameo in '73)-you have to wonder if Cook was healthy would he have been able to solve the Colt defense? Stabler was a rookie in 1970 and his total NFL experience at the time of this AFC Championship was just 1 game two weeks prior against the 49ers. In that game he attempted 7 passes, completed just 2, and threw an interception. He was definitely the 3rd-string quarterback at that point and NO WAY were they going to throw him into the mix in a playoff game unless Blanda, who had TWENTY-ONE years of experience, got injured also.

Blanda was no slouch in that Championship game - the Raiders put up 17 points after he came in for an ineffective and injured Lamonica in the 2nd quarter. Ah! This was back in the TV era where local NFL games were blacked-out. *Even for the Championship Games!* The locals in Baltimore could not view this live. Possibly the Baltimore NBC affiliate would play a tape-delay of this game late Sunday night, such as what was done for the San Francisco 49ers game against the Dallas Cowboys. With this Raiders/Colts game, it's possible the New York City and Washington DC area hotels/motels got an uptick of business for that Sunday, as the Baltimore citizenry renting those rooms could view the game live on the NBC stations in those respective markets. I was living in the SF Bay Area at the time, with the 49ers vs Cowboys 1970 NFC Championship game, played in San Francisco, was blacked-out. The Bay Area people rented motel rooms in Fresno or Redding, California, to watch the game on TV live. The CBS affiliate in SF, KPIX, did rebroadcast the game late Sunday night. It was several years later that the Feds, the FCC, and the NFL came to agreements to televise the NFL local games, provided the game was sold-out 48 hour prior to kickoff.

@@danorthsidemang3834 The 1970 John Unitas sucked and was carried by his defense. Anyone who is honest acknowledges that! How did he do in SB 3 and SB 5? 14 for 33 for 198 yards and 1 lucky touchdown to John Mackey for 75 yards on a deflection and 3 interceptions. Then in the 1971 playoffs he threw 57 passes for a paltry 367 yards and ZERO touchdowns and 4 interceptions! In 1970 he wins a SB and goes 20 for 56! The defense allowed 30 points in 3 playoff games. From 1968 to 73 after his arm injury he threw 38 touchdowns and 64 interceptions! He sucked! The Unitas up to 1967 for his era was amazing. 243 touchdowns from 1957 to 67. The 1968 to 73 Unitas was awful carried by great defenses from 1968 to 71. The 1971 Colts won 10 of 14 games and Unitas and Morrall threw 10 touchdowns with 21 picks and sucked! They had a passer rating of 55 and yet won 10 games. The defense allowed 140 points in 14 games or 10 points a game! To suggest Unitas of 68 to 73 was better than the physical skills of a Mahomes as an example is ridiculous! Put down the booze and in that era, the best thrower of the football was Sonny Jurgensen who at age 40 led the NFC in passing and in 1972 to 74 at age 38 to 40 completed 66.1%, 60% and 64.1% at age 40 and retired! To be a plus 60% passer in that era was amazing and would be 75% today! In 1969 Jurgensen playing for Lombardi completed 62% of his passes leading the NFL with 3,102 yards but the Redskins defense stunk. In 1969 Unitas hit 54% of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 20 picks and sucked. Nevermind 2022, Unitas couldn't carry Sonny Jurgensen's jockstrap head to head in 1969. With a defense around him, Jurgensen was 11-2 playing for George Allen. In 1969 and 70, Jurgensen hit 61% of his passes for 45 touchdowns and 25 interceptions and Unitas hit 52% of his passes for 26 touchdowns and 38 interceptions. I watched in 1973 Kilmer get hurt against the Giants and Sonny came in and my late Dad said he's going to pick us apart! We were winning 24 to 13 and here comes Sonny! He went 12 for 15 for 135 yards and won the game with a late 16 yard touchdown. Amazing passing and accuracy at age 39. There was no better thrower of the football in the history of the NFL. In that era to be over 57% amazing! Sammy Baugh was amazing also hitting 56.5% of his passes from 1937 to 1952. To be able to complete over 56% from 1937 to 52 was amazing and forgotten. Unitas was a 54% passer! We need to grow up and be honest!
