1970-71 Dual 1209 Turntable Restoration

Ғылым және технология

Maybe not a total restoration but the 1209 went from mostly locked up to fully functional condition. I've updated the Thumbnail image to show the "United Audio" base that I ordered for the turntable.

I refurbish vintage turntables for enjoyment. Your video on this 1209 was very helpful, especially on using the protractor. Thank you.

hello , you have probably figured it out by now , but the stylus tip should be on the main crosshair intersection on the protractor grid , not anywhere along the centre line . there is lots of videos on the web of how to use them properly . the cartridge looks like a v15 shure cart which has a fine contact line stylus which is hyper sensitive to alignment so a little research on how to get the most from it might be a worthwhile endeavour. 😘😘

You are correct. My camera work wasn't very good on the cartridge adjustment procedure. I recently ordered a mirrored protractor to make it a little easier to do a proper alignment. That is a Sure V15 Series 3 cartridge. I moved that cart to my AR XA turntable and put a relatively modern Audio Technica AT120Eb on the Dual.

These turntables take special lubricants and adhesion oils. Some parts use 10w30 motor oil. But if you use the wrong oil on the wrong part, then you will have problems.

Currently I use just a few oils on turntables. 3in1 standard 20W oil for most general lubrication, and 3in1 electric motor oil for the electric motors. I also occasionally use Singer 10W oil when I need a very light weight oil and 30W non-detergent (air compressor) oil if I need something heavier. I generally try to not use automotive engine oil. What do you like to use on turntables?

I have a Dual 1015, has a similar mechanism and Idler wheel. I find the pitch adjustment isn't that good at on the fly pitch adjustments. I also find that often if you get 33 1/3 right, 45 will be a bit out. Once warmed up, the wow/flutter will settle down a fair bit. Great little turntables once they are all tuned up.

Hi Brendan and thanks for the comments on the video. It is common to have to adjust the fine pitch on Dual idler wheel turntables when changing speeds. As you can see in the video its just a manual mechanical adjustment. That's part of the charm of the old vintage equipment. If you are having trouble getting the speed adjusted properly you may want to check the idler wheel mechanism to make sure it is moving up and down freely.

I have the 1218 which I believe from the same period they must have made quite a lot of models during that period for some reason

Thanks for subscribing to the channel. Dual did have many models of turntables back in the 60's 70's. I'd love to find a chronology of all the models .

Looks like I know the details of your head better than the Dual turntable 😅 Thanks for the tutorial on relub and tonearm setup. I'll do it on mine soon. I suspect mine is pretty much jammed because of sticky grease, but I've got casing and plastic lid in ery good condition. BTW what's the speed measurement app please ?

Nice job! Just wondering if the Shure V15 is a bit of a mismatch for that tonearm? The V15 was a top of the range high-compliance cartridge usually mated to a low mass tonearm like the SME 3009 arm back in the 70s.

Thanks for the comments. You are probably right about the V15, it has a very light tracking force. I've done some cartridge swapping since that video. I moved the Sure V15 series 3 over to my AR XA turntable. The Dual 1209 currently has a relatively modern Audio-Technica AT120eb cartridge. I also have a Sure V15 series 2 on my Thorens TD125 with a Rabco SL-8E liner tracking tonearm. I believe that is the original cartridge from about 1968. Unfortunately I don't have any nice SME tonearms. Maybe someday.

I was wondering where I could order any parts for this type of record player. Specifically the needle, on mine it’s hanging by a thread and might need to replace the whole cartridge.

You can replace the stylus (needle) on most cartridges. If you know what model of cartridge you have you can just google a replacement stylus. If you can't find a reasonable priced replacement stylus, you may want to replace the cartridge with a new one. Two of my favorites are the Audio Technica AT-VM95E for about $70, and the Ortofon 2M Red for about $100. There are cheaper and much more expensive cartridges out there but these two sound great for the price. You can order both of these on Amazon.

The cause of that issue could be a gummed up mechanism like mine had.
