    It runs really good. The good thing about this video is that you two did not blow it up like some others on here did a while back to an 8V71 and if I remember right, the other one was a 16V71. Got them running and then disconnected the governor on ‘em and let them blow. Made me absolutely sick.

    Those engines will run forever. Had one in a fishing vessel 12-71with over 100k hours on it, still going strong. Had multiple 3 and 4-71 generator sets do the same. Leaked oil like a champ too. Ive always heard that you can hang a picture of a detroit up on the wall, leave come back an hour later and there will be oil running down the wall. Lol

    My very first truck was 1966 GMC Cracker Box, Tandem, Sleeper cab, 8v71 318 Detroit, Chrome Stacks, 10 Speed Road transmission, 38,000 rears, Cooper Tires. Paid sixty six hundred dollars for it in 1969, purchased from Truck Enterprises. Inc. we owned that truck for 15 years. We bought that truck to haul our small grains off the farm to grain mills but mostly it just hauled ass.

    Daniel Boone's Logging videos Well now, that truck was the first road tractor we owned. My Grandfather had ICC authority between Richmond and Danville Va. but they never owned tandems. His five sons were his truck drivers until my generation and WWII came along. Grandfather hauled a lot of moonshine. My father drove back then but insisted I never get involved in moonshine. When we sold our trucking business we had all R Model Mack’s. Those Mack 300 engines with six speed transmissions would “pull a house down”. By that time our business was almost 100% Size and Weight authority for 48 States. We only have two trucks now that we use to haul logs for our sawmill. Both single axel but all I can handle at my age. Good luck with your truck videos. Have you got anymore?

    I'm building a 1\25 scale White Western Star tractor. Bought the Super Boss drag truck and swiped the 12v71 with twin turbos. Put it in the Western Star! All I had to do was flip the exhaust manifolds left and right so the turbos were at the front of the motor instead of the rear. Would been a pain in the ass the rebuild the firewall from scratch to make them fit. Plus I think it would have made the cab hot as hell in a real world application. Love looking at these videos of OLD IRON!!! Get my inspiration from them!!!!

    It’s really cool to see the old trucks up and running again. I have to say that speaking as a guy who has driven trucks like that when they were new or near new it wasn’t the glamorous thing it appears to be maybe you had a am radio, maybe a air ride seat,more times than most. Spring ride suspension,definitely noisy and normally under powered. If you were lucky someone put Jacob’s engine brake heads on it, but it was a luxury like air ride suspension and air ride cabs. Don’t get me wrong, definitely made the driver I am today. You really had to want to drive back then with a professional attitude and integrity. But I wouldn’t give up my 900L with 600 horsepower and studio sleeper for more than a hour driving one of those oldies lol

    They really are. So many different combinations, types, configurations, and they are tuff engines. I was leery of the truck being worth saving, dump trucks don't just get parked and left one day usually unless they have issues. But it was a good chance finally catch up with Daniel and I thought firing up an old 2 stroke in an old truck would be skadill worthy!!!

    The ultimate for automotive use was the Silver 8V92TTA - 475hp (& 6V92TTA) as far as Detroit Diesel 2 strokes they had it all. Turbo feeding into the blower, a bypass blower, aftercooler under the blower and DDEC1 (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control). TT means Tailored Torque not twin turbo Some 8V92s did have twin turbo for generator use and perhaps marine but AFAIK not for automotive. They had 475hp. Very easy to get more power out of. Here's one from Australia. They were popular there until Inline 6 4 strokes took over. A good sudy of a Silver 8V92TTA: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIt6pI9vZaybqcY.html

  • @ThePaulv12

    @ThePaulv12

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Scott E yeah only the Silver Series 8V92tta ('tt' means tailored torque or similar not twin turbo and 'a' means aftercooled so an intercooler under the blower) had 475hp. The other 8v92 turbos pre dated the Silvers and as you correctly point out aren't 475hp rated. Marine had twin turbos for sure but I've never seen one in automotive use though they could be modified i suppose.

    vice grips on the control tube... that won't work with 2-screw levers. If an injector seizes, the whole engine is stuck at that fuel setting. You would have to bend the lever on the stuck injector before the control tube would move. It would be a heck of a lot easier to service the emergency shutdown so it was functional.

    Is someone going to restore it? Not too many of those old White Western Stars left, and it's got that Detroit in it too. Doesn't get much better than that.

    I used to own a 67 white with 220 Cummins and a blower. 10 speed with tandems. It lives about 15 miles from me here in Virginia. I'm sure it could be bought as they haven't used it since I drove it over there 10 years ago.

    It is the same cab. The cab originally was a Diamond Rio, and then through acquisitions, White Bros, Autocar, etc. ended up as Western Star. I had a '99 Western Star for years, still see it now and then
