1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Walkaround with Steve Magnante | Cruise as is, or restore to 302?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This Car is headed to Barrett Jackson Las Vegas with NO RESERVE. Tune in on June 30th
Lot 5652.1 info: www.barrett-jackson.com/Event...
While this 1969 Mercury is currently a great cruiser, with its swapped 351ci V8 and Automatic transmission, it originally came from the factory as an G code "Eliminator"; meaning a boss 302 motor and 4 speed manual transmission. If you cant drive a manual, this may be enticing! For someone willing to put in the work, this Cougar could make a great project to return to its factory spec.

First I owned an completion orange ‘69 my senior year in high school. Mine was the 428SCJ Ram Air with Drag pack option Detroit Locker. Sold that off after a year then bought a ‘71 mustang Mach 1. Had to leave that in Iowa after locking up the 351C 4V engine. So back to a another Eliminator 1970 351C 4V that I pulled the heads and camshaft. Switched to a boss camshaft and modified the heads to Boss with screw in studs, guide plates, and single groove valves and boss valve springs. I think I still have the scare on my head from that center grille on the ‘70 hood.

It’s hard to remember that far back but in the late sixties one of my friends at Church special ordered a Cougar. I’m not sure if it was like this on but he got all the options including custom blended paint. It was really sharp but when he raised the hood I saw an engine that I’ve never seen before ! He said that was a special order too! It was a double overhead cam that’s similar to the engines in today’s Mustangs!! I did some research and found out that only Lincoln and Cougars were a test bed for new engines!! He had a super rare prototype that he kept 20 years and moved away.

Man, that's a good looking car! It'll make someone a great driver, cruiser or casual show car! I have a few corrections and clarifications on information presented... -There were 2,250 Eliminators built in 1969. -All Cougars received the lower shock tower reinforcement, unlike the Mustangs where only Boss and big block cars got them. -All Eliminators had a dash tach. Boss 302's typically received the 8k tach while the other engines used a 6k tach (*some factory errors have been documented). -Staggered rear shocks were not part of the Competition Suspension, but were a standard component on all Boss 302 and 428CJ / 4-speed Cougars. All other engine /transmission combinations received non-staggered rear shocks (*some factory errors have been documented). -That's not the original gas cap, although it is pretty cool! - This car appears to have the correct '69 Eliminator rear spoiler, which has a different pedestal spacing from that used on the '69 Mustangs. The '69 rear spoilers are also different than the rear spoiler used on the '70 Mustangs and Eliminators. The '69 Eliminator rear spoiler is not currently reproduced, but the '70 version is. Finally, do NOT go by just the blacked out grille, hood scoop or stripes to determine whether or not a car is a true Eliminator. Each of those items can be easily cloned. I recommend ordering a basic Marti Report for about $20, as well as contacting the Eliminator Registry for information about any known history of an Eliminator you are considering purchasing. These two things may prevent you from inadvertently purchasing a clone instead of the real deal.

Yes, the VIN gets the win: 9 for 1969 model year, F for Dearborn, MI assembly, 91 for Cougar two door hardtop, G for 302 V8 with four barrel, and the rest is the production sequence. It's always good to see the VIN tag as well as the door tag for all of the codes. So with that said, we got the tag, we can brag: 65A for Cougar two door hardtop, 9 for Bright Yellow exterior paint which was only an Eliminator color, 5A for Charcoal Black Corinthian Vinyl and Charcoal Black Levant Pattern vinyl which again was specific to the Eliminator, 07E for May 7, 1969 production which was a Wednesday, DSO of 41 which was Chicago, IL sales district, S for 3.50:1 locking rear differential, 5 for four speed manual/2.78 wide ratio.

Figure a correct '69 Boss 302 engine and transmission will probably set you back $20k or so, depending on how "factory correct" you want to go. That will put you around $70k into this car - and it will still be unrestored. You could probably get it repainted again for around $20k or so, and maybe also correct some of the other details that are missing / wrong. So for about $90k you could have a very nice '69 Boss 302 Eliminator with a non-numbers matching (but date correct) drivetrain. Also bear in mind that this car has had sheet metal repairs done in the past, and many of the date codes don't align properly with the car's build date. So for the discerning collector it may not fetch top dollar in the future.
