The Ford Torino is an automobile that was produced by Ford for the North American market between 1968 and 1976. It was a competitor in the intermediate market segment. The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1970. After 1968, the Fairlane name was retained for the base models with lower levels of trim than those models which wore the Torino name. During this time, the Torino was considered a subseries to the Fairlane. By 1970 Torino had become the primary name for Ford's intermediate, and the Fairlane was now a subseries of the Torino. In 1971 the Fairlane name was dropped altogether, and all Ford intermediates were called Torino. This name was one of several originally proposed for the Mustang while in development.[1] The Torino was essentially a twin to the Mercury Montego line.
Most Torinos were conventional cars, and generally the most popular models were the 4-door sedans and 2-door hardtops. However, Ford produced some high-performance versions of the Torino by fitting them with large powerful engines, such as the 428 cu in (7.0 L) and 429 cu in (7.0 L) "Cobra-Jet" engines. These cars are classified as muscle cars. Ford also chose the Torino as the base for its NASCAR entrants, and it has a successful racing heritage.
The 1969 Fairlane/Torino saw some cosmetic changes, and there were quite a few performance oriented changes. Ford performed the typical minor styling adjustments, but overall the 1969 models were similar in appearance to the 1968 models. The grille was revised slightly, and now had a more prominent centre dividing bar, while the taillights were restyled on non-fastback models to be similar to the 1969 Ford full-size cars. Fastbacks retained the 1968-style taillights and rear panel. All models above the Fairlane, had an aluminium dividing bar that ran across the rear panel, between the taillights and inline with the reverse lights on SportsRoof models.[9]
Some automotive literature list these models as "Torino Cobra", with the Cobra being a sub-series to the Torino. The Cobra has the same body code as a Fairlane 500, so some sources refer to these cars as the "Fairlane Cobra". The car itself did not have any Fairlane or Torino nameplates on its exterior or interior, although 1969 NASCAR entrants were labeled "Torino Cobras." For the purpose of this article, only "Cobra" will be used, as Ford marketed the car as such in 1969 without Fairlane or Torino attached.
The engine line-up was slightly revised for 1969. All models, except Torino GTs and Cobras, came standard with a new larger 250 cu in (4.1 L) I-6 engine. The larger displacement produced more power and torque than the 200 cu in (3.3 L) engine. Optional engines included the 302 cu in (4.9 L)-2V (standard on GTs), the new for 1969 351 cu in (5.8 L)-2V Windsor, 351-4V Windsor, 390 cu in (6.4 L)-4V, and the 428 cu in (7.0 L)-4V Cobra Jet (standard on Cobras). The 428 CJ was available with or without the Ram Air Induction package, however, those with Ram Air still carried the same advertised power rating. The 428 CJ without Ram Air, came with the following items: 80-ampere heavy-duty battery, 3.25:1 open differential, heavy-duty cooling package, 55-ampere alternator, chrome valve covers and dual exhaust. The Ram Air 428 CJ included all of the above, but had a 3.50:1 open differential, and the functional hood scoop. With Ram Air, "428 Cobra Jet" emblems were placed on each side of the hood scoop; without Ram Air, "428" emblems were placed on the front fender. The 428 Cobra Jet had a 735 cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor.

I think this is the same kit I built back about 15 years ago as Richard Petty's car. It was a nice, easy to build, kit and the racing parts, while generic, were good and I was happy with the results.

I took the monogram 69 Talladega kit and built a Richard Petty. I got me a spare to build a street car. I seen this 1 was coming out and got mad at myself LOL. I wouldn't have had to scratch build the roll cage. But it turned out great. I would like to see you do this 1 as a racecar.

I used this kit (I am pretty sure) some years back to build the Petty car. The Revell/Monogram/Promodeler kit is really the way to go, though, as it is a vastly better kit, even if it is factory stock. I started using the ex Pro Modeler kit to make the Mad Max V-8 interceptor. The Australian Ford Falcon used the same body shell as the Torino Cobra, but with a flatter hood and a different front clip (for the movie).

I built this around 2002 as part of a Muscle Car Set that also included a 69 Barracuda and Hurst Oldsmobile 442. It only lasted a week because the front wheel mounting pins were too small so the wheels kept falling off, and my paint job was untidy.

I counted at least 15 kits that I bought after I saw you build them not counting the Salvino JR kits (I belong to the Salvino JR's builders club so we get the new car every month). Hello ! As always great builds at just the skill level you need to show this stuff at ! I would like to make a note that 99% of your AMT, MPC, Revell, and Monogram kits I at one time or another build as a youngster and a first editions. I have see so many of these repop kits, that look exactly the same as when I opened my “new” kit right after Christmas or just saving my allowance for 2 weeks to buy a “NEW” kit. I need to know one process that you do on a constantly use the I just missed in your review, paint, and final assembly on these gorges kits. Can you please explain the procedure for glossing the body ( with or without glass) with Futura floor wax. I LOVE the high gloss it gives your builds that extra special touch. How do you go about laying floor shine on a painted kit body? To get that super smooth extra shiny finish? I know this information is in your builds somewhere, I have just not found it. On a lighter note, the girl I was dating in the early 80’s worked at the MPC factory in Mt. Clemens Michigan. Many many days I would drop and pick her up from work at MPC. They also made Lionel trains and the extras there. I have see how the entire process works from dumping kit color plastic “ pellets” into an injection machine just waiting for the molds to come along. Mold extraction was not a big deal, quality control was a huge issue and was performed on EVERY KIT released to the public. Fortunately I was one of the few lucky ones that received kits FRESH off the line, even before the plastic shrink wrap was applied. Many times I would try to snag those factory mess up kits, but I could never get to see until an inspector had them slated for the remold melting hopper. What a life’s experience that was to actually see the process that happen to my favorite ( and just about all) of my very favorite kits in their virgin stage of production !

Great review Chris. I have this kit and would like to give an update. This is not a kit for a novice. The wheels do not fit properly, the ride height is pretty far out of spec. The wheelbase, actually the chassis, doesn't fit correctly to the body which is warped considerably. Having said this the finished model is a good addition to my shelf, just not an out of box experience. The decals are awesome but somewhat delicate. My dad bought a gt brand new in 69, which ran great until a dumbass 16 year old slammed the shifter into park at 35 mph (yeah it was me)

I wish they had re-released the Torino GT alongside this one. Pretty rare that GT. From what I read, you could build it convertible as well. I didn't knew of that Torino 'till I saw one at one show. Again, another good kit that would've been improved by modding the grill to allow clear lenses for the headlights and by removing the 1969 on the bumper where the plate is put down.

This kit has been around a long time and has been hacked up and modified a few times. It was originally a 68 Fiarlane Torino and later AMT cut the body back to make a 68 Torino Pace Car. After that, the kit was redone with new parts to make a 69 Cobra, and that is essentially the kit here. Over the years, as AMT liked to do, they did swap out wheels and tires from time to time.
