1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air: Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 244
In aviation, the term Mach 1 refers to the speed of sound. THIS Mach 1 is the fanciest of the various Mustang packages available for 1969, and it features the brutal 428 Cobra Jet V8 with Ram Air induction, and it’s also quite a ride... from the Brothers Collection.

    I recall when NHRA officials kicked the Cobra Jets into the higher Stock class because they were running 13.8 second ETs. After complaints from the competition, Hot Rod magazine got involved so, they went to see Ronny Wood at RAD Auto Machine to see just how much power it really made. They dyno'ed one @ 365 hp 465 lb.ft. Surprisingly, that was about 60 hp. less than the 1968 Cobra Jets, when Ford fitted those CJ's with 427 R-code heads, factory race cams, police Interceptor intake and Holly 735 cfm carbs.

    I'm more of a Mopar guy, but I'd love to own a Mach 1 just like my dad had. His was a 1969 R-code 428 CJ with a 4-spd and paint code WT6135: special order yellow from the Rainbow of Colors promotion. He got tipsy one night, so my mom had to drive him home. She said she left rubber at every light in OKC because the clutch was so stiff.

    I still own my 69'Dodge i bought 35 yrs ago and am hardcore Mopar. In 75' i owned a 57' Ford Fairlane 2 dr. post car. I bought a 69' Mach 1 428 SCJ 4 spd. car from the insurance company that was totaled when the guy rapped it around the tree for $500..........that's right.... $500. Dragged it home and took the engine and tranny out of the Mustang and put it in the 57". I think i got around $100 for the shaker assembly and another $100 for the hood. Remember,these cars were a dime a dozen back then. After i sold all the other pieces i think i made about a $400 profit plus had an awesome drivetrain for that car. Let me tell you.....i beat on that car till it screamed for mercy. Not one problem with the engine and i took out the toploader after i blew the main shaft and went to the wrecker and got another top loader for $100. Awe....those were the days!

    Me too. I was raised a Mopar man because my grandfather and my dad always drove Plymouths, but my dad did own one Ford when I was a kid...... a 68 1/2 428 CJ/ 4 speed Mustang. Im pretty sure it was a GT. But man what an awesome car that was. Had the 3.91 rear axle. Man if I had all the awesome cars I got to ride in and drive as a kid I'd be a really happy man LoL

    Car and Driver mag in 1968, when they reviewed and tested the new 69 Mach 1 found that they got faster times from the auto than the manual. The auto allowed for easier control of the power and wheel spin, although it still broke loose even as it shifted to top gear. Old tyres were not up to the task of handling 440lb of torque so the auto box helped smooth things out. My scj is an auto. In fact all 3 of my current mustangs are. They are much easier to control leaving both hands free for the steering. I never got on with any manual Mustangs. Personal taste.

    I had probably the most "Fun " with the Mach 1. I had a 69 1/2 Super CJ Mach 1 with GT package on top. I was actually looking for a Porsche and stumbled on an extremely good deal on a repossessed Mustang. The car was ordered with everything. . I'd know it was a SCJ until numbers were ran before I sold it . It was black with red interior . The car was stock but it did have traction bars . I wasn't into muscle cars and I was a dirt rider and wanted something quick that could handle. It was quick but didn't handle . The front end was heavy so I replaced the GT chromes with Shelby performance rims . I also replaced the stock shifter with a Hurst comp plus and later replaced the front coils with harder coils to help me from crushing my oil pan . I was 18 and had a bad crash on a dirt bike which put me out of riding for a couple years. The street was my dirt track . The street had different pavement and turns ,but the only difference was the Mustang was like the heaviest bike on the track. At first the only thing that impressed me was the brakes , power and how cool it looked. Unfortunately for the car I was a Steve McQueen fan and the car was going to prove everything in the movie Bullet. Racing on the street today I realize how reckless it was ,but the Mustang drew many cars in for a run. I wasn't a motor head but a pretty stupid and good driver. I know every pluses and negatives of the car, and it was just a car to me and I was out to prove it's status as the King of the Mustangs. I never had a passenger when I pushed it to the limits ,and sometimes I wasn't even racing . One night after fresh rubber at 2:00 in the morning I took it to a road with two easy bends after a rain . The first bend 80 the next bend at about 90 and it broke into a full spin . I knocked out my right front rubber and went off the road just missing a telephone pole. Stupid but that's what you did on a bike. But you're "Safe 'in a car so a little faster your good 🙄. The Mustang wasn't the Porsche I wanted and I didn't want a straight line car so I lost respect for the car,and now I didn't care about damaging but worked on it's pluses. My car had the drag pack and low gear ratio . It didn't do much over 115 and that was probably good or I wouldn't be here. I concentrated on it being a light to light car or like a hole shot. I came up against everything and rarely lost. Many cars I ran were built but I didn't need HP. HP had little to do with winning, but I figured out how to get it to move out of the bottom. The Mustang was light in the rear so I always had the tank full and no passengers pushing it all the way. I was always beat in third gear. I was beat but very close by a Trans am Super duty and a built Camaro 350 Cowell induction but I could tell HP had nothing to do with it . Both guys were really nice and ran me twice and I really think they were hopeful I'd take them. I figured out later that second gear was a waste of time,so I skipped it and the car grabbed and felt like a sling shot. I never lost after that. Racing is physiological also . If you got the guy all wound up he'd totally mess up and just spin. Some didn't have traction bars and would hop too. I almost had a 442 jump on me . Pavement changed a lot and if you didn't get it you lost. I also had many low displacement cars that were very fast and they could take a corner. My trick with the Mustang was to come in hard just before the turn and hit my brakes hard and fast and then do the rest of the corner, like tall bikes today. I never was a motor head and didn't get the guys that had automatic transmissions or like mine big blocks in small cars. The SCJ Torino could handle it and I nicely passed on even trying to run one,but I'd kill my car against a Vett and never lost. I'd do anything . I ran one into a hill and kept the pedal down and crushed my pan. I did that a lot. One night I picked up a Porsche on a two lane 55 mph highway . We started rolling at 55. I'm not sure how fast we were going but I was driving the wrong car. I couldn't shake him from a car length behind me . Some bends I could hear the rubber about to break but I think he was adjusting his tie. The road straightened out but there was a rough bridge and slight lift. He was still there so I held the pedal to the floor . The car went air born and the tires chirped three times before it straightened out . I just got ahead about three lengths and he backed down . I slowed up and I let him pass and he gave me thumbs up. I was so scared and tasted steel in my mouth and my neck was throbbing. That was it and I was done .I thought I just got a free pass at living and never did that again. A lot of the muscle cars sixed up well ,but they were all death traps and nothing performed like the European cars and even the 240 Z was very fast. There are many things I understood about the Mustang but nobody knew anything unless they put it to the limit instead of washing and leaving in the driveway. I should've washed it more it was the best looking muscle car on the road. The thing also I liked was how it cruised at 60 and the dash lights at night. Mine was very rare and the council had my oil and amp gauge and a red and blue light anytime I touched the brake's . I had two horses in the front grill . Next to the clock it had a chrome snake . I had air conditioning and it didn't phase the performance. The seats were so comfortable I fell asleep driving it twice. It had the pop out GT gas cap and wheel covers . The only Mustang after I wanted was the Boss 302. F those big blocks. Just one other little thing the hood pins weren't for looks . 😎

    When they brought out the 2005/1969 tribute, they made the high beam location the "fog lights". I must have got flashed at least 100 times by people who thought I had my high beams on. I finally rewired the car and made the center pair of lights true high beams and mounted fog lights down low where they belong. Ford should have known better, they did build the original.

    Love this car, but never liked the steel rallye wheels; the Magnum 500s looked so much better. Also, since this car is so close to original, I'd have to remove all of the MSD stuff and the oversized oil pan and return it as close to stock-looking as possible. The brothers seems to have quite a collection of really nice '69-70 Mustangs (you can see many of them sitting in the warehouse in this video), but this one is my absolute favorite: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zo1rlsWoZty5ZqQ.html. It was from Episode 9 of MCOTW, and it was a Gulfstream Aqua '69 Mach 1, with a factory sunroof. I've wanted a '69 Mach 1 since I was a kid; had a chance to buy a '69 or '70 Mustang (can't remember which it was) with a 428 CJ and a shaker hood when I was 16 (1977), but it was a bit rough and I didn't have the money or skills to fix it up. Probably a good thing, as I would have probably wrecked it and killed myself. No telling what it would have been worth now (if we had both survived).

    There are lots of theories on what the true bhp of the 428cj/scj was. They vary from some saying that 335 was the true hp, others say that the 68 rating of 360hp on the Shelbys was true. But that was with the Police Interceptor 428. The truth is that the power is around the 400hp mark, likely around 410. This is evident by considering the torque of 440lb. Remember that hp is a calculation from measured torque. So 335hp is certainly not true. And the Dragpack scj had no additional power. Just the ability to handle it better. I have had my Dragpack scj for 20 years and it has never had any hp. Still not on the road. My other projects keep getting in the way.

    To clarify a couple of things- the rear wing was not part of the Mach 1 package. It could be ordered and installed by the dealer, though. The confusion may come from Ford referring to the built in spoiler(ducks ass) on all SportsRoofs. All 1969-70 Mach 1's came with the 9 inch rear end. The Mach 1 was basically an exterior appearance package limiting the base motor to a 351 2V of greater, added sound deadener , upgraded suspension, deluxe interior with a rim blow steering wheel. In 71 content was greatly reduced with the base motor being a 302 2V, standard interior and 8 inch rear end. The 69-70 was such a hit and a good value that it negated the GT and more Mach 1's were built than standard SportsRoofs. I have a 69 Candy Apple Red Mach1 with the base H Code 351 2V, FMX tranny and disc brakes.

    On a previous video you mentioned that the ram air scoop doesn't work because the pistons move at hundreds of miles an hour. However, in a car with a 4" stroke at 6,000 rpm the Pistons move at about 50mph. Not to mention that even if you weren't going as fast as the Pistons it still helps to move air through the system.

    Aldo Why is it below atmospheric? I have never heard of this concept before. I am not saying you are wrong, I just don't know. I know that ram air scoops work to some degree because my parents bought a Subaru SUV a few years ago and the air is drawn from just above the grille although the scoop from the outside is invisible. Cowl induction works differently. It draws from a "resivour" of air built up on the windshield. The Chevelle also came with option cowl induction.

  • @stewieiommi

    @stewieiommi

    6 жыл бұрын

    The air in the middle of the hood is not "below atmospheric". At speed, air is deflected upwards by the front of the vehicle. Unless a hood scoop is very tall, such as the older 'Pro Stock' style scoop, it's out of the stream of fastest moving air, so no "ram" effect. There is still benefit because the car breathes outside air, as opposed to under-hood air heated by the engine and exhaust manifolds. That's the purpose of the grille-positioned intake in your parent's Subaru as well.
