1969 Chevelle SS396 L78 vs 1969 Plymouth GTX 440!!! Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 375hp L78 4-speed vs 1969 Plymouth GTX 440 (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race)
The first car is a 1969 Chevelle SS396, but not just any Chevelle. This is a 396 L78... so just a little more horsepower than the base 396 (ok, a lot more). It faces off against a mean 1969 Plymouth GTX with a 440. Both cars are absolutely fantastic.
Remember, both cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so please check out their website: www.psmcdr.com
Also make sure you check them out on Facebook!

Correction: The specs shown are correct for the actual cars drag racing ('69 Chevelle, '69 GTX440), but the cars first pictured in the staging lanes are incorrect (a different L78 Chevelle and a '67 GTX Hemi were accidentally posted). Did anyone notice??? Thanks for hanging in there. You guys are awesome!

I always liked GM better then Dodges when it came to racing. I like Chevy better then Dodge over all although I had a couple of Dodges when I was young. I had a 71 340 4 speed swinger. It was very fast. And I had a roadrunner 440 6 pack. I sold the road runner to a dealer in Ardmore Oklahoma for $700. It was a 1972 and it had 18000 miles on it and was in perfect condition. And that was in 1974. No one wanted them then. We had a gas crisis cars were lined up miles at service stations. I bought it about four months before I sold it at the Dodge dealer in Oklahoma City used. I give $1200 cash for it off the lot. Can you believe that. I watched the same car sale on TV for over $160,000 a couple of years ago.

Love the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Racing series. I prefer it over any of the NHRA pro classes with their one car looks identical to every other car, no brand recognition whatsoever, completely homogenous lineups. THIS is excellent drag racing with iconic muscle cars that make drag racing fun to watch again...thanks!

Both of these are awesome rides. 68-69 is definitely my favorite Chevelle body style and the L78 396/375 was the top engine you could get in a Chevelle SS in 69 unless you went the COPO route and ordered the L72 427. But if I had to choose one I'm taking the 69 GTX because B-Body Mopars have always been my favorite muscle cars. My dad bought a Roadrunner brand new in 69 with the 383/727 auto and 3.55 rear axle. His brother(my uncle) was a Pontiac man and had a 66 GTO with the 389 4bbl and a 4 speed and he used to get so pissed off that he could never beat Dad's Roadrunner and he paid $800 more for his GTO in 1966 than my dad paid for his Roadrunner in 1969. The base model Roadrunner and Super Bee were the best bang for the buck muscle car you could buy during that era. You got alot of car for right around $3,000 depending on options. I think the base price of a Roadrunner was $2,800 and a Super Bee was about $100 more. I believe the only difference was the Super Bee had carpet and the Roadrunner came with rubber floors

@@dv7431 Well Dave, you would be wrong about that. The fact is the mid 80s started seeing the return of performance, fox body mustangs, 3rd gen camaro and trans ams among others. The C4 corvette in ZR1 trim was in phase 1 of development and actually installed in C4 platforms. The fact is the 1990 ZR-1 broke the 24 hour world speed record at just under 175 mph. A showroom stock LT5 with the throttle limited to 70% of wot. The record still stands for an actual production car that was released to the public. Porsche tried to break it and failed, Ford tried to break it and failed among others. Finally it took a prototype V-12 VW to break the record and it was purpose built. Drag racing was alive and well all through the 80s, I was driving a 1968 firebird with a LS6 bored. 60 over with 13 to 1 compression a tunnel ram with two 850 holley carbs traveling through a muncie 4 speed. There were many more tracks than there are now because some developer decides to build a development beside the dragstrip and then whines about the noise. When your generation builds a production car that breaks the 24 hour world speed record let me know. Meanwhile I will be cruising in my 1990 ZR1 and enjoying the fact it proved itself and yes it is from the 80s.

Anyway, one night (and this was in the early 70's) my buddy and I were drinking beer and smoking some weed, and decided to get on the highway and raise a little hell. Stopped the car wanged the engine dumped the clutch (the car had a vertical gate shifter) banged 2nd banged 3 rd banged 4th and missed the gear, remember I was drunk and stoned, scattered rods all over the highway. A couple days latter pulled the engine, the cam came out in 3 pcs, a piston pin was sticking out of the block, both heads were junk. Lesson... don't over rev a 396, lol

Thing about these older cars is the horsepower "ratings" weren't really accurate chevy said 375 but for all we know it coulda made 500 they were rated this way for 2 main reasons 1. Insurance. It was often hard for vehicles making for than 1 hp per cubic inch to get insured. 2. GM power to weight limits. The General Motor Company (Owner of Chevrolet) used to limit vehicles produced under their companies to 1hp per 10 pounds this is most obvious with the Pontiac GTO and the Trans Am the GTO was rated at 350hp for the 400 while the trans am was rated at 335hp despite them having the same engine this was because the pontiac GTO weighed 3500 pounds while the trans am weighed right around 3350 pounds.

Real easy to see here.... The 440 hydraulic lifter mopar better get it done out of the hole and hold on for dear life on the top end or else that solid lifter rat will make you pay every time on the top end......been drag racing for a long time. Baby rat sacrifices low end for awesome top end charge as trap speed indicates. Bigger is not always better.

@@CarsAndZebras Im gonna show my bias bro, no maybe about it, the stage1 455 is the perfect hot street motor, how do I know this you ask my bro? Well I live close to Flint, Michigan my dad worked there for 48 years and I got to hang out in the dyno cells with the badass buick engineers and dyno operators when I was a kid. I used to sit on the dyno operators lap and they would let me make pulls with a screaming 455 in the cell. They didnt just test their own stuff... At any given time you might see a 440 mopar in there, or say a 460 ford for example. Buick wanted to know how to make their product better than the rest. At the time most attention was being paid to the turbo V6 program. Whos afraid of the big bad hemi? Not a stage 1 guy. Buick engineers got it done with a BS cast iron intake and a single rochester 4V It wasnt till you went to stage2 that you got a hotter cam, an edelbrock intake, and an 850 holly carb, and hooker headers!!!! All could be installed by a hot rod buick dealership, or yourself wich voided your warranty and had buick part numbers. Don't get me started on stage3!!! Anyway my bro love the content, and all that I have told is straight up trueI was there!

The rear gearing and the slight power to weight ratio that favours the Chevelle is the difference between these two cars. The 440 needs better rear gearing ro take advantage of its deep breathing ... the Chevelle is a better package

I think the 440 here is geared just right given the tire limitations. He has the torque off the launch but doesn't overpower the tires and with the 3.54 he still has a good top end charge. The Chevelle had a problem shifting at the top end it seems.

@@hilleryclifford2367 Couldn't disagree with you more. A fast revving small block in a light car with a low gear is the way to go on the street. These big blocks in heavy cars need the 1/4 mile top end charge to win. In a stoplight to stoplight race i.e. 1/8 mile my 340 swinger sent many of these land barges home. My swinger weighed 3200 pounds and your Buick 3900 pounds. By the time your big incher comes to life, I am parked waiting for you.

@@GH-el9ch Not to mention Chevy's over the counter high performance parts program, every trick part they made was available to the general public by doing so they kept the sportsman racers both stiaght line and circle track happy for many years. By the early 60's Chevy had built it's solid performance reputation with the Tri-five's, 348 and 409 W engines and of course the Corvette. Chrysler started playing catch up with it's cross-ram 426 wedge engine but really went off the rails at the first sight of the Gen2 BB Chevy resulting in their out of desperation reinterdiction of the Hemi an engine that had already been discontinued due to excessive production costs just a few years earlier. By bringing what was basically a machine-gun to a knife fight, Chrysler did build somewhat of a false performance image. False because the Hemi's production numbers were so limited it was almost non existent away from the racetrack. However, the SB 340 and BB wedge cars were produced in significant numbers and are responsible for Chrysler's true performance image.
