@@justpray365 Corvettes were 500 in the center and 350 for the outers, which equal 1200 cfm. Mopar used 350 in the center and 500's for the outers, which equal 1350 like he said in the video. Just a note: 2 barrel carbs are rated differently than 4 barrel. Divide 2v barrels by 1.414. 1350/1.414 = 955 cfm. 1200/1.414 = 849

The 1969 Dart's 340 made 320-330 HP according to the NHRA. But my favorite Mopar 340 has to be the 6-BBL/Six Pack from the AARs and T/As. Those made 350-360 HP as well I believe.
holy hell, both of these cars are insane!! nobody really seems to understand how quick a 12 second quarter mile is these days, what with all the sub 10 second cars they're running, but I really think it's amazing that they're able to run that fast considering their age. props to the owners for having them running so well, I love seeing these races!

@@chadhaire1711 , this class is "fast " factory appearing stock tire. They run the biggest factory option cam. Do a substantial amount of cylinder head work , distributor curving, carb work and chassis tuning. They even hog out the cast iron exhaust manifolds. And for better traction wear down the tread on the bias tire. But, it goes to show how doing that extra work on factory components can really increase the engine output and how the car can launch on a polyglas bias tire.

That's a super insect A12!💪
One of the best matchups on this channel. I think I splooged at least twice per race. The sounds of those cars, you just can't beat it.
Man I love that A12 super bee, definitely one of my top mopar picks. That was some really close racing there to be honest, hats off to both drivers on that one.
WOW, the symphony of big blocks.... intoxicating 🤘
This was about the most even match I've seen in a while. Love both and thumb up for posting them.
Fantastic match up C&Z, I'm a diehard Mopar guy with a sweet spot for those A12 440 Sixpack/barrel Superbees and Roadrunners, but damn! do I always weaken in the knees when I hear a the sweet sound of a SS396 especially if its in a Camaro! Both of those cars are no slouch when it comes to speed! And the Red A12 Superbee brings back a lot of good memories for me, because my dad use to drive a '69 Dodge Coronet 500 (originally a 318, swapped for a 383) it wasn't the "fastest" but it was cirtainly quick! It also was very close to that shade of red. Again, thanks for the close race and post, I love seeing these classic cars doing what they were built to do... Go fast, and haul a$$!
Both cars won in the right lane, must of been a slight advantage.

Goodday C & Z, What an absolute treat for Sunday morning whilst having my breakfast & washing it down with good old Greek coffee. That has to be the best racing so far this year. Went down to the wire, all 3 races were super close from 2 of the best muscle cars back in the day. Thank you for highlighting how back in 1965 the L78 in the Impala & Corvette were rated at 425 hp. I have at least 120 muscle car books & not one of them goes into detail the difference between the 425 hp L78 & the 1966 375 hp L78. If you can shine some light on it, or anyone it would be greatly appreciated. A quick reference to Ronnie Sox & what quarter mile he ran in a bone stock Plymouth Roadrunner 6BBL manual back in the day. It was a feature in a magazine & I believe he managed to get high 12's in it. Hope you are well. Freezing cold winter in Melbourne. Summer time in your neck of the woods. @@chadhaire1711 a lot of these muscle cars from that era suffered from t ET robbing facts . One was the stock exhaust didn’t flow enough air to satisfy a lawn tractor and two they suffered from a major lack of traction in first and second gear. A set of headers and 9” slicks will put both of the se car in NHRA stock class and would be solidly in the ten second 1/4 mile times.

Great race. I really thought the SB was going to take it
I've been to about 6 of those PSMCDR at Mid-Michigan. In all of my 53yrs of life its been the most fun car event (as a spectator) I've ever been to. It's so much fun to go around and look at these museum quality cars then watch them run. Usually the air is cool, the track is ultra sticky and the cars look stock but... run a bit quicker than they would have back in the day. 😉
As far as the difference in horsepower ratings of that L78 if I remember right it was for insurance purposes. The motor was the same but when they factory tested it they rated the later year using a lower RPM limit.
Some serious racin' here, folks. That Camaro is super strong.
Another awesome race! Can't get much closer than this...I love both these cars. Two of the quickest from the muscle car era. Would like to see a 440+6 Cuda or Challenger run against this Camaro..I think it would be an interesting matchup. Thanks for another great video, C&Z!

That A12 could transfer some weight and actually better than a Cuda due to wheelbase. But it did give 300 lbs away to the Camaro. A Cuda weighed the same as the A12, 35xx, showing that the A12 were stripped down pretty good. They were bare bones and lots of induction on lots of cubic inches. They were faster than a Hemi Super Bee of the same year.

All the babies out there that whine and moan about these cars being "modified". So what. Most of these modifications can be done on your driveway or in your garage and that's part of what made them so special in the first place. You have to be a wizard today with an arsenal of tech equipment to even attempt to work on the newer cars. The factory knew that it couldn't pump out more HP for many reasons so they let the public do what they wanted with off the shelf factory upgrades available at those dealers. Keep in mind these are naturally aspirated engines and in my opinion, are the best. So keep your turbo while you're at it. Long live the muscle car, the 1st generation of muscle car.

pretty even cars, Lighter weight Camaro has slight advantage. Motors put out about the same horsepower. Advantage Mopar on torque though.
Today $28,154, can’t buy you a well equipped Toyota Corolla, or Honda Civic.. That same modernized Camaro with updated horsepower/performance is well over $50,000💰💰💰💰 The buying power for the middle class is gone😩🥺..Automotive greed along with real estate greed have sunk our buying power! Thanks for a great video and a dream😴
Very nice
Great video, of a great match up. Honest, and well informed descriptions of the competitors. The L78 396 was rated at 375 gross horsepower. Actual output was right at 425. The 440 Six Pack was rated at 390, and made about 400 gross horsepower. The A12 Mopar had the advantage in torque. The Camaro had the horsepower, and weight advantage. Both cars ran like they should, and ET right where U expected them. The MPH tell the story. The Camaro is simply making more power. Like I said, a great match up. Two talented drivers/ tuners.

Yeah baby!!! Some of the pinnacle n muscle cars. This race back n 69/70 woulda drew 100-150 guys standing on knolls to watch. Heck, even 2 6cylinders with a 3 speed on column woulda been fun....getty up go.
Bellisimo camaro !
The 440 6 pack was a monster but this 396 was under rated and was a big block that was more eager to rev than bigger cubic inch chevy engines like 427 or 454
That 300 lb. weight deficit is tough to overcome.
The power to weight ratio on both is almost identical. Rear end gearing is the same. It came down to reaction time. The Camaro might have a slight aerodynamic advantage. If the Mopar could shed some weight it would have won.

Camaro has the weight advantage but it just comes down to the driver's reaction time who ever gets the light first wins
I'd run both with my 2008 Durango 5.7. I bottom the speedometer at 3000rpm.. Too scared to go 5k.
So reaction times taken out of the equation the Camaro went 3 for 3

Very close races! In the quarter mile I feel the 396 powered Camaro is slightly faster because of it's take off but the 440 powered Super Bee definetly catches up and if it was longer than a quarter mile I believe the 440 Super Bee would spank the Camaro.

I disagree. Both had about 4.1 gears. So beyond a quarter mile it would be a matter of which engine could rev higher. The Chevy 396 has a shorter stroke and has the advantage in top end revs.
Chrysler put all their eggs in one basket, the king Kong Hemi, and it still dominates today. Even chevrolet and ford have slapped their name on all the top fuel and funny cars.
Wich car is cooler? I would own either. Gotta admit , it's all about preference though.
Both cars tweaked to perfection, looks like advantage Camaro in the power to weight category so the reaction time was critical for the mopar. Hard to consistently put out .03 reaction times. That 300 pounds difference was too much. Maybe if the driver was racehorse jockey size••• Didnt know that about the L78 being in the Corvette earlier and rated 425hp! Says a lot. I'm amazed that they can get that power to the ground with those skinny tires.
I have always loved Chrysler cars from the muscle car era, but the company failed to develop a well thought out, lightweight, "A" body car with a big-block engine. They shoehorned big blocks into Darts and Barracudas, but those cars were pigs to drive, and they were not exceptionally quick in stock form. The "end of the era," Cudas and Challengers were almost as heavy as Chrysler's mid-sized cars had been. It was a market that Chrysler missed. They probably didn't have the money to develop the platforms they needed to be competitive in the compact/big block class.
You all know,it seems like ive seen alot of l78 Camaro's with the fender stripes rather than the RS Z28 rally stripes on a 396 SS!! I know you can get them both types of stripes,or even no stripes numbers matching but most 396's in count do seem to have the side stripes on them!! But,i do love these RS Z28 top rally stripes alot more on the 60's Camaro's!! I like the L48 350 Camaro SS,but people, that's just me!! 396 is too strong in a Camaro,i think the Camaro will probably win becayse of the 4:10 gear!!...🇺🇲🇺🇲
