1969 1/2 Plymouth Road Runner 440 A12 Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #152
The 1969 1/2 Plymouth Road Runner A12 is a hopped-up version of the popular Road Runner but features a 440 cube V8 wearing 3 2-barrel carbs and boasting an advertised 390 HP. These cars have a cool light weight lift-off hood, no hubcaps, and a bad attitude. From the Brothers Collection.

I once owned this car. 69 1/2 Red with a black fiberglass hood. The 440 six pac was an awesome engine. I replaced two clutches while I owned it. I'm still kicking myself for selling it back in 81.

Green is my all time favorite color in all Musclecars! And also, as a GM guy...I will say this...This car featured should be in the encyclopedia when looking up the word "Musclecar". This car is cool to even the most diehard GM guys!

I'm a Mopar guy but I wouldn't kick any of the high performance GM or Ford cars from those days out of my garage either. I especially liked Pontiac's when it came to GM. Its a shame how Pontiac stopped building their own V8's after the 81 model year although really the last good Pontiac V8 was the W72 400. The 1980-81 301 Turbo's were junk. They stopped building the W72 after the 78 model year but luckily had a bunch leftover to put in the 79 10th anniversary Trans Am's

I'm a Ford guy but even I know that when it came to muscle cars, Mopar is King!!! The 69 A12 Roadrunner and Super Bee is probably my favorite of all muscle cars. My favorite 426 hemi cars are the early sleeper 66-67 Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite and Dodge Coronet. Just that little "426 Hemi" fender badge to let you know this is definitely not grandma's car LoL

What a sweet ride, Kevin. In late '69 I actually had the money from working multiple jobs and went looking for one of these.....needless to say, they were all sold out. By spring of '70 my savings had dwindled and I was no longer able to look for an A12 option and didn't know if they would carry them into the new year. Ended up buying a base 383 Roadrunner with a few fancies. I loved the 383 but almost got a tear in my eye seeing this video. Ah....what could have been. Great show. Keep the Faith, Tom

'69 1/2 440 6bbls/Six Packs came with forged pistons. Ergo, they'll smoke when first started and running. Once the pistons expand some then the rings seat better and the engine stops smoking. Same deal w/ 426 Hemi's. Because forged pistons are denser than cast pistons, they expand more ~ so initial start up tolerances have to be 'looser'. I've dealt with the issue in any of the old school engines running forged pistons, especially back in the day...

I build a 460 Ford with 10.5:1 forged pistons and spent a lot of time making the clearances correct. I did detect a slight piston "slap" on very cold start-ups but it went away almost immediately with any warmth at all. With the high bump cam I had in it, it was hard to separate the sounds. I had a high pressure Melling pump and I may have been hearing lifters but sort of doubt it. Concerning the engine smoking.....I broke it in very hard because you just couldn't baby this engine and expect to seat the rings....no smoke but it always used a quart between fills. I blame the high pressure pump as I have had engine building experts relate that they will go with high volume but not high pressure pumps. Dunno....would like to hear thoughts on it.......

I always liked Plain Jane looking sleeper cars like the 66 Plymouth Belvedere/Dodge Coronet. Jay Leno has a sweet dark green 66 Hemi Coronet. The only options the car has are the 426 Hemi, the 727 Torqueflite Auto Trans, and bucket seats. But other than that it's as bare bones as they come. In 67 in order to get the Hemi you had to order either the new Belvedere GTX or Coronet R/T...which both came with the 440-4 barrel as the base engine with the 426 Hemi the only engine option. I think 66 was the last year that you could still get Mopar's highest performance engines in a base model car. In 67 I think the best you could get in a base Belvedere/Coronet was the 383. But In 67 I believe you could get any engine in a fastback Dodge Charger from the Slant Six right up to the 426 Hemi

People say well hellcats can do that and the red eye widebody 10.8s. Yep... They are wicked mopars but lets remember the 6bbls . Hemis etc are from 50 years ago!!!!! 50 years, all this technology and your just now getting getting cars to pull what those cars did a.half century ago. By the way. Not sure how many would do this now unless they take the stock 6bbl off and put an aftermarket on because of the value but 2 finely drilled holes would help the carbs open at an amazing clip! My grandfather Henry ( Hank) Schmidt came up with the idea. He was a big shot with industrial filter and pump in The Chicago area Had a ton of patents and........... MOPARS. HE NOT ONLY HELPED A CERTAIN CHICAGO AREA LEGEND WITH A DODGE DEALERSHIP MAKE THEIR CARS GO 1/2- 1 1/2 SEC QUICKER IN THE 1/4 OR MORE BUT HE ALSO HAD A TRANS SHOP. 727 TORQUFLITE WAS HIS SPECIALTY BUT ANY MOPAR TRANS HE COULD ABSOLUTELY AWAKEN WITH A CERTAIN SHIFT KIT HE MADE 100 TIMES BETTER. IF HE KNEW YOU HE WOULD HELP GM AND FORD GUYS AS WELL .HE LIVED JUST OUTSIDE OF HINSDALE IN A HOME HE BUILT ALL HIMSELF FROM CONCRETE ON UP. WE DID NOT GET ALONG GREAT BUT THE MAN WAS A GENIUS IN EVERYTHING HE DID. HE ALSO MADE ME WATCH HIM WORK ON MOPARS EVERY FRI AFTERNOON, SAT AND SUN FROM 8 YRS OLD UNTIL 15. BY 14... HE TORE DOWN A 440 MAGNUM AND TOLD ME TO PUT IT TOGETHER AND THEN WE WILL DYNO IT. I SHIT MY PANTS BUT AFTER A WEEK.... IT WAS TOGETHER, HOOKED TO A TORQUFLITE AND IN A MINT CONDITION 73 SE CHARGER. SLAP STICK. AFTER I WAS DONE AND AFTER THE ENGINE DYNOED AT 490 HP HE GAVE ME THE KEYS AND SAID WELCOME TO MOPAR WORLD. BESIDES BEING A JERK TO MY GRAM AND UNCLES AND MY MOM HE DID TEACH ME CARS AND GAVE ME A 500 HP SLEEPER 73 SE CHARGER. ONE THAT I BUILT MY FIRST ENGINE IN. SORRY IT IS SO LONG BUT FROM 8 TO NOW (53) I HAVE LOVED MOPARS AND WON STREET STOCK CLASS 8 TIMES AND SUPER STREET 9 IN MOPARS. HE GAVE ME ALL THAT KNOWLEDGE AND GAVE ME SOMETHING THAT I COULD LOOK UP TO MYSELF FOR AND BEST YET HE GAVE ME MOPAR!!! 17 CLASS CHAMPIONSHIPS OUT OF 26 YRS OF COMPETITIVE DRIVING.6 3RD PLACE, 2 4TH PLACE AND ONE 2ND PLACE. THANKS GRAMPS...... THANKS MA MOPAR. THANKS INDUSTRIAL FILTER AND PUMP. THANKS CHICAGO AND A BIG THANKS TO CHARGERS, ROAD RUNNERS AND THE ONLY SMALL BLOCK IVE OWNED ( WICKED) 340 DUSTER. The cylinder head design mostly. The Hemi was originally designed for NASCAR so it's a high RPM screamer. The 440 would often get the jump on the Hemi off the line but the Hemi would pass it usually at higher speeds. That also depended on rear end ratio's too. The 440 was definitely a better everyday street engine than the Hemi. But the 1970-71 Hemi's were actually a bit milder than the 1966-69 version because Chrysler had to switch to a hydraulic camshaft in 1970 for emissions reasons. So the 1970-71 Hemi's did have somewhat better street manners than the earlier ones did but they were still pretty high strung

Good observation. Truth is that because some of the cars (Mopars) have removable trim tags, the tags are often stored in a safe or away from the car during transport to protect them. Of course, the VIN stays with the car, and is easily verifiable as a legit car. This one is the real deal, with the tag having been in the safe when we shot the car. However, un-scrupulous sellers have tried to dupe the Collection with cars having fake tags and altered VINS. It's a real problem that takes an expert eye to prevent.

Rarecat actually some owners remove the tags and store them because theft at car shows had actually become an issue. Don't know if that's the case here.

Just imagine this thing with a 6 cylinder. I wouldn't say it looks bad but very unique if it did have a 6 cylinder.
